Day 197 / Midday / Video
[Jack's been here a couple of hours. He spent the first hour disbelieving and furious, but wary of letting that show too much after his initial, instinctive bout of yelling – which he didn't broadcast, although sorely tempted to, because he's been kidnapped before and he doesn't want to get in too much trouble until he knows far better what he's up against. So he kept his head down and started exploring to get the lay of the land and find out what he had to work with here.

[And then he found the beach. He'd never lost his love of the sea from growing up beside an ocean, and he was out of the horrible orange jumpsuit and into the water before he'd even thought about it. Even if the waves and the sun on his back weren't quite natural, an hour or so of vigorous swimming calmed him down a lot. Enough to make his first transmission on the network with a decent amount of composure and a fair imitation of his normal cocky grin.

[He's still naked, by the way. It's kind of lucky (or maybe not, depending on your point of view) that the video doesn't extend below the waist. Not that Jack cares what you see. He's sprawled on the beach, the waves breaking gently behind him, feeling the sun on his tanned skin, and he's smiling. After all these years of practice, it's a pretty convincing smile.]

So. MarinaNova. [He rolls the name around his mouth, trying it out.] What've we got? Any hot babes here? Or hot guys – I'm really not picky. Maybe some Italian stud who actually looks good in orange? There'd better be something good to pass the time if I'm supposed to be here for the rest of my life!

You'd be surprised, actually. Try me.

[ a small sigh, not quite exasperated yet. ] If you insist. Giedi Prime, Arrakis, Kaitain?

Okay, no, not ringing any bells.

What time period? Proximity to Earth? Or are we talking completely separate universe?

[He assumes Piter's been here long enough to figure that out.]

"Earth" is very ancient history in the year 10191.

...Separate universe it is. Earth is still well and truly there then, in mine.

Merely very separate times, I should think. [ very, very separate. ] It's been centuries and centuries since your planet was inhabited, but it has not disappeared.

Well, it’s still inhabited in the year 200,100 in mine. Believe me, I’ve been there.

So I'm still thinking different universe. Unless you're just using a different calendar, of course?

[ a pause, once again coupled with a little scowl because he does so loathe being wrong. ] Perhaps you are correct. [ and here's an extra little test: ] I would assume that your Earth still makes use of computers?

[ it's still a struggle to not instinctively call them "thinking machines," and he doesn't quite bother to hide his disdain. ]

[Jack manfully manages not to smirk at him having to admit he's wrong. He's more intrigued by the 'computers' comment anyway.]

Oh god yeah. There are computers behind everything, especially in that time. Bots, too - not dissimilar to some of those here.

[He smirks, remembering the Trine-E and Zu-Zana bots, and then raises his eyebrows, interested in Piter's response.]

[ he still has not perfected the illogical thought that marina forces him to entertain— rather than having once taken up residence in the same universe as the earth, he now is a former resident of the same universe as an earth. and what's more, one that never found itself touched by the jihad. ]

It baffles me that humanity limits itself so. Thinking machines may seem convenient, but they allow the minds of men to rot— and our dear wardens prove the dangers that they all too often pose.

[It's not a completely new outlook to Jack, but it's long enough since he's heard it to give him pause.]

Interesting viewpoint. You don't have computers where you come from, then? Not at all?

We have machinery, of course— we are not luddites— but no thinking machines, nothing made to emulate the human mind, for humans have already replaced such creations.

[Jack finds that chuckle rather hot, despite its smugness. He grins.]

So, a human computer from the future. Never guessed I was going to meet one of those this afternoon!

[ come to think of it, piter has found himself feeling a little warm today. not necessarily "hot," but certainly experiencing a temperature that is slightly elevated from the one at which his usual body heat is wont to plateau at. ]

Not many do. I am somewhat of a commodity. [ and he grins right back, preening just a bit. he simply cannot help but enjoy when his mentat shenanigans are reacted to so positively. ]

Are you now? So what can you do, Mr Human Computer? What do they use you for, back home?

To put things very simply: I am a political adviser, though I have many facets and functions. I find myself regularly called upon for matters of diplomacy and military strategy.

[Jack's face hardens perceptibly.]

So you're a war adviser.

[Perhaps an odd attitude for a man who's spent a lot of his life in one form of the military or another, but he likes to think his battles are the kind that have to be fought.]

[ that expression is duly noted as his tone becomes a bit more impatient, more stern. ] No; you misunderstand me. I can function as a war adviser; my planet is not currently embroiled in outright military conflict. [ a war of assassins, perhaps, with battle looming— perhaps already fought, he realizes, heart sinking— but not yet total war. ] Our military and the defense of the planet and fiefs must be maintained at all times, however.

[He nods slowly.]

Okay, fair enough. That you have a function outside of wartime is... important.

[A wry smile curls around his lips.] Perhaps we're not so different, after all.

[ not so different? he believes no such thing, and it shows on his face in a politely stern expression. ] We are quite different— for you, my dear man, are no Mentat. And one who is a Mentat must be a generalist; accordingly, I am no mere war consultant, nor do I simply deal with ledgers and figures. The specialist, as the saying goes, leads one quickly into chaos. The specialist is replaceable.

[ a grin flashes across his face. ] I am not.

[The specific terms being used are unfamiliar, but the sentiment, not so much. Jack's still intrigued by the terminology though, being a man who used to know a lot about a lot of different cultures, once upon a time.]

Good to know. So you're called a Mentat?

[He lifts an eyebrow.] Been able to make anything interesting of this place at all?

[ he recognizes having gotten a bit carried away there, preoccupied with emotion, with pride. as a logical creature, the irony is not lost on him; it never has been. he nods. ] Yes, "Mentat." But I know not of this planet, and so there is little to make of the place that isn't already available— and very much, I believe, is hidden from us.
