Day 207 [Closed Action] Rose & Dimitri
[The sound of haunting laughter penetrated Rose’s mind, like a child in the distance giggling to another; faint, disjointed, like it was detached from the body of the person or thing that was making it. If it weren’t for the painful throbbing that accompanied it, Rose would have thought for sure that she was dreaming but when her eyes flew open, a jolt of terror shot through her.

The washed out body of a giant wasp like thing was coming towards her, making stars burst in her eyes, the pain intensifying as it drew closer. Rose for one long moment frozen where she lay as she stared at the thing that hovered above her, it'swings beating so fast they were all but a blur. White hot pain seared her brain, shadows moving in her periphery as Rose tried to make her limbs work, one hand shooting out as if to ward it off as she scrambled across the floor of the beach hut, stopping only when the back of her head slammed into the wall.]

“Go away!”

[Swatting at the creature ineffectually, beads of sweat forming on her brow as the pain threatened to slip her into unconsciousness. These were not the reaching hands of the dead, though even through the pain she recognized the same washed out appearance. This seemed different somehow, more menacing, wrong. This wasn't just something that wanted to hurt her, this was something that wanted her dead.

The giant wasp went in for the kill, Rose shielding herself with her arm, Her eyes wide as it seemed to try and latch onto it and yet was unable to grip flesh.]

“Get it off me! Get it off!

[To Rose Hathaway, this all looked very real but to anyone watching her right now? She was one straight-jacket short of a padded cell, swatting and screaming at something only she could see.]

[Dimitri was on the move the moment he'd heard noises coming from inside the hut where he'd left Rose sleeping in order to do another sweep of the surrounding area. It only took him a few seconds to make it back to her, since his usual speed had returned to him at some point during the morning, once the device hampering him had fallen off.

He knew what was happening before he'd even gotten to her. The same thing must have happened. And her mental walls...]

Rose!?

[He emerged through what qualified as the 'front door,' moving to her and taking her shoulders in his hands.]

Rose? Rose, look at me.

[He needed her to focus on something, anything, and for that he needed to get her attention.]

His voice was perhaps the only thing that could have reached her in that moment, Rose trying to focus on Dimitri as he gripped her shoulders, tight enough to get her attention but it was hard to really see him. The blood had drained from her face leaving her skin an unnaturally sick pallor for the Dhampir. His body went through the creature like it wasn't even there and her head - god - her head felt like somebody had taken to it with a sledgehammer... Repeatedly.

"Hrmmm..." She sounded pained, not lost or confused, swallowing the bile that burned the back of her throat as her vision blurred, Rose trying to make out the face of Dimitri as the wasp-like thing came at her again and again with its stinger, the brunette flinching each time.

Sweat now formed a river that trickled down her face, Rose trying to force herself to look at Dimitri, only at Dimitri and not that thing. She heard a voice, him or, maybe just her own, telling her what was happening but the walls were down and it was hard to pull them back up now that the dead - whatever the hell they were - had their opening.

"Hurts..." She got out through gritted teeth, one hand moving to grab whatever part of him she could, a leg perhaps, her nails digging into his body. "Can't - Unnngh. I can't - stop..." Shaking her head, holding her breath as she concentrated with every bit of energy she had on shutting them out.

"You can. Focus."

He has seen this before, when they didn't know what it was, back when he had made the mistake of not believing her. It had sounded ridiculous, after all. People didn't see the dead, they didn't walk around, and try to give their secret messages away.

Except they had, and she did. He knew that now, and when her powers had returned to her, she hadn't had her walls up.

"You need to send them away." He squeezes her hands, as if it would somehow let him lend her his strength. "You can do it."

Tears shone in her eyes, Rose feeling the dark, peaceful blanket of unconsciousness trying to wrap itself around her and it would have been so easy to give into that, if not for Dimitri. His voice, the hands that squeezed hers, the sure and steady belief that she could do this, that was what made the difference.

