DAY 207 (nightish) → open video + private messages.
[ welcome to elena's room. it's filled with things. and boxes. some things are in some boxes. she's thought twice about making this video, and then thought twice about making it public (klaus) but on her second thought, she decided to stop hiding in the network.

for the most part.

she's sitting cross-legged on her bed, mister teddy junior in her lap. ] It's kind of amazing how much stuff can accumulate here after a month. [ wait. ] More than. [ she puts him in the box. ] Books, clothes... [ her eyes look out to the space of her thoughts for a only a split second ] people, memories.

I know a lot of us are all working to find a way home. [ her included. maybe. ] I guess I was wondering why any of you would want to stay.

I think we should keep our conversations private for now. Even if it's just something silly. It's not a good idea for you to have Klaus' attention. Even if Rebekah's already told him... [ she swallows. it may be a desperate, scared attempt to protect her... but elena's willing to be that, do that. being a witch might attract klaus' attention too, without her help, but... the thing that gives her more pause at the moment is jeremy, jenna - how she kept things from them to keep them safe, and it hurt them in the end. (she lost jenna entirely.) so. ] Is that okay?

[ yeah that's all she's got. it's not about the kiss, or the embracing, but it's subtext. he was there for her when she needed somebody, and he listened. wanted to. and it's more than that - the understanding, and the things they confessed...

[ He thought that would have been the end of their little chit chat; what with his inability to hold a conversation with her about everything and nothing at all like they used to, but when she mentions Alaric, he lets out a hint of a smile. He thinks he wants to tell her that he's sorry for the fight they had; for the things he said, but he doesn't. He can't. What's the point? He wants to be selfish; asks if she still trusts him; if they can still be friends despite it all, but decides that he'll take what he can get. ]

I doubt you'd need to bribe the guy, Elena. Besides, he's pushing into his late thirties, early forties. Might want to avoid turning him into Mister Pudgy.

[ Damon looks at the box on her bed, and then back to her. He tilts his head to the side and narrows his eyes slightly. She looks like she hasn't had a good night's rest in days; which doesn't surprise him. It's just been one thing after the other lately. ] A lot more to go?

[ she wants to be selfish. trusting him, being his friend; it doesn't occur to her those things are different. (even if friends has been more since a long time ago.) even if they're not talking. she wants those conversations about everything and nothing at all. she wants to talk to him; she wants him; she'll take what's already been afforded to her and hold on.

that's why it's so simple and bittersweet to smile, close her eyes, and let out a breath of amusement. ] You started it with alcohol.

[ but she sobers at his scrutiny, the way he looks from the box and back to her. (she hasn't slept well. this isn't a surprise. she's noted he didn't look like he had either, the other day.) she answers his question. ] I shouldn't want to stay, Damon. I think if Jeremy showed up -

I think I want him to.

[ Life back in Mystic Falls.... not exactly a barrel of fun right now. Especially when compared to her life in Marina, where she has her aunt back, where Alaric's still alive and where other terrible things have yet to happen to her, and to the people she cares about . He understands why she would want to stay. Why she would want Jeremy here. He gets it. But more than that -- ]

It's not like you've an option to stay or go, Elena. It's not like there's a way to escape this place. We're one point zero three miles beneath the surface of Saylar Ocean. Judging by the fact there are aliens from other planets here living amongst us, we're definitely not on Earth. [ He's not saying that it's okay to stay here because Jenna's alive, because Alaric is, because she is. He's just letting her know that she doesn't have to spend the rest of her time here feeling guilty for not trying to escape, or for even wanting to stay because-- ]

We're dealing with something far more advanced than anything we can imagine.

You need to accept the fact that there is no way home, Elena.

You should want Jeremy here.

[ she wants to believe what he's saying, and maybe that's why she can't, not entirely. (or maybe it's the other way around: maybe she does believe it, and that's why she can't want it, not entirely.) there may not be an option to leave, there may not be a way; she's never kidded herself of that.

but she has to have hope. of home, of jeremy... for jeremy. of having a life that apparently doesn't get better, easier. what she believes or not... what she wants or not, it's about what would be right for her brother, and they can't trust this place just like they can't trust home. (but could they be happier here?)

she says nothing, merely lets the sadness and truth and emotion fill her. she moves her head to the side and looks down. ] I miss him. I miss him, and... [ tears burn her eyes ] I'm so happy. [ the happiness, this place... ] It's dangerous, and she could be gone any second... [ because of the wardens, because of klaus. elena trails off, shakes her head. ] But she's alive, Damon. Jenna's here.

[ They both know it's possible for anyone to disappear via the stabilizer at any point in time, but's it's not something to focus on. He's happy for her; glad she has her aunt back. It's a good thing. ]

Mm. Does this mean you're back to having a curfew now? [ Not that he was aware she had one before, what with the many times she stayed over at the boarding house playing late night boardgames with Stefan. What else would explain all the loud noises he'd heard and everything ever? La la la la.

More seriously now. ]

Did you get her on the vervain yet?

