{ day 189 } action | open
[ a certain sulky murderer is still thoroughly dissatisfied with this whole "prison" arrangement. one would think he would have grown used to it, given that his life has been a life led in captivity for years anyway-- but he hasn't. the banality of this place, the stiflingly mundane atmosphere, is making him restless. the recent excitement hadn't been enough; he'd jumped at a chance to kill when it came to him days ago, and now he can't quite shake it-- that urge to kill, to crush with his hands or open someone up with a flash of cold steel.

perhaps an evening walk will do him some good.

it's been too long since he has heard any word from jessica, and thus he ventures into sector four. he moves through the place with the same calculated grace as always, never betraying the faint, impotent rage he feels at the thought that she might be gone. the idea that she might have slipped away without a word, without a trace, without a chance for him to see her face or hear her voice again, like odinson and rand-- atton, that smug fool who he had so dearly wished to hurt again-- is unacceptable. he is not accustomed to loss, and even though he knows he must accept that things have been taken from him and, in mentat fashion, carry on, he can't help but feel cheated. not mournful, not sorrowful, but hateful-- and he'd almost like to take a moment or an hour or perhaps the whole evening to submit to that anger.

so he does. he thinks extensively about it, analyzing that bitterness and rage as he stalks through the prison in whatever comfortable shadows he can find. he takes to wandering through sector four and quatro park at first, eventually ending up in the winery at some point in the night for a bit of light drinking, further sulking, and, of course, glaring at anyone who passes by.

[Piper was also walking through Sector Four. She was on her way back to the apartment after picking up some things for cooking. She had a lot of bags, actually. In fact, so many that, when she passed by Piter, one slipped and fell, spilling its contents at his feet.]

[ piter is absolutely unamused with this development, sidestepping to avoid the jumble of groceries. he slows to a stop a few paces away, turning to observe the mess with a small, derisive sneer. ]

Ah, how unfortunate.

Oh... sorry about that.

[And she crouched down, putting some of the bags down so she could start grabbing some of the items that had spilled, only to have one of the ones she put down tip over and spill out.]

Oh, crap.

[ he is definitely considering just walking away, but the entertainment that this little encounter is providing him with might just be worth it. clasping his hands behind his back, he makes absolutely no move to help. ]

Perhaps it would be prudent to carry less. [ it comes out as a perfectly innocent suggestion, for the amusement is expertly kept out of his voice-- but rest assured that the nasty jerk is chuckling internally. ]

Well, when you bake a lot, you tend to get a lot of supplies all at once. A cart would have made it easier, though, that's for sure.

[She glanced back over her shoulder.] Could you... maybe help a little? [She gave him a small smile.] Just need to get this stuff back in the bags and I'll be fine.

[Piper was trying to be pleasant despite her frustration at the situation.]

[ "help"? how very quaint. piter glances around, thinking that perhaps a bot might be somewhere nearby to take his place, but there do not appear to be any of those damnable thinking machines about. after a moment of consideration, he realizes that it might, in fact, be prudent to assist her. this is a less than ideal conflict to be embroiled in-- but in the end, he would rather interact with a bumbling human idiot than a minion of the wardens.

and so, with a small sigh, he takes a step forward and bends to daintily retrieve an item or two. how inconvenient false civility is.
]

Perhaps, then, it would be prudent to bake less.

Maybe. But, it's kind of my thing. [She didn't say anything, but she noticed his delicate handling and reluctant assistance. Still, she'd be polite.] I'm working on eventually opening a restaurant. [The nightclub back home was a stepping stone.]

[ his shoulders rise in a small, stiff shrug. why is she telling him this? he did not ask to hear of her dreams and aspirations. does he look like a counselor? nonetheless, he nods once. ]

A fair amount of establishments here are inmate run; I am sure you will encounter no trouble in that endeavor. [ a pause. ] Unless, of course, you have committed serious transgressions against the facility. [ there is a subtle note of humor in his voice-- he does truly wish that more people would severely inconvenience the wardens, given that they themselves are objectively the worst transgressions of all. ] Yet somehow I doubt such a thing.

