Day 197 / Midday / Video
[Jack's been here a couple of hours. He spent the first hour disbelieving and furious, but wary of letting that show too much after his initial, instinctive bout of yelling – which he didn't broadcast, although sorely tempted to, because he's been kidnapped before and he doesn't want to get in too much trouble until he knows far better what he's up against. So he kept his head down and started exploring to get the lay of the land and find out what he had to work with here.

[And then he found the beach. He'd never lost his love of the sea from growing up beside an ocean, and he was out of the horrible orange jumpsuit and into the water before he'd even thought about it. Even if the waves and the sun on his back weren't quite natural, an hour or so of vigorous swimming calmed him down a lot. Enough to make his first transmission on the network with a decent amount of composure and a fair imitation of his normal cocky grin.

[He's still naked, by the way. It's kind of lucky (or maybe not, depending on your point of view) that the video doesn't extend below the waist. Not that Jack cares what you see. He's sprawled on the beach, the waves breaking gently behind him, feeling the sun on his tanned skin, and he's smiling. After all these years of practice, it's a pretty convincing smile.]

So. MarinaNova. [He rolls the name around his mouth, trying it out.] What've we got? Any hot babes here? Or hot guys – I'm really not picky. Maybe some Italian stud who actually looks good in orange? There'd better be something good to pass the time if I'm supposed to be here for the rest of my life!

[Not at all put-out]

I'm not actually sure it's a nude beach. I'm sure most people wear bathing costumes! Of course, there aren't any other people around, so I can't check that at the moment...

Oh -- I know it's not a nude beach. I was merely referring to the fact that I know there were nude beaches back at my world. And also the fact that there was once a beach party here where so many people went nude... It was a one time thing, or at least I thought it was.

Heh, where I grew up, everyone went nude. I didn't even know what swimwear was till I went off-world for the first time.

Oh, and they have nude beach parties here? This place is definitely looking up!

Ah, you're from one of those places. [He has no idea what he even means by that, but it sounded like a thing to say.] Like I said, it was just one time, and I've been here a really long time...

Oh, I am definitely from one of those places.

And aw, that's a shame. Maybe I'll have to throw another one while I'm here!

Go right on ahead...

[Palm to his face. Why did he have to say anything?!]

Not sure the wardens will be into it, but at this point, nothing surprises me.

Is it going to be a problem if they're not into it? I mean, how much do they shove their noses into day to day stuff here anyway?

[He shrugs.]

I honestly can't answer that question for you with this new punishment system in place. Some of the supposed "punishments" don't really seem like punishments at all, so even if you were to cause problems with... streaking at the beach, there's no guarantee that you'll have to pay serious consequences. So I guess go for it.

'New' punishment system? There used to be a different one?

Yeah. People can get different things now, some of which, as I mentioned, don't seem like punishments at all.

Sounds like we have the better deal now, then. What sort of thing are we talking then - for these new punishments?

I'm not sure of what they all are, but sometimes they include simple things like announcing the crime you've committed over the network and apologizing for it. [He nods.] I'm sure there are others more serious than that, but people don't talk about them.

[Jack's eyebrows go waaay up.] Seriously? That seems... incredibly banal as punishments go! Not exactly much of a deterrent.

Which, you know, is good!

Exactly!

[Hikaru rubs the back of his neck.]

I don't understand it, and I'm not sure I want to understand it. I can only hope that, should I ever do something stupid, that I'll get a punishment that's not too terrible!

Certainly sounds like terrible punishment wouldn't be too likely!

[He grins.] Do you have a tendency to do supid things?

[Oh what a question.

He responds after a moment of hesitation.]

... I do, actually. But not anything too horribly stupid so... it's not so bad.

[Jack chuckles.] So do I, actually. Let's hope those punishments stay mild, eh!

Captain Jack Harkness, by the way. And you are...?

[Hikaru laughs! That makes him feel better about his response!]

Ah, Hikaru Hitachiin! It's a pleasure making your acquaintance, Captain Jack Harness!

And you, Hikaru Hitachiin.
