[ day 206 ] action :: open
[It’s very late at night in the prison, if anyone is still awake or out and about. Were anyone to pass through Sector 0 they might find an older gentleman in his Starfleet uniform sitting on a bench in the recreation area. He’s quiet and still, somewhat unassuming. He might even be mistaken for peaceful from far away. But were anyone to come closer, they’d find that he has somewhat of a perplexed look on his face, troubled or thoughtful perhaps. And his gaze is turned up to the top of the dome. Obviously he’s not as peaceful as it might initially seem.]

Of course, Jean-Luc's is a mixture of British and French. In his time the British accent as taken over much of the continent. And Jean-Luc has traveled so much that his own accent is somewhat diluted and morphed into something of its own. But his brother Robert, in the heart of France, has very much the same cockney sort of accent as Rose, an accent Jean-Luc remembers slipping into upon his rare visits home.

"Oh, of course." He stands and curtly nods a proper greeting. "Rose Tyler, I'm Captain Jean-Luc Picard." He gestures to the bench. "Won't you join me?"

Then she really is a dose of home in an accent for him. She grins at the proper greeting and dips into a sort of clumsy half curtsey that she only learned for Queen Elizabeth.

"S'brilliant to meet you," she responds and nods before sitting down. "Thanks. You been in the prison long?"

Once she’s seated, he returns to sitting down beside her. His hands clasp neatly in his lap as he glances up again. He has to think about how long he’s been in the prison now, something he doesn’t usually consider, although he probably should. “Just over four weeks, I believe. My goodness it does seem longer than that. Perhaps I should take to keeping a daily tally on the walls in my flat.”

He looks over to her. “And you, Ms. Tyler? How long have you been here?”

"Yeah, s'hard to keep time here. Dunno why s'xactly. Tally marks could turn into a whole design patter." She bites her bottom lip, tallying the time in her head. "Coupla months? Maybe a little more."

That comment is met with a light, breathy chuckle and an arched brow to show his amusement. “Oh I’ve very little artistic talent in any respects.” He remembers full well that art class he’d taken on the Enterprise, and how everyone had scoffed at his drawings. While Data could replicate most any image he saw with pinpoint accuracy onto a blank canvas. But then that was always the clincher with Data, his attempts to add personality to that perfection.

As he studies Rose, he finds himself wondering what she might have done to earn herself imprisonment. By his estimation it didn’t seem to take much. And there were many people who didn’t deserve to be here. “Your accent is familiar. If I were to venture a guess, I’d say Earth… the United Kingdom? Annnd…. With even more pinpoint accuracy… London.”

"I'm not really an artist either. " She's never attempted an art class, but she's fairly sure she's got no talent whatsoever.

A great deal actually. She'd be happy to tell him about it at some point. She doesn't regret any of it and wouldn't change what she'd done if she was given the option. "Yeah, grew up there. Spent most of the first nineteen years of my life there. Can't quite place your accent though."

"Lebarre, France. I was raised on a vineyard there with my brother, Robert." In his travels his accent has become much more refined though, with great effort on his own part. Jean-Luc had always been somewhat more dignified than his parents and brother probably appreciated. He was supposed to work the vineyard, after all, not keep his nose in books and eventually steal away to Starfleet Academy as he had against their wishes.

"I've been to London a handful of times though. A lovely city." He comments.

"I like it. Miss it sometimes," Rose comments, watching Jean-Luc. He is rather dignified. She likes it though.

"Growin' up on a vineyard had to be brillant though."

"Oh it was lovely. Plenty of room for a boy to run and dream, much to the ire of my parents. They wanted me to work the vineyard and eventually own the land as I became older, along with Robert. But I had different plans. I was going to be an explorer. And how could they have expected anything different when the lights in the vineyard were so dark that at night one could look up and see billions of stars?" His lips twist into a wry grin at the memory. Ultimately, the room to dream was what had driven him away while Robert's feet stayed firmly planted in the vineyard... and still were to this day.

He looks back up to the ceiling of the dome. "From the day I left, the stars became my home, more than Lebarre had ever been. Home is a place that is easy to miss, whether it be London or the stars."

His story gets a big smile out of her. She looks up to the ceiling as well. "Don't know how you could look at 'em and not want to get closer." The stars she means, of course. So she doesn't blame him for not wanting to keep his feet on the ground.

Her comment does surprise him though, because he couldn't tell if she was speaking because she had those same dreams he'd had as a young boy, or whether she's speaking from experience. "You speak as if you've had the very same dreams, Ms. Tyler. May I assume that to be so."

She shakes her head at his question. "Never dreamed of goin' up in the stars. Never thought I'd do much more then maybe manager at a shoppe 'til I met the Doctor. Wouldn't have mattered. Never coulda dreamed 'bout the things he showed me. I got to see the Universe, the stars, different planets. It was brilliant." She smiles a bit wistfully. "Makes keepin' my feet on the ground hard. Even with him here."

"Oh yes, once space travel is experienced I find it difficult to understand how a person could ever want for planetary life again aside from the occasional visit." After his traumatic assimilation with the Borg, Jean-Luc had returned home to recuperate. Even then he couldn't make himself stay still for long.

He found himself curious though. "I take it this Doctor is a space traveler?"

She nodded a bit. "Yeah, after a sort. We ended up on a lotta space stations anyway. Time traveler too."

Rose has spent all her 'break' trying to find a way to get to the Doctor again. She'd missed him so much that she'd ached with it, but she'd missed the stars, the planets, the aliens and the travel as well. The fact that all of that was going on in the universe and she was stuck in one place frustrated her.