[ it's that lack of control that has elena wanting to find a way home. maybe they couldn't control things there either, but at least no higher ai power was controlling them. deciding who stays and goes, who's right and wrong.

her tears linger at his comment; her lips purse. she doesn't have it in her to be amused. but: ] We haven't left the apartment. She's barely used to blood, I... [ honestly, she hadn't thought of it. wanted to spare jenna the discomfort.

it's been a long few days.

her brows furrow; she looks to the side. damon's right. she needs to be on vervain. ]

You should get her on it before she leaves the apartment. [ The running into Klaus thing doesn't need to be said. It's most likely inevitable at some point or other, but they'll just have to deal with that if and when it happens. ] Start with small amounts. A drop of vervain in her coffee. Some in her food. She might feel a little woozy at first, but she'll get used to it. [ He'll pass Ric a few bottles tomorrow and work at making a new batch later tonight. ]

[ she hears what he's saying. she understands it entirely. but mostly she's thinking about how jenna's unprotected, and what she was thinking amidst seeing bonnie and finding a new place... to not consider this more seriously. because she needs it. jenna needs it. elena's sure she would have given her some tomorrow morning, but...

it's possible she's still working through the reality of all this.

she looks at him when he says her name; he has her attention when he says it'll be okay. she nods, because that's what she does: say it's going to be okay. believe that it will.

she closes her parted lips.

then. ] It's not that easy. [ her gazes lifts to his. ] She's dead, Damon. She died. [ it's not about being a vampire, not entirely. it's about not having a future. ]

You helped her through her transition. She's alive. Here. [ He'd like to say how that's all that matters, but who knows what'll happen tomorrow or the day after that. But that's life, isn't it? Unpredictable. All kinds of sucky.

And it really isn't that easy. ]

We'll protect her. We'll keep her safe.

We can't keep her safe from anything. [ they hadn't. didn't. couldn't. the words aren't said without emotion, but they're also said with a detached kind of surety.

they can't protect her from klaus, from the wardens, from herself. ] There is no safe. [ she knows that. accepts that. she shakes her head at the very idea of it. he's right; there's no telling what will happen tomorrow or the next day. ]

[ she's not sure if she even believes that. right now is relative; she's in her apartment safe and sound. jenna's here with her and no one can touch them. wants to touch them. maybe she can't think like that, but right now she's wondering if thinking like that is the only way to survive.

there's recognition in her gaze at the scenery around him, the fact that he showed her isn't lost on her. he's here. ] You could help me. [ her expression lightens only enough to account for snark. ] For everything else but my underwear.

[ she's sure he would. she sighs at the sound of his voice - much closer - and gets up in no rush. pulls her headset out of her ear and leaves it on her bed on the way. she looks at him once, through the thin curtains before she works at opening the doors, gives them a nudge open.

(the thing is, she's not unsure. she just wants, and fine, maybe she is a little something she can't put her finger on. (not awkward, not nervous, not giddy, not anything most people in love might be, at least not at any one time.) not about him, or around him, but because of him. she feels herself relax with him, and that's the most something of all.) ] Come in.

[ Funny how two little words like 'come in' can mean so much to a vampire. But pfft, get over it. Elena Gilbert's moving out of the apartment the very next day so this means nothing.

He slides the door all the way open, moves the curtain off to the side and steps inside. The very first thing he does it to get Mister Teddy Junior out of the box, and the second is all kinds of predictable too. He hops onto Elena's bed and gets comfy. ]

A little cramped. [ He looks around. ] Tell me you'll be getting a bigger room.

[ it doesn't mean what it could have meant. elena's blank-faced watching him walk in, barely betraying any emotion she may or may not have, seeing him, seeing him with the backdrop of her things, on her bed.

he does make it easy though, being predictable. (this isn't relaxing at all. for reasons. or just too familiar.) ] It doesn't need it to fit my ego, unlike some people I know.

[ so giving him a look for purposely getting jenna's name wrong. elena grabs a small pile of bottoms on her dresser and moves to the box at the foot of her bed, tucks them inside. ] She's refreshening up. I'm sure when she hears you she'll coming rushing in. [ that's not even snarky. it's true. ]

Fine. [ He's standing next to her now and starts looking at what she's put in one of the boxes. Prepare for all the changes ever. Nothing here is done in the right way according to Damon Salvatore. And there is a rigt way for folding clothes into a box; even if it's a temporary stay, but especially if it's going into a brand new drawer tomorrow. ] Nngh. [ He's thinking about how these are going to get so wrinkled by morning. Damon takes a pile out and places it off to the side before staring at what else is placed in with the clothes. ]

Make up your mind, Elena. Books stay with the books. Undies stay with the delicates...

Some things don't belong here.[ He holds up a pair of jeans and a pair of sunnies. ]

[ aaaaand with that she reaches forward to grab the jeans and sunglasses. ] I have stuff, and not a lot of boxes to put them in. [ that's why she's stepping forward into him and rolling the jeans up to place back in the box. she gives him a look picking the dislodged pile up and putting it back. the sunglasses are placed at the top.

she's looking away, flipping the arms of a shirt back into the box's confines. it's quiet, and it bothers. (the thoughts that could be heard now have a stage. elena usually equates that to damon's presence and fault.)

so. ] You saw Klaus the other day. [ she looks at him. ] Is that where you were?

[ He stops going through another one of her boxes and sorts of makes a face before going back to rearranging some of her things. ]

This is heavy. You should label it. That way you won't have to strain your back in the morning. [ He reaches for a sharpie: writes 'not for Elena's dainty fingers' on the box before he lifts it up and puts it off to the side. ]

Damon, I'm serious. [ she reaches, her hand resting on his arm and fingers curling gently around it; moves herself into his space before he can turn away from her.

she cares. something could, would, probably did go drastically wrong.

(maybe it's because he was gone the whole day, and now that could make sense.) ]
