[ day 206 ] action :: open
[It’s very late at night in the prison, if anyone is still awake or out and about. Were anyone to pass through Sector 0 they might find an older gentleman in his Starfleet uniform sitting on a bench in the recreation area. He’s quiet and still, somewhat unassuming. He might even be mistaken for peaceful from far away. But were anyone to come closer, they’d find that he has somewhat of a perplexed look on his face, troubled or thoughtful perhaps. And his gaze is turned up to the top of the dome. Obviously he’s not as peaceful as it might initially seem.]

[ Data hasn't been utilizing his dream program much in the facility - he has too many other things to occupy his time with, though he's rapidly becoming well-acquainted with the feeling of frustration as one investigative avenue after another provides him with little in the way of conclusive information. Of course, that means that he's not shutting down his cognitive processes to achieve the android equivalent of sleep, which means he's up at any given hour.

Which is why he comes across the Captain. He approaches, studying Picard's expression with a hint of concern as he does so, before inquiring softly: ]

Captain?

[Jean-Luc is so intent on the roof of the dome that he's let his guard down. He doesn't see or hear or even sense the approaching android. So when he hears the familiarity of his title, he sits up a little straighter, squares his shoulders a bit, and looks through the darkness in the direction of the voice, already knowing he'll find Data at the other end of it.]

Ah. Data. I would ask if you were having trouble sleeping as well, but... [Instead, he opts for something else.] Out for a midnight stroll?

[ He gives a slight nod in response as he approaches to within a few feet, remaining standing to the side of the bench. ]

There are certain differences in observing the dome during the night, as opposed to the day.

[ Not that there's been anything new. The current point of his focus, and naturally his top priority, is the Captain's welfare. Difficulty sleeping is often tied to preoccupation, for humans - you don't observe behavior for as long as he has and not pick that up. ]

Sir - if I may inquire, is something troubling you?

[For all of Data's study of humanity, and for all of his knowledge of humanity, it still caught Jean-Luc just a little bit by surprise when Data happened to show such insight. And he hoped that Data would always surprise him in such a way. For as Data learned and understood, Jean-Luc felt as if he did as well.]

Yes, Data. I suppose it is troubling, the realization that there are no stars. Of course, logically I knew this. But knowing something and paying attention to the fact that it is so are two entirely different things, are they not?

[ It always does come with a small moment of satisfaction - a satisfaction he can feel, now - when he is correct in his theories about the moods of those around him. Of course, the Captain's words are far more important than his own small accomplishment, and he considers them for a quiet moment, a brow quirked as he nods slowly. ]

Then observing the absence of stars underscores your intellectual awareness of the situation.

[ And he considers their examination of the Phoenix for him, one of the more recent instances he has attempted to understand. ]

It makes it... "more real"?

[ He glances up himself, considering it, and frowns as he studies the darkness. ]

[ seven, on the other hand, has spent the majority of the day regenerating. while it wasn't necessary for her do so for that long, it gave her ample reasoning to remain in her quarters room and avoid seeking out any nutritional supplements by way of making it up for it by regenerating overtime. not very human of her, but that, of course, was the point. when seven hits walls in her continued exploration of her humanity that frighten her or make her feel unsteady on her feet, she often retreats to the corners she feels are safest, more secure, and that usually includes taking steps backward in the progress she's made.

when she emerges, it's with her hair up in that familiar french twist and one of her skintight dermal sheaths - the maroon one - pulled on. it's the first time in over a week that she's worn one of the and not had her hair down, but that's too human and right now, while she's feeling confused, uncertain, and vulnerable, being borg is a protective layer that acts as a defense mechanism when she needs to keep her guard up.

she was not expecting to encounter the captain when she left the apartment, bound for somewhere where the chance of running into commander data was low. ]

[Here in the unknown of the dome, Jean-Luc usually prides himself on being attentive to everything around him. Now is not one of those moments. And were it anyone else aside from Seven or Data who approached him, he would berate himself for allowing himself to become so absorbed in his thoughts out here in the open.

The words startle him, but then he settles into a more rigid posture that's more familiar to him. And while it may look tense, it's relaxing for the Captain.

Perhaps you should administer a mild sedative to assist in that process. [ and then she moves as if to walk past him, to continue on her way as she would've had she not happened upon him.

day before last, seven would've stopped to talk and even made with her own attempts at idle chitchat. tonight, however, she does not wish to converse and only wants to busy herself with tasks that aren't over analyzing the events from yesterday. ]

Oh I'd much rather be in complete control of my faculties, thank you. [The mistletoe bots had left him with a sour taste in his mouth and since then he'd been very much on edge. Of course, back on the Enterprise he would have gone to the bridge or Ten-Forward, both with magnificent views of their current solar system, a sight that promised that things were ever in a state of flux, that if he was feeling uncomfortable, there would soon be something else to focus on. Here there is no such thing.