That is wise, indeed. How long, may I ask, have you been here? [ though he doubts that what she has to say will be terribly enthralling, he can't help but be curious— for it's been a few days since he's sought to glean further information from more seasoned inmates. ]

[ that recaptures his attention, just a bit; he shakes his head in a calculated, stiff movement. ] I was not, though I arrived shortly after the transfer-- on the hundred and seventy-fifth day. [ a small, humorless chuckle escapes him. ] Time is ever unrelenting, is it not? As slowly as the days seem to pass, it has still not yet been a month.

[She nodded.] Yeah, they didn't wait on bringing in new people after dumping us in the new place.

But, you're right. I mean, it didn't help that the seasons were apparently all weird in the other place. I didn't see much of it, but I heard that they moved really fast, making for a very short year.

Well, fast in comparison for most versions of Earth, anyway.

[ he scowls and folds his arms across his chest in a fluid, graceful motion-- though not without a faint air of irritation, directed more at the matter of the prison as a whole than at piper. ] My assumption is that they mean to disorient prisoners, given that the vast majority do appear to be from that ancient planet. You are no exception, I presume.

[ piter himself has ended up choosing to drink very little, deciding instead to substitute public tipsiness for peasantpeople-watching and a bit of private drug abuse upon returning to his apartment and its comfortable (though rather meager) spice stockpile. one must always practice self-care. in any case, he's still parked himself in one of the shadier corners of the bar, sitting up straight with hands folded neatly beside an empty shotglass, refills of which he has denied twice now.

after growing rather weary of enduring his mind's sulky genius douchebrain shenanigans, he turns minutely to take a brief inventory of the other patrons. people-watching, he has found, is actually not terribly stimulating at all in such mundane surroundings-- but out of the meandering stragglers, he recalls seven's face and its peculiar features immediately. perhaps she will catch his whiteless eyes watching her, but in the interest of quiet study he will not yet deign to say a word.

[ he quite likes that bluntness-- ultimately, such a direct declaration is preferable to the hours of staring and sneering that he has endured before, always coupled with the eventual simpering inquiry as to whether or not he is of arrakeen stock. what's more, there is always that hidden, derisive, sour connotation to the question, meant to shame him for his addiction, his savagery-- though he refuses to feel shame. irritation, perhaps, that daft strangers should feel the need to belittle a mentat that could kill them in a thousand different ways, but never shame.

a smile stretches across his lips.

[Lacus makes it a habit to stop by the Winery regularly, as it's a place people tend to congregate and a place people go when they need solace. She gives no thought that those people might prefer to seek it alone, however.]

[ he chuckles softly, darkly-- none of the shrill, unhinged laughter she must have heard in that stupid, senseless broadcast-- before replying. ]

I did indeed, at a small cost. [ that would, of course, be his dignity, as well as the few milliliters of venom he deigned to allow bruce. mostly, he is just bitterly dissatisfied with how much gigging he did that evening. he does not like giggling. it is not conducive to people fearing him. ]

Terribly interesting beasts... with a most potent brand of venom. [ and the cannister he is now keeping in his apartment is the closest thing he has to a child. such a precious baby! ] I should rather like to study its effects further. Lacus, my dear, do you know of any others unfortunate enough to meet their fellow inmates' stingers?

A few. [She watches him carefully, but shows no reaction other than sanguine.] It seems to have been an experience that felt better in the moment than in the aftermath.

Did you learn anything of them, aside from the effects of a sting? [She's curious about their new dome-mates, and also about Piter's definition of interesting.]

[ and that elicits another singular chuckle. ] It is the disposition of a Mentat to never be entirely out of his mind, and so I mercifully retained a few infrequent spells of clarity throughout the night. Uncontrollable laughter, I have found, is extremely inconvenient.

Ah, but I've not yet had a suitable avenue to study the venom-- though Banner, I presume, will be conducting tests as well at some point. We did learn, at least, much of the creatures' internal components.

I suppose one such as yourself would consider it to be so, but I do not know any other life. It isn't a joyless one-- my whims are merely rather few and far between. [ that's not entirely true-- he used to be able to conduct himself as he pleased, but now... well. thanks for making his life even more difficult, marina. nonetheless, he smiles a small, sweet smile that would never betray the fact that behind it, he is thinking about murder and torture and drug abuse. lovely, healthy whims, all of them. ]

[ a little mangled by his accent, he pronounces it more like "franzh," for that is how it's come to be known in his time, but he seems rather pleased. ] Learning a language is quite relaxing, I find.
