Day 197 / Midday / Video
[Jack's been here a couple of hours. He spent the first hour disbelieving and furious, but wary of letting that show too much after his initial, instinctive bout of yelling – which he didn't broadcast, although sorely tempted to, because he's been kidnapped before and he doesn't want to get in too much trouble until he knows far better what he's up against. So he kept his head down and started exploring to get the lay of the land and find out what he had to work with here.

[And then he found the beach. He'd never lost his love of the sea from growing up beside an ocean, and he was out of the horrible orange jumpsuit and into the water before he'd even thought about it. Even if the waves and the sun on his back weren't quite natural, an hour or so of vigorous swimming calmed him down a lot. Enough to make his first transmission on the network with a decent amount of composure and a fair imitation of his normal cocky grin.

[He's still naked, by the way. It's kind of lucky (or maybe not, depending on your point of view) that the video doesn't extend below the waist. Not that Jack cares what you see. He's sprawled on the beach, the waves breaking gently behind him, feeling the sun on his tanned skin, and he's smiling. After all these years of practice, it's a pretty convincing smile.]

So. MarinaNova. [He rolls the name around his mouth, trying it out.] What've we got? Any hot babes here? Or hot guys – I'm really not picky. Maybe some Italian stud who actually looks good in orange? There'd better be something good to pass the time if I'm supposed to be here for the rest of my life!

[His attention is definitely piqued by the mention of shops.] Sector Two, eh? I hadn't made it further than One - obviously. [He waves a hand towards the sea behind him with small grin.]

Good to know there are alternative options for clothing, though - thanks! And everything's free, I take it, judging by the distinct lack of currency around here?

Yeah. It's kinda weird, but you can pretty much just walk into a store and take whatever you can carry.

Well, sounds like my kinda shopping!

...Not that I make a habit of shoplifting, because that makes it sound like I do.

Oh, at this point, does it really matter? You're already in prison for life.

[/lightly joking. Because humor is a fantastic defense mechanism.]

Actually, that's a really good point. Heh, well, yeah, in that case I guess they owe us a decent standard of goods and accommodation for free!

What's the accommodation like, by the way?

[Oh, isn't it? That's why he uses it all the time!]

Deceptively comfortable.

We get to stay in actual apartments, not prison cells. And we can even chose where we want to stay with whoever we want.

Good to know. I mean, I wish I could state with confidence that I won't be here long enough to need accommodation, but the fact there are so many people here who haven't managed to get out yet says it's not going to be that easy.

We've been working on it.

At one point, I was trying to see if I could duplicate the method they use to bring us all here. So far, no luck.

Yeah? You know a little about methods of temporal-spatial displacement?

[He holds his left wrist up into view, so she can see the wide leather wriststrap around it.] Used to have a way of travelling rather like that myself. Hasn't worked in a long while, though.

((OOC: And you get this icon because it's the only one I have in which you can really see the wriststrap...))

[To her credit, Zatanna actually does attempt to get a good look before dismissing it.]

Too high-tech for me. But if you're talking teleportation, there are other ways.

[info]foreverjack
2012-12-15 09:55 pm UTC (link)
Oh sure, all sorts of other ways.

[He cocks his head.] But what sort of thing are you talking about if this seems too high-tech. This is pretty basic tech, to my knowledge. There are far more refined ways of travelling.

As the Doctor drummed into him far too well.]

I'm sure there are. I even know somebody who might have a chance of knowing what you're talking about.

But my way doesn't exactly use technology. At all.

[And now she's lost him. He squints at the screen, utterly bemused.]

What, then, if not tech?

Magic.

[She doesn't expect him to believe her. She also doesn't care.]

[He doesn't exactly disbelieve her, but magic's not something he's come across as a reality before. On the other hand, he's incredibly open-minded and he's seen a hell of a lot of things he'd never have thought possible before, so...]

Okaaay. You mean, real magic? Incantations and eye of newt and that sort of thing?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]notbabymagic
2012-12-16 10:50 pm UTC (link)
I've been cutting back on the eye of newt, actually. Not really vegetarian-friendly.

But the rest, you've pretty much got it.

[info]foreverjack

[He chuckles.] Vegetarian magic. Now there's something you don't hear in conversation every day!

So this magic really works, then? Even for things like transportation?

[He is, actually, completely fascinated.]

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]notbabymagic
2012-12-17 10:50 pm UTC (link)
Usually, yeah.

But here, my powers are restricted. I can transport myself around the dome, but only maybe a mile or two at best. And something's keeping me from being able to use them to leave altogether.

[info]foreverjack

[He grimaces.] Seems like everything's restricted around here. I haven't even got half the functions on this thing-" [he taps his wriststrap] "-that I had back home.

Still, even short-range teleportation's gotta be useful! What else can you do?

[info]notbabymagic
2012-12-19 12:38 pm UTC (link)
Makes sense. They wouldn't want us to actually be able to leave or anything.

All kinds of stuff, really. As long as I know the spell for it.

Oh, yeah, god forbid!

[He sits up a bit, as if to lean forward in interest, forgetting that when he leans forward, so does the screen.] So, how does it work? I mean, what powers it?

[She calmly holds a hand up to her upper chest, indicating where her heart would be.]

Me.

It's something I was born with. Sort of like a really, really cool inheritance.

Really cool inheritance! [He cocks his head] So, does that mean that what you can do is limited by how much power your body has? Or am I taking it too literally?

Actually, you're pretty spot-on.

There've been a couple times where I've used up so much power, I'd konk out for something like half a day. Not very often...but it can be a thing..

Fascinating. You know, I've never come across a being who could do anything like that.

Are you from Earth?