Rose forced her eyes to lock on his, squeezing his hands tight and concentrated with all she had, picturing the invisible wall that would send these things away, blocking out the sounds, the visions and just saw Dimitri, his dark eyes burning into hers, as if he were the one putting those walls up for her.

The moment it was over was obvious; Relief sagged her shoulders, the tension in her face disappearing as she pitched forward, just trying to breathe as the pounding in her head lifted and she was alone with Dimitri again, shuddering as she sighed.

“Son of bitch…” If ever you needed to be sure she was okay, that ought to confirm it. “What the hell was that…”

Dimitri held onto her as if she might drift away or disappear if he let her go, never once breaking the eye contract that she held intensely for the next long moments.

And then it was like it was over in an instant, the way she drooped forward, and his arms went around her to catch her without even thinking.

It had been a long time since the first time he'd seen this. He didn't know if it was better or worse knowing the cause; he could only be grateful that at least he could help, even a little bit.

"Our abilities came back," he said, smoothing her hair with his hand. "The object that was suppressing them fell off just a little while ago. You weren't ready for it." He wasn't blaming her, of course. She couldn't have realized.

“You don’t say…” Panting still, the pain having subsided but her skin felt clammy, her head recovering from being metaphorically split apart and at first she didn’t even notice what was happening with Dimitri.

It hit her though, as she rested her forehead on his shoulder, her vision righting itself. His scent wrapped around her, his touch warm and welcoming and though she tried to tell herself that this was neither the time nor place for her to indulge in feelings she needed to send away… This was Dimitri. How could she be with him like this and not feel like her heart was about to beat it’s way out of her chest.

“Lissa…” That thought snapping her out of her foolish moment, Rose straightening as she tried to reach out, to touch her mind through the bond but the hope that had made her inhale sharply soon faded, shoulders sagging as she lifted her eyes to meet his, their brown depths swirling with confusion, sadness and worry. “Still nothing…” Though she wouldn’t have needed to have said those words for him to know that. It was written all over her face.

Dimitri felt it too, a moment after he'd put his arms around her. He wanted to comfort her, help her, and yet he had the sudden urge to push her away, distance himself from her.

He didn't deserve to hold her. Not with his hands. He was still waiting for the look of revulsion on her face to show up when he touched her.

Then Lissa's name on Rose's lips pulled him away from those thoughts, and he seemed to hold his breath as he knew she searched for her, their link. And he also knew the moment that she came up empty.

"I'm sure she's fine," he said, his hands running over her shoulders as his eyes gazed into hers, trying to be comforting. "Powers or not, we're still cut off."

From the rest of the world. They might not even be in their world at all.

Rose wasn’t entirely sure she believed that – That Lissa was fine. Call it vanity on her part but she would never believe that anyone could protect her the way that she could or would…. Except for maybe the man sitting with her now. With both of them trapped here?

Rose sighed, rubbing her eyes as if to make sure the visions were gone, the beginning of a different kind of headache coming on from where she’d cracked her head against the wall of the little shack. The ocean sounded much louder than it had last night, just another indicator that whatever was keeping their Dhampir abilities suppressed.

And then, there was him. Again. Touching her, comforting her… not sending her away. She was still waiting for somebody to shake her awake and she’d find herself back in the cells of the Moroi court. If it weren’t for the fact that she could feel the warmth of his hands and the scent of his breath, she might have been inclined to pinch herself.

“I really don’t like this place.” Rose prone to stating the obvious rather than actually dealing with the sudden influx of feelings that were making her chest flutter. “Even the dead things are… just, wrong.” Meaning the ghosts, if she could even call them that, a shiver running down her spine at the memory of a giant wasp trying to gnaw on her arm.

She should probably stop, pull away, get up but right now? She wanted this moment to last, just a little longer.

"I know." It was all he could say in regards to that. He didn't like it either, beyond the fact that she was safe here. Lissa was safe at Court, and he could keep his promise to her by keeping Rose safe if they were here.

They'd still need to go back someday. But for now, at least Dimitri could keep her away from the dangers of being a vigilante.

