[ day 206 ] action :: open
[It’s very late at night in the prison, if anyone is still awake or out and about. Were anyone to pass through Sector 0 they might find an older gentleman in his Starfleet uniform sitting on a bench in the recreation area. He’s quiet and still, somewhat unassuming. He might even be mistaken for peaceful from far away. But were anyone to come closer, they’d find that he has somewhat of a perplexed look on his face, troubled or thoughtful perhaps. And his gaze is turned up to the top of the dome. Obviously he’s not as peaceful as it might initially seem.]

[Of all the replies he'd thought he might hear? That was not one of them, and only served as a confusion.]

What? A quest in which galaxy exactly?

It's a show. On TV.

A bunch of mismatched aliens and humans go out on space adventures.

Sorry, your outfit reminded me of that.

My uniform. [Because outfit just sounds so undignified at the moment.] I see.

[He gives his uniform top a slight tug.] I'm afraid I'm unfamiliar with television. It was popular far before my time. I do know that it provided entertainment for generations on Earth, so I'm certain these... space adventures were most... diverting.

Diverting is one way to put it. I wasn't allowed to watch much but a cousin of mine did.

I wouldn't mind going to space myself one day.

Oh it is wondrous, indeed. Space travel is quite common where I'm from.

[Which of course brings him to his next question, one borne out of curiosity more than anything.] May I ask what species you are?

Lucky.

[He tilts is head slightly and curl the corners of his mouth into a smile.]

Good question. Homo Sapian Leonidae? Or something of that sort.

[That’s somewhat confusing to Jean-Luc as his definition of homosapien is not what he’s seeing even in the dimly lit shadows of sector zero in what passes for nighttime here in the dome. However, he’s also played witness to far too much in his lifetime to be so narrow-minded as to completely discount the idea. So he does what he normally does when encountering something new and unknown.

He steps forward again, another light tug at his uniform top and his tenor of voice hinting at genuine excitement.
] Well then, perhaps it would behoove us to introduce ourselves. I’m Captain Jean-Luc Picard.

['Behoove'? That makes him tilt his head as he leaps from the tree, landing on all fours. He lifts up on his hind legs, seeming to have a bit of bipedal locomotion but his hand is still paw when he offers it.

I'm Matt, but I usually go by Shadow.

Shadow. [He watches carefully, the way Matt moves, his manner and his stature, just as he would with any alien species. Hand shaking is something he recognizes, although not something he does all that frequently. He’d learned in his travels that it was best to wait for the type of greeting one offered unless otherwise previously known. Usually he just nodded politely.

But in this instance, he only briefly hesitates before taking the paw and shaking it firmly before letting go.
] And where do you hail from?

Earth. [This he says flatly, as if it were obvious.]

[He hadn’t really expected that answer, no. In his world there are no creatures that look like him and can speak as he is speaking. Someone has already spoken to him of alternate realities of the same world though, so it takes little effort to shift his perspective to a parallel understanding. Although it doesn’t escape his notice that Shadow had assumed he was asking about which planet he was from rather than something more specific as most people did. So he opts to narrow it down for him.]

I see. Where on Earth?

Philadelphia. Good food, but the crime rate's pretty high.

[He knows where Philadelphia is, and really the prospect of a world like his own in which creatures like Shadow existed was both interesting to him and exciting. Needless to say, he wants to know more about it and he's never made any effort to subdue his own curiosity in a seemingly harmless situation.]

I'm curious, are there others like yourself in your world?

Yes. My kin, my family. We command darkness, and some of us, like me can change forms.

A shape-shifter. [This of course made him think of Q initially, and his ability to choose his form. And that would seamlessly segue into wondering what other forms Shadow might be able to take on. Had he met him before in another form? It was difficult to tell, and a possibility that brought about a twinge of unease.]

What do you mean, you command darkness?

That is I can manipulate it. Shadows and the like. [ He drops down, as if there was a hole beneath him, completly disapearing into the cast shadow at his feet. All Picard could see then was a sillouette of the lion, before it stretched into another shadow and disapeared. He ended up back in the tree.]

[He watches with a sense of both awe and trepidation. The visual reminded him quite a bit of Armus, the creature who had ultimately led to the death of one of his crew and a dear friend. However, he also assumed that if Shadow were dangerous to him, the other had had ample opportunity to harm him and yet hadn't.]

That is a most extraordinary talent, Shadow. Useful for moving about virtually unnoticed.
