Day 209 ✝ Action
✝ Action with Spencer Reid
Derek smiled brightly when he saw Reid walk into the athletic complex almost right on time to when they’d agreed to meet. He’d almost expected him to find an excuse not to show since this wasn’t really Reid’s thing, so he was really more than happy that he did. He’d wanted some time with his friend to see how he was really doing and this was as good excuse as any without being overly obvious that he was checking up on him. Reid could really just be happy that Derek wasn’t busting down his door again and pushing his way in. Improvement? Yes. Never let it be said that Derek couldn’t grow and change… kind of.

He stood up from the chair he’d been sitting in and picked up his bag. He’d already claimed a room to work in, like he usually did. One hand clapped down on Reid’s shoulder and squeezed. “Hey pretty boy. Almost thought you might not show.”

✝ Action with Rogue
For weeks now Derek and Rogue had been working privately with each other. It was actually working with her that had made him think about giving more lessons in self-defense… maybe even starting a class. But it was still just an idea he was toying with more than one he was actually putting into motion. Not that he would turn down anyone who wanted to learn or spar. He just wasn’t advertising it yet.

He was in his normal room that he occupied with a nice mat on a part of the floor. When Rogue came in, he smiled in her direction. “Hey, pretty girl. Doin’ alright? You get caught up in that mess yesterday?”

✝ Open Action for anyone and everyone
For the better part of the morning Derek will be at the Athletic Complex in Sector one. He’ll probably break for lunch and then head into the Defense Force Headquarters in Sector Two for a bit to do some work. Anyone is free to run into him in either place or in the in-between.

Rose had yet to visit the complex in sector one and doing exercise seemed to be a good way to work out her frustrations. She'd never been to a gym in her life but she had a vague idea on how to work the machines.

Mostly.

She was fiddling with the settings on the treadmill, her face scrunched up in concentration. This might take Rose a little while.

The Athletic Complex was perfect for working out frustrations. That was why Derek frequented the building so often and he knew full well that he wasn't the only one who used it for those reasons. While some people accepted the prison fairly well, for others it came with a lot of frustration in a lot of different ways. Not to mention the way some people clashed with each other in here.

It was easy to read the frustration on this girl's face as she studied the buttons on the treadmill. He could tell there was just a hint of confusion there too, normal for someone working a new machine. He walked over to her in between work outs. "Might wanna stand on the side rails, pretty girl. Before you push too many buttons and the track starts movin' under you."

When you had been on the run for over five hundred years and had to keep out of the sunlight to avoid being burned, stopping by the gym was low on her priority list. Besides, she could argue that all the running she did was more than enough to make up for it. Rose's frustration came from her recent punishment. She honestly didn't think that sleeping with someone was such a big crime. But it wasn't up to her of course. She needed to work on getting rehabilitation points.

She turned around at the sound of a voice, looking at the new comer: good-looking, obviously someone who worked out regularly and possibly a charmer. Judging by the 'pretty girl' comment.

"I think I almost have it. If it starts moving, I'll step off the machine." She sighed as she pressed a few more buttons. "Okay, I don't think I have it."

Stubborn, Derek knew a few people like that. But he waited patiently as she fiddled with the buttons a bit more, even setting his bag down so that he'd be ready to catch her if the track caught her off guard enough to make her fall. He'd seen that happen a few times before at various gyms.

He offers her a small grin and steps up close to the side of the treadmill. His fingertips trace over the various parts of the console without actually pushing any buttons as he goes. "Alright so here you set your miles per hour. Some people like to start at a walk and get a feel for the treadmill for say five minutes or so before you get into a run... if a run is your goal. And here you set your incline. But if this is your first time on a treadmill, I'd wait for that just to get a feel of it too. But once those are set, you press this button and it'll start going. And if you decide you need to go faster or slower once you get going, these are the buttons you push."

He rests an elbow on the handle. "And after you get done, give yourself a second of standing still cause... well I haven't worked treadmill in awhile but I know the first few steps after you get off always feel a little off kilter when the world around you starts moving while you walk again." One shoulder lifts in a shrug. "Or that might just be me."

Rose decides to just let him show her how to work the machine, letting go of her stubbornness for the time being. She watches him as he gestures to the different buttons, silently taking in everything and making no move to interrupt him; if she was going to use the machine she might as well learn how to do it.

She nods as he talks, a way to let him know that she was listening and paying attention to what he was telling her. "Well, thanks for showing me how to use this thing and for the tip. I really don't want to fall over on account of being unsteady." Rose laughs a little, relaxing some. Her stubbornness seemed to have disappeared completely now.

"I'm Rose by the way." A smile. "Might I know the name of my rescuer?" She's teasing but it was fun.

When she seems to lighten up a little bit he takes a cue from her and relaxes a little more as well. Although his normal demeanor is relaxed for the most part unless he's on the job. Not that his guard isn't always up on the inside, he just knows how to put on a good show.

"Rose. Pretty name." He smiles right back at her. "Derek. Derek Morgan. It's nice to meet you. I'm in this building enough to ask if you're alright since I've never seen you in here before. Or maybe we've just missed each other."