Before Seven can get too far, Jean-Luc speaks again as if he didn't notices that she had attempted to walk away.

[He can't be completely certain what compelled him to look up. Perhaps it was a creak in the wood of the tree. Perhaps it was the sound of a breath. Or perhaps it was that instinct that anyone has when they're being watched. But finally, Jean-Luc looks up and spies the dark mass in the branches of the tree. He peers at it for just a few seconds before he stands up from the bench and steps back, turning to look back and get a better look.]

Buffy is a night owl. It's part of the whole slayer gig and after years of operating at night, she's gotten into a groove. She patrols with a stake tucked in the waistband of her pants, fairly casual about the whole thing. Prison is absolutely making her soft because she's sort of just wandering along without a lot of awareness.

When she catches sight of Jean-luc sitting on the bench, she walks over toward him.

"Hey, can't sleep? Or natural night owl?"

Speaking of awareness, Jean-Luc is having the same problem. He almost doesn't notice her until she's right up on him and speaking to him. He looks over, finally... aware. And his features don't soften per say. It's more like they fall into something that looks like familiarity.

"Ms. Summers. A pleasure, as always." He looks back up to the roof of the dome. "I'm afraid I fall into the sleepless category tonight. And what of you and your gallivanting about at such a late hour?"

She notices that look of familiarity and it's nice, comforting. She sits down on the bench next to him and looks up as well.

"I'm sort of a night owl and I don't need much sleep anyway. Four hours is kind of a lot-ish for me. Thinking deep thinky kind of thoughts or just general sleeplessness?"

"Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing, doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before." As he quotes the ancient (in his time) words, his look turns to one of amusement.

And finally he nods. "Yes, there are always deep thoughts, Buffy. And I've never been one to succumb to an overabundance of sleep either. Life has always felt too short to waste it away in bed."

Rose is out wandering the prison. She's been here long enough that she can't really call it exploring anymore. She's gotten used to keeping all sorts of hours. She smiles when she sees someone else awake at this hour and walks over.

"S'kinda nice this time a night, innit? All quiet and the like."

This one he sees coming, thank goodness. Everyone else seems to have caught him off guard in one way or another. Her smile is bright enough to see even in the dark, dimly lit area of sector zero. And her accent... well, it's been some time since he's heard such and it brings with it fond memories.

"That it is. Barely anyone stirring. Although it seems that the quiet stillness does draw out the select few."

It is nice to hear a British accent. There are a few of them in the prison, but they're definitely in the majority. His, however, is more proper British than hers is.

"S'good for lookin' up at the stars and thinkin'." She looks up at the stars when she says this. "Even if they aren't real stars." She looks back down at him. "Don't think we've met. 'm Rose Tyler."

Of course, Jean-Luc's is a mixture of British and French. In his time the British accent as taken over much of the continent. And Jean-Luc has traveled so much that his own accent is somewhat diluted and morphed into something of its own. But his brother Robert, in the heart of France, has very much the same cockney sort of accent as Rose, an accent Jean-Luc remembers slipping into upon his rare visits home.

"Oh, of course." He stands and curtly nods a proper greeting. "Rose Tyler, I'm Captain Jean-Luc Picard." He gestures to the bench. "Won't you join me?"

[Lacus has been doing much the same thing, albeit with a somewhat more hopeful tint. Her star projector is very nearly complete, and while it's a poor substitute for the true starscape she so misses, it will at least provide something to look up at, a manifestation of the wishes and dreams and loves of those who reside here. Something the Wardens can't take away.]

[She's naturally drawn to people, and particularly so to ones that seem troubled. The man's domeward gaze further solidifies her intent, and she adjusts her path to send her past him. Lacus is singing softly to herself in her strong, soothing voice, an old Earth song:]

When I find myself in times of trouble
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom...

[She interrupts her quiet song to smile at the seated man.]
Good evening.

[It’s the singing that catches his attention first. Usually in his world songs come from a digital recording. It’s rare to hear someone sing first hand unless one catches a specific recital on the Enterprise. Otherwise, he would have to catch an opera while in port to hear it with such clarity. So he sits and listens, unsure whether she even knows he’s there until she stops her song to greet him.

He nods.
] Good evening. What a lovely voice you have.

Thank you.

[She settles down, smoothing out her dress as she sits, and looks upwards.] It's a bit unsettling without stars. I'm quite unused to being so far removed from them. [There's more than a touch of nostalgia in her voice, for countless reasons.] Singing is a comfort to me in their absence.

[Another space traveler, it would seem. And this naturally inclines Jean-Luc to like her. She’s also taken the words right out of his mouth, or his mind if you will, so that of course he’s inclined to agree with her. And he does so with a nod as his gaze shifts upward again.] Implying that the stars themselves have their own voice with which they sing. Yes, I’m inclined to agree.

[It’s a moment later that he continues.] I take it you’ve experience with being among the stars?