He was still concerned for her current well-being, his eyes searching her body for any other trauma, bruises that she may have sustained while trying to fight off her would-be-attackers.

"What did you see?"

Rose blinked a few more times, as if that might somehow change the thing she had seen then shook her head, turning to watch Dimitri as he looked her over. That was worry in his eyes, real worry. Maybe she shouldn't have been so surprised by that after what had happened when she'd been arrested but it still tugged at her heart strings, making it skip a beat as his words forced her to shake these thoughts from her head.

“It... This is going to sound crazy.” Rose fully aware of how amusing that was. Ghosts and vampires and being in some underwater prison, that was within the realms of sanity. This, not so much.

“It was a wasp.” Brow furrowed. “Not like a normal wasp I mean, a giant killer wasp.” Like something you'd see in a bad horror movie. She'd hoped saying it out loud would make it sound less ridiculous but vocalising just made it more so. “I'm not making this up, I swear. My imagination's not that good.”

"Nothing you say can be crazier than what we've already experienced," he said, in what he hoped was a comforting manner. Coming here, dealing with time issues, her seeing ghosts in the first place, coming back from being a Strigoi. Crazy and impossible no longer existed.

"I know you're not making it up, Rose. No one can fake that kind of terror and pain." Especially not her, not around him. She didn't have a reason to do that kind of thing, and he would have noticed it immediately.

"They must have died here. It was just the one? Nothing else?"

You say that now she thought, though kept it to herself. His reaction was at least, some comfort she supposed and she was looking for that doubt in his eyes, that look he'd gotten when she'd tried to tell him about Mason. She realized that this time, he had absolute faith in her and though it was not the time or place for it, she felt a little tingle in her chest in response.

"One or two I... I was a little preoccupied with the attacking to really tell." Brow furrowed as she tried to remember just how many there had been. Definitely two, she thought, recalling the disembodied laughter and shivered in response.

"Nothing." Which was the whole problem. "I mean, there's usually faces... hands." But he would have known that. As Strigoi, they had been reaching for him when she'd tried to flee him in Siberia.

"We're in an underwater prison. I don't know why I thought it would be normal." A little of her usual attitude shining through, a fallback for whenever she felt uneasy.

Dimitri's brows furrowed as he pondered that briefly. "If you cannot feel Lissa, and if those are the only things you could see, that could mean a few things. That we really are entirely cut off from anything outside of this place. And that very few have died here, human or otherwise."

Because she was right, he remembered being attacked by them, and it had felt like they were everywhere, all around him. One or two, and not even previously human? It was both comforting and ominous.

Dimitri shook his head, using his hands to brush hair away from her face...until he realized what he was doing, noticed how close they were. It made him back off a bit, as her emotions and his own reaction to them had seemingly overwhelmed him, and he looked a little exhausted as he sat back, though he stayed close.

"I doubt anyone could have prepared for something like that," he said.

Something that almost looked like hope started to show in her eyes, Rose holding her breath as his fingertips brushed over her skin, little shivers of pleasure making her tingle in the wake of his touch… That vanished as he pulled back.

Rose’s body immediately longed for that touch again but she said nothing, her lips pressing together as her eyes dropped away. Even here it was foolish to have hope where he was concerned, she had to remember that. Just because he was with her now, didn’t mean that he wanted to be. It was about where they were, not who she was.

“Right… yeah.” An uneasy, forced chuckle escaping her lips as she sat herself upright, the ghost of his touch still taunting her as she rubbed the sore spot on the back of her head, frowning a little as she sat cross-legged on the floor of the beach shack.

“So what do you think the chances are of them having McDonald’s in an underwater prison?” Rose trying to make a joke – even if she would think that was perfection – to try and ease the discomfort she felt now that they were back to business mode. “I’m starving and I’m so sick of prison food.” Not that food should have been a priority. They could hardly keep living in this shack but it worked for a night or two, until they could gather more information.

Dimitri could see it, that hope lingering in her eyes, and he couldn't keep doing that to her. Not when he wasn't capable of what she needed, and especially not when there was someone waiting for her at home who was.

