Day 197 / Midday / Video
[Jack's been here a couple of hours. He spent the first hour disbelieving and furious, but wary of letting that show too much after his initial, instinctive bout of yelling – which he didn't broadcast, although sorely tempted to, because he's been kidnapped before and he doesn't want to get in too much trouble until he knows far better what he's up against. So he kept his head down and started exploring to get the lay of the land and find out what he had to work with here.

[And then he found the beach. He'd never lost his love of the sea from growing up beside an ocean, and he was out of the horrible orange jumpsuit and into the water before he'd even thought about it. Even if the waves and the sun on his back weren't quite natural, an hour or so of vigorous swimming calmed him down a lot. Enough to make his first transmission on the network with a decent amount of composure and a fair imitation of his normal cocky grin.

[He's still naked, by the way. It's kind of lucky (or maybe not, depending on your point of view) that the video doesn't extend below the waist. Not that Jack cares what you see. He's sprawled on the beach, the waves breaking gently behind him, feeling the sun on his tanned skin, and he's smiling. After all these years of practice, it's a pretty convincing smile.]

So. MarinaNova. [He rolls the name around his mouth, trying it out.] What've we got? Any hot babes here? Or hot guys – I'm really not picky. Maybe some Italian stud who actually looks good in orange? There'd better be something good to pass the time if I'm supposed to be here for the rest of my life!

Likewise. I've been here maybe four days?

So... buddy. Didn't catch your name. Need somebody to drop off some clothes or are you okay running around in your birthday suit?

Captain Jack Harkness. [He does the famous smile.] And you are...?

[He shakes his head, still smiling.] I am fine like this - at least until it gets cooler. Does it get here, or is the temperature constant? Ah! So much to figure out about this place!

Also, someone told me there are shops in the next sector. I'll probably head down there eventually, see what I can find.

Duo Maxwell. Nice t'neet ya cap'n.

Far as I know this is a self regulated environment. Like a space colony. All the weather is artificial and at the whim of our AI wardens.

So if you're worried about snow? Maybe. Could happen.

As for clothes you can always request your old stuff from that request kiosk too. Might be better off.

Likewise.

[He listens to all the information, storing it away carefully.]

That's the kiosk in the centre of the dome? How long does that take - to get stuff from home?

That's the one, but I don't know that since I never used the service. An hour tops I'd wager. Immedietly if you show up as you are maybe.

[Eyebrows shooting up, accompanied by a grin] Really? Well, that's what I call service! Might have to wander along there then - see if I can cause a commotion there too!

Although, really, if they're so willing to give us our old clothes back, why not just leave us in them instead of making us wear those horrible jumpsuits?

Have fun, pal.

And the reason is psychological warfare in my opinion. Let it sink in that you can't go home.

It makes me think this isn't so much a prison as maybe an experiment or something.

Definitely looks that way, doesn't it? Gather all the lab rats together, subject them to various tortures, see how they all react? Oh, and let's get a nice varied subsection of test subjects from all across time and space while we're at it!

And different dimensions as well.

Although the worst torture I've endured is trying to sleep through bad music

[Jack gives a sympathetic wince.] Ouch. That is torture. Rude neighbours, or was that the wardens?

Wardens. I found some music worth listening to though.

Oh dear. Is torture by warden music something I can expect on a regular basis, or was this just a one-off?

Nah. Someone requested it, or something. A mistake if I've ever seen one, requesting anything from a socially inept machine.

[Jack laughs, but then his eyes narrow thoughtfully.]

So they do make mistakes, then, these machines?

It was the mistake of the people requesting the music. So far? Looks like if you're not specific they're going to twist your words.

Still, could be useful to know. Sometimes it is possible to confuse these sorts of machines - at least into giving away important information, if nothing else.

Doesn't paradoxes confuse them? If you wanna try it after you get your clothes I'll meet ya there. I don't want you getting punished alone.

Hmm, sometimes. [He's still looking thoughtful, various ideas running through his head. But he shakes his head at the suggestion, with a light laugh.] Nah, no point two people getting punished instead of one! And I think I can handle anything they give out. Besides, I'd like to investigate a little more first, figure out more about what I'm dealing with here, if I can.

Yeah, that's certainly true.

Well, good talking to you, Duo, and thanks for all the information. I'll be in touch!