"Nice to meet you too, Derek," Rose replies, still smiling. She didn't seem to mind that he thought her name was pretty. "Probably because it's my first time here. I just felt like checking it out, see it for myself, you know?"

Apart from that, doing exercise seemed to stave off the blood cravings for Rose. Not that she had any intentions of feeding from a human, the blood bags were enough but in between those times, she had to find something to occupy herself with.

"Oh yeah. It's good to see what the place offers. When I'm not working with someone, I usually work with weights and the punching bags. They've got some nice heavy bags and speed bags... good for workin' out some frustration." If he sounds like he knows this from experience, it's because he does. Derek gets frustrated a lot in this place.

He pats a hand over the armrest. "But I guess running's your thing?"

Little did he know about how much running was her thing. It was how Rose survived for as long as she did-until her past caught up with her.

"Yeah, running is my thing." Rose glances around. "But I think I'd like to try the other machines before I leave here, see if there's anything else that could be my thing."

She smiles. "Is there any machine or workout that you recommend I try, Derek?"

"There's kick boxing that can be done with the larger punching bags. Or weight lifting, which I could spot you on. I usually stick to the punching bags and the weights. But I've also been teaching a handful of people basic self defense. I teach that back home along with a judo class." Because Derek doesn't do free time very well. Instead, he likes to stay constantly busy.

He tilts his head, an amused and genuine grin on his lips. "Any of that sound interesting to you?"

"I like the sound of the punching bags and lifting weights." The weights would be a breeze for Rose because of her strength from being a vampire; she could play human around him though because she wasn't sure how he'd take it if he knew the truth. She just wanted to be careful for her sake as well as his.

Rose steps off the treadmill, offering him a smile. "If you're not too busy now, we could maybe start?"

"I got nowhere to be. And I really wouldn't mind hittin' things for awhile longer. It's good stress relief." He really has no set schedule even if he eventually has plans to get over to the Defense Force Headquarters. Honestly, he'd never say no to doing more hands on work than what the Defense Force can offer here right now. He's a very active person in general.

He waits for her to step off of the treadmill and then starts walking in the direction of the punching bags. "So where you from, Rose?"

"Brilliant." She beams at him, clearly pleased with that. Rose could use a little stress relief and it seemed the perfect way to start. Maybe she would pick up a few new skills in the process.

Rose falls into step beside Derek, glancing over at him when he asks her the question. "England. Just south of London, actually. Although, I have travelled around quite a bit so I've seen the world." At night anyway. "Where are you from, Derek?"

“Should’ve figured that out from the accent.” And he probably could have if he had tried. But really, that took effort that he wasn’t usually in the mindset to put forth when he was at the gym. There were other things on his mind, which was one of the main points of being at the gym. It wasn’t all about bulking up, even if that was a part of it.

“Must be nice to travel that much though. Get to see a lotta things some people only get to see in pictures. Back home I live in the D.C. area, work out of Quantico, Virginia. But I was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois.” He glanced sideways to her. “You ever been to any of those places?”

"It is nice, yeah." When she wasn't in fear for her life. "I've only been to Virginia but it was a very brief visit, nothing substantial really. But I liked it, seemed like a nice place." Truthfully, it was a substantial visit and it changed Rose's life. Well, it killed her. But she wasn't telling him that.

Rose smiled, hoping to divert the conversation back to Derek. "If you ever leave here and go home, you should maybe try to see England. Only a suggestion, nothing more."

"Yeah, Virginia's not half bad. And one of these days I'll get around to travelling the globe." In the next year from his canon point, as a matter of fact. "One of those things that's on the to-do list when work slows down a bit." Which is laughable, work slowing down.

At the punching bags, he drops his bag down to the ground a few feet away. He walks around to the opposite side of the punching bag and peeks around it at her. "Let's see what you got."

Rose had to remember that he was giving her a few tips and training her; rather than showing him that she had a greater strength than average, she decided to continue acting as if she was normal. "Alright, then. I'm looking forward to this."

She throws him a smile before preparing herself, getting into the correct stance. It was important that she got the basics right first. Rose begins with her right hand, aiming a jab at the bag, then follows it up with her left before she sets herself at a rhythm, keeping her eyes on the bag.

It was obvious that she had had some experience with this with the way she moved, with the control, the steady rhythm she found after the first few punches. He'd been teaching long enough to tell whether someone needed training or not after watching for awhile. He'd trained everyone from a beginner to advanced martial arts. And Rose wasn't a beginner.

After a few seconds of watching her form once she fell into a rhythm, he grinned and nodded. "Not bad at all, Rose. You've got a tell though. Jerking your hand back to much before leaning into the punch can give your opponent a heads up that it's coming. Just go for it." He still clutched the other side of the bag, feeling the jolt from each of her punches. "You've got the strength."

Definitely not a beginner as far as she was concerned but Rose didn't always rely on her strength against her enemies. She was smart, knew how to lay low and thanks to her vampiric speed, she could evade them quite quickly. But she was playing human now and that was what Rose was going to do so she wouldn't arouse his suspicion.

"Got it. Thanks for the tip, Derek." She gave him another smile before addressing the issue and fixed it, continuing to punch the bag and keeping his tip in mind. Rose wouldn't get tired from this but she would stop after a few more minutes to take a rest.