It didn't mean he didn't want to be near her; he did. But what he wanted didn't matter now.

"Unlikely, I would say," he said, glancing away from her toward the door of the beach hut. "We should take a look around some of the other sectors. I'm sure we can find you something to eat that you might like." Because if the rest of the prison was like what they'd seen so far, restaurants would be a thing. Maybe even grocery stores.

Disappointment still burned hot in her chest but Rose said nothing more, getting her feet beneath her so that she could stand, determined to refuse any offered help if it should come her way. Soon enough she imagined they would go their separate ways, either at his or her insistence. Once it became clear that there was no going back, no vow to honor and no point in sticking together, it would likely return to how it was before she’d been taken by the Palace Guardians. Maybe that was unfair of her to think, but better expect the worst than be let down again and she had to start thinking about this in a different way, about what she needed to do next.

“Typical. They better have a burger joint somewhere. Or donuts.” Giving her head one last rub, Dimitri one last look that perhaps held a little too much longing in it before she started for the entry to the hut, the light making her squint as she adjusted to the day.

“I don’t think we should stay here again tonight.” She added, more to keep her mind focused on the important things. As long as they had plans she could distract herself from the rest of it. “Get food, work out our next step then, we can go from there.” Oh she spoke in terms of we, but the whole while she was considering when to go it alone.

Dimitri pressed his lips together and remained steadfast and impassive; he wasn't unaware of those lingering looks, had seen them before. He didn't need to give her any reason to believe otherwise, or other false hope. She had Adrian back home, and he didn't deserve to even think about being good enough for her. Not anymore.

"I'm sure they have something," he said, beginning to follow after her, squinting as well as bright light filtered into his eyes.

"It sounds like you have a plan worked out. I'll follow your lead." For once. Her idea was solid enough, and they did need to get food first. Besides, perhaps it would make her feel a bit better to be in charge. Since there was no way for her to run off and get herself captured and killed, he didn't see the harm.

Not that he wouldn't reign her in in a moment if he needed to.

That threw her, just a little, the idea that he would let her call the shots. She likened it to him and driving, Dimitri’s endless need to be the one in control. It explained how they butted heads as often as they did. Maybe even explained a little of the attraction that had once been mutual. It was still there of course, just very one sided as far as Rose could see.

“As far as plans go, it’s pretty weak.” She admitted, falling into step with him, eyes moving over the beach as her feet sunk into the sand, shoe’s likely filling with the stuff. She stopped and turned back, able to see the water now for the first time during the day and a sad sort of smile touched her lips.

“Lissa and I went to the beach once. It was a holiday her family took us on.” Before the accident. Before everything had changed.

She shook her head, trying to push that thought away when all it did was renew the longing she felt for the bond. For Lissa. Rose hated more than anything that she didn’t know how her best friend was.

“I guess it’s pointless keeping to a night schedule here…” She mused as she started to trudge through the sand once more. Small talk. It all felt like small talk but it was talking which for them, was a massive improvement on how she remembered them being.

It was a weak plan, but the truth was that he didn't have a better one. Getting a lay of the land, learning their options, figuring things out one step at a time? It's what they needed to do. And what she'd suggested was a good first step.

"I enjoy the beach," he said quietly, glancing out at it with her. "It's peaceful." And for as much as he could fight, what Dimitri wanted most was peace. It was the reason he did his job, in the hopes that someday they could achieve it.

Maybe someday he'd have internal peace as well, though he wouldn't ask for it. He didn't deserve such a thing anymore.

"This place seems to run on a day schedule, like most of the world. It would be a good idea to do the same." The way they would have if they were still home, and on the run.

“It’s one thing I missed when we came back to the Academy.” Talking to fill the silence as she so often did, but also because Dimitri always had a way of making her feel comfortable enough to say whatever was on her mind, even if it revealed a great deal about her.

