day 210 | video
[ the art of disguise is not merely physical. it runs on many layers, and the ability to replicate and manipulate emotions is just as important as the way one looks. it all comes in handy, though, especially when you're a world-renowned criminal mastermind in a new place with new people and you need to get your bearings.

this is why the residents of marina will be finding themselves in the company of richard brook, the fretful out-of-work actor, rather than the criminal mastermind that is james moriarty. it's only practical, after all; it would be absolutely ridiculous for everyone to be aware of his capabilities right off the bat.

the rumpled-looking man showing on the video feed is rather obviously distressed. he seems more fearful than angry, however -- his voice wavers as he mutters to himself, very quietly.
]

...torture? Murder? Really, I can't --

[ he pauses, and takes a deep breath. ]

I thought we'd been through all this once already. I'm innocent. I didn't do any of those horrible things, not a single one -- all I did was look the part. I swear, I'm being honest, I'll tell you everything all over again if I need to.

[ that tremor isn't just in his voice, now. he's shaking. ]

You've got the wrong man. This is a mistake. Please, just let me go home.

Please, then.

Better. [ sneering, he lifts his shoulders in a very delicate shrug. better, indeed, but not perfect. jim should be marking the great generosity he's showing in not cutting the feed right now! luckily for him, piter is enjoying himself. ]

What, my dear fellow criminal, would you like me to expound upon?

[ he's still visibly tense, but seems grateful for the acquiescence. ]

Please don't call me that, okay? But -- just what this place is like, I guess. Obviously, it's a prison, but ... not the kind most people would expect.

[ that request nearly makes him laugh. "okay?" no. it is not okay, and he is not a child. how dare anyone speak to him that way? this fellow is playing the fool quite convincingly. ]

It resembles a small city, providing apartments, restaurants, recreational facilities, and the like for your delinquent self. [ his tone rather indicates that he does not partake of conventional recreational facilities. recreational drug use, perhaps, but not karaoke or whatever the normal people are up to. ]

Though the dome is overrun by machines, there is an unexpected degree of freedom to the place; it has strict rules, of course, but the punishments even for murder are humorously lax. [ the small smile on his face implies that he knows this firsthand. ]

[ both jim and rich take in this information -- the former dwells for a moment on the stirring curiosity this man is piquing. punishments for murder, hm? within time he'll get to know why exactly piter would know that. both are pleased in their own ways that the treatment of the inmates seems very casual, despite the initial commitment. ]

Not exactly much of a prison, then.

Not a conventional prison by any means— though what would one such as you know of prisons? [ it's a gentle barb, prodding sharply but not intending much else. if this fellow insists that he's done nothing, perhaps it's true. perhaps he's done nothing yet. in any case, he's certainly never been caught. that makes two of them. ]

Of course, we are presumably trapped here for the rest of our natural lives. That, at least, is in accordance with the general standard. [ which is a bit of a blessing for people like piter whose lives are lengthened because of this, but. he's still quite bored and dissatisfied with with prospect. ]

Everyone's got a general knowledge of them, regardless of ever having been in one. They're just one of those things.

[ two of them, indeed. the only time jim has ever been caught was orchestrated and intentional, and aside from this, he intends to have it stay the only time. ]

Accordance with the general standard? Does that mean there's, uhm, variation?

Variation? [ he smiles a gentle and radiant smile that is completely incongruous with what he's about to say. ] To start, the vast majority of prisons are not underwater, you precious dunce.

[ that change in rich's features, that building tension, amuses piter greatly. his own expression remains unchanged, even nonchalant. ] Ego? No, no. This is not egotism, but fact.

[ ... realtalk: it's at least 25% egotism, if not more. but still— he is, above all, a mentat. he transcends just "smart." ]

Pretty sure that just by phrasing it that way you're proving it's egotism.

[ he mimics that expression, mockingly. ] I do suppose that this word will mean nothing to you, but perhaps a definition will provide some clarity. I am a Mentat: a human trained and conditioned to replace your thinking machines. I must function supra-logically at all times— it is a necessity that my mind be superior. We cannot all be Mentats.

[ conveniently, he leaves out the part about his twisting. it's habit, though, more than it is entirely conscious deception— "twisted Mentat" is, in some circles, synonymous with "animal," and he has never been keen on seeming like less of a mentat. in any case, he merely smiles back at rich. he thinks that he has risen to the challenge well enough. ]

"Thinking machine"? If you're using a ridiculous phrase like that, I think I have rights to doubt your claims of intellectual superiority.

[ there's something about this guy that rubs rich the wrong way. consequently, that means he's rubbing jim just the right way and definitely piquing his interest. ]

[ absolutely not. snickering at piter's expense is not permitted. only piter may be mirthful at the expense of others! ]

Ah, maturity. [ that would be directed at rich's most distasteful actions. he gives him a rather petulant, challenging look. ] But I should think the word is quite apt— I hail from the year 10191. [ he might be hoping that this will freak rich out. he just kind of likes it when it freaks people out, okay. it's the whole "mirth at the expense of others" thing. ]

[ something about this instruction to "googol" makes him recall being asked by PM if he could receive "eee-mail." he does not like it. ] A googol is the digit one followed by one hundred zeroes.

I've heard of your Sye Fye nonsense before, and I've no time for it. I am now merely trying to determine whether or not you're trying to insult me.

[ not a wound to pick at, jim. mentats don't take kindly to criticism. his eyes narrow before he gives them a roll. ]

Oh, I've concluded long ago that you are quite eager to irritate me. It's merely a matter now of gauging your insolence, which I have indeed done. [ the implication being that rich is almost as insolent as they come. ]

Now, need I remind you that mere minutes ago you were shaking like a frightened child? You, my dear man, are in no place to harass me. [ there's a bit of a pause before "me" as he stifles the urge to segue into the third person, and then he gives rich a challenging look, as if daring him to misbehave further. ]

[ these "mentats" are apparently fun to poke at. or at least this one in particular is. ]

Being frightened after waking up in an unfamiliar place -- one that's underwater, no less - is a reasonable cause for panic, I'd say. [ an indifferent shrug. ] If you're going to fault me for a normal reaction, let me remind you that you're the one that chose to actually engage in conversation.

[ and here is a smile that does not seem to mesh with rich himself, the way he presents. something about it is just a smidgeon Off. ]
