I've been convicted of a murder that I didn't commit. And I literally mean an actual murder I didn't commit -- it's not something back home that I'm just too chickenshit to fess up to.

And the thing is, Veridical stuck this D/s collar on me, so at first I thought it was just making up some excuse to avoid admitting it was jealous that I'm already in a relationship. But then it turned out I'm not the only one being punished.

So who all out there has to deal with this bullshit today?

You've got that right. [He shrugs.] And we're young, we put up with that kind suck better than adults. [Completely serious here. Adults fall in with the depravity so much faster than young people do, he thinks.]

That's another thing I wouldn't really know, so I'll just take your word for it.

You've never been around adults before either? Did you live in a box? [Serious question even if he completely lacks tact while asking it.]

There were no adults. Or anyone, really, besides me and one other person.

I don't know if that would be awesome or too boring for me to think about. What'd you do if there were only two of you?

Not a lot. Watched movies. Read books. She did genetic engineering, I built robots.

[Genetic...what? The things kids get up to if you leave them alone too long.] "She"? Your sister?

My friend. The one other human who was alive. We're not related.

...it's a really long story. Maybe I'll write a pamphlet on it someday, since people keep trying to socialize by asking where I'm from and it turns into this federal issue.

It sounds kind of crazy, but most places do around here. Makes me wonder where the wardens are finding people.

Strange situations probably breed more criminals than average suburban whitebread life.

Haha, yeah, Gotham is the least "suburby" place I can think of. It's not so bad though once I you get used to it.

Sounds like a gritty name for a gritty place.

[ ...Dirk's canonically aware of the Batman franchise here, though he's strategically trying to avoid breaking anyone's brain. ]

Gritty's a good word for it. But it's still not that bad. Lots of screwed up people trying to get through their screw up lives, but they're still just people.

[He's already met another Dick Grayson from a Nice Gotham, so finding out his world is fiction in some universe wouldn't be that surprising.]

Tautologically speaking, yes.

...I have no idea what that word means.

It means defining something as itself. Like, "I'm me" or "that's how things are".

So what did you mean by that anyway? People are only people tautologically?

[info]smuppeteer

The phrase "people are people" is tautological. Essentially, it's so self-evident as to be meaningless.

[Dick is not stupid, but he not afraid to admits he's young enough that he doesn't know everything. Still, Dirk's explanation doesn't make much sense to him.]

...You know I think you missed the point. Usually when people say something like that it's because really means something, not because it doesn't. Why would someone say something they didn't want to have any kind of meaning? Like...those things should be obvious, but you gotta remind people because they don't seem to keep what they mean in mind anyway.

[ Dirk on the other hand thinks he pointed out something fairly evident, but wasn't expecting an actual response. ]

...I don't get it.

People are people right? So that means something about being a person. Something people should get, but not everyone does, you know? [Does that make any sense? He's twelve not a school teacher.]

[info]smuppeteer

I... guess? [ Dirk doesn't people very well. ]

I guess it means...like people are fallible, they screw up, because we're not perfect. We're not all good, but we aren't all bad. If you don't know what it means to be a person, then you won't get it.

That make more sense?