“The sun? It was hard on Liss but with school, we didn’t have much of a choice.” But it was nice right now, the warmth she felt licking her skin, even if there was every chance that it wasn’t real. Even Rose had made herself read all that she could from their devices, not even skimming the boring bits like she normally would. If she was understanding it all right, this was one big underwater prison. Not the easiest kind to break out of. Then again, neither was Terasov or the Royal Prisons and they’d still managed that.

Rose led them without really knowing where she was going, eyes constantly moving around, never resting long enough on anything to really take it in, just looking for signs of danger, despite appearing casual, her mind however stuck on something that she hadn’t been able to shake ever since they’d started learning more about their new ‘home’.

“Do you think we’ll ever see them again?” It may have sounded like she’d given up hope of escape, but it wasn’t that simple. “I just mean… The bond is gone. If what they say is true, Lissa and the others have no idea we’re gone.” Her frown deepened. “Even if we do find a way out of here without getting killed… We might not be able to make it back to them.”

"I think that's the human part of us. It craves the sunlight." They didn't have much of their human genes leaving a mark on them, but their lack of a thirst for blood and enjoyment of the sunshine were two of them. But their lives called for a different life, and that was all there was to it. Dhampir weren't supposed to questions that, not when living otherwise was impossible for their charges.

"We should enjoy it while we can." Because he was assuming that, someday, they'd escape this place.

It didn't matter that neither of them truly knew where they were going; they would learn the ins and outs and the proper roads to take by exploring rather than checking a map or following directions.

"I don't know," he said, glancing up toward the sky, or in this case, the dome. It was hard to imagine that this entire city was underwater sometimes. "But we can't give up if that's the ultimate goal."

“Oh believe me, I will.” That soft smile still in place as she felt the warmth lick her skin, a memory of what seemed like forever ago dancing through her head; Her and Dimitri outside the dorms. A few stolen moments when nobody else was around. All they’d had til now was stolen moments it seemed.

Give up? Was that what she was thinking about doing? She could hardly be blamed if that was the case. Surely even Rose Hathaway had a limit to how many ridiculous plans she could pull off and yet, she wouldn’t be the Dhampir she was today if she could let a little thing like the impossible deter her from trying. Restoring a Strigoi was meant to have been impossible after all.

“I’m just thinking out aloud.” About things they hadn’t discussed for obvious reasons, things that shouldn’t have been a priority and yet she couldn’t seem to push out of her mind. Things like… Was Adrian still her boyfriend when technically there was another Rose dating him back home? Funny how that was something she was willing to consider when she refused to acknowledge that substitute Rose would ever be able to replace her as Lissa’s best friend.

Without even realizing it, Rose found herself heading back to the same area they had first arrived, seeking out the vaguely familiar in a place that was still very foreign to them and yet, it was a lot like being back home in a way. The surroundings admittedly more like something she’d seen on TV than anything she’d seen herself, but it wasn’t alien, just new.

“Terasov could learn a thing or two from this place…” Never mind the fact that Rose was not supposed to know anything about what the Terasov prison was like.

There in this sunshine, Dimitri found himself glancing down at her hand, and he was overcome with the urge to reach out and hold it in his, to take her for a walk down the beach. It was a strange feeling, one that would have not only been impossible back home, but he should have discarded. She wasn't his. He had no right to think about that kind of thing.

He hummed lightly in understanding. Dimitri didn't think out loud, and that was part of their communication issue. All of his pondering and agonizing he did alone, within his own head, allowing no one else to suffer what he felt on a consistent basis.

He was convinced it was better that way, especially for her.

Dimitri followed after her, half a step behind (he had to shorten his footfalls to do so), and just to her right side. He'd be partially in her blind spot, but that kept them from having one.

Habit.

Her words caught his attention though, and almost made him pause. "Terasov?" Ruh roh. "What do you know about Terasov?" There was only one connection that Dimitri could make in his mind between Rose and the prison and it was...not one he wanted to make.

Part, but not all. There were times when they didn’t need to speak at all to know exactly what the other was thinking or feeling and though that might still have been true, so much damage had been done in the last few weeks that Rose at least no longer trusted those instincts the way she once had. She might not suffer along with him, but she suffered in other ways.

“Uh…” Rose’s footsteps faltered, all but coming to a halt before she thought better of stopping. Not only did standing out in the open make them an easy target, standing still would make her an easier one for Dimitri, the brunette turning her head so she might hide her momentary look of oh shit.

“Just… what I’ve heard.” The lie making her stomach twist because she hated lying to Dimitri. Explaining Terasov though? It meant explaining Victor which would no doubt come with a lecture worthy only of her Russian mentor and Rose wasn’t sure she could withstand that without losing her temper, even if a part of her wished that he had the faintest idea what she had gone through to bring him back.

Still... She was an idiot if she thought he'd swallow that lie, but a girl could hope.

Well, that was telling.

"Rose." His voice was firm and demanding. The pause in her step, the glimpse of her expression before she knowingly tried to turn her head away.

This was one of those moments where there was no way in hell she could have ever hidden from him. The tiny pause in the obvious lie only served to slowly burn away at his, fortunately, very extreme patience.

"You heard no such thing." His hand came to his face, pressing into his forehead as if he had a headache. "Please tell me you haven't been there."

But he already knew, and he had a very good idea why.

Stronger people than Rose could have been crushed under the weight of that voice, Rose’s shoulders tensing, hating that he was reprimanding her. If he knew the truth though? Well if he was pissed at her now it would be nothing compared to what he would be if she explained it all to him and rather than submit to his interrogations, anger flared in her chest, anger she couldn’t quite explain as she came to a stop and turned on him.

“What does any of this matter now, hrmm?” Perhaps couldn’t quite explain wasn’t the best way to describe it. She knew where it came from. She had all but walked through fire to restore him, hell she would have done that too if she’d needed to and yet Lissa was the one he credited, the one who saved him, the one he owed. She got cast aside like she was nothing and now she was stuck here with him having to be constantly reminded of how she felt about him and how he didn’t feel about her and, well for want of a more eloquent way of putting it? It sucked!

Rose took a deep breath and slowly let it out, trying to calm herself the way she’d seen him do a thousand times before. While a part of her wanted to tell him everything, wanted to make him see that he did owe her, she also knew she didn’t want him to only stick around out of some stupid debt he felt he needed to pay and that, more than anything else was what helped her to hold her tongue.

“Some things you’re just better off not knowing okay.” Trying to force a calm she didn’t quite feel.

While he'd be angry, it might also serve to explain Rose's anger in regards to his feelings about Lissa. Because while he remembered her coming to end his life, he didn't know the rest. And there was a lot of it.

"It matters to me."

Rose's life mattered, all the things he'd missed. More and more they mattered, his time with her affecting him little by little. He caught himself watching her the way he used to, and he could feel things stirring beneath the guilt that washed over him repeatedly.

Dimitri watched as she calmed herself, and was struck by the ways in which she'd also grown. Time had changed them both, in ways both obvious and subtle.

"Maybe you're right." He wanted to know, but perhaps he wasn't privy to that knowledge, didn't get to know what was going on in her head. And there were things in his mind he couldn't burden her with.

It was one of those moments when she really didn’t know what to do. She could understand his desire to know everything because they were a lot alike that way and though, Rose might have once gotten some perverse pleasure out of being the one with all the information for a change, that wasn’t what this was about. He had enough guilt. He didn’t need the guilt of knowing she’d allowed the man who had terrorised them to get away, all in the pursuit of finding a way to save him. That was all on her.

“A lot of things happened while you were gone and… One day if you decide you have to know what went down, then we’ll talk.” It kept the door open for the discussion so that she wasn’t completely shutting him down. They needed to reach a point when she could tell him about these things without feeling angry about how he had treated her and the truth was, that day hadn’t come yet.

“But I don’t think today is that day so… Let’s just get some food and plan our next move.” A small part of her almost proud of herself for managing to sound… like a true Guardian.
