[Dawn has actually been in Sector Zero for about an hour and a half. She’s been combing through all the information provided on the headset unit. She’s had time to decide that this isn’t some wacky dream her subconscious has cooked up for her. Seeing all the people walking around her, all the detail in everything around her, she even pinched herself a few times. Nope, not a dream.

She flips on the video feed.] Hi MarinaNova Asylum… well, score one for the age of technology, I guess. And hey, I guess I didn’t actually have to study for that impending college algebra test of doom that was supposed to take place tomorrow morning. Time wasted that I’ll never get back. Like, who needs college algebra except for accounting or math-type majors anyway, right? If you graduated high school, don’t you already know all the math of the basic and necessary to everyday life?

[Her rambling ends there and she grows a little more serious, pulling her lip through her teeth. She is trying so hard to put on a brave face and not freak out.] So uhm… I’m looking for someone named Buffy. Short, blonde, usually has really nice shoes and maybe a pointy stick in her hand? [She presses her lips together, stopping herself before she can go on. If Buffy’s here, then everything is going to be okay. That’s what she knows as truth right now. And if Buffy isn’t here, well she’s on the verge of a break down in which there will be many tears and much freaking out.]

[This is relief. Just the sound of Buffy's voice and seeing her on a video screen, it's enough for all the relief. If Buffy's here, things aren't so bad as she might let herself believe they are.]

Buffy. [Deep breath.] We're in prison and this is totally not a cool thing cause... I mean we had to do all that stuff to save the world. It's not like we're really terrorists. I thought the Government was all reprieve-y and stuff. Plus whoever heard of this ocean we're under. I think they had to have gotten it wrong. Right?

[Long pause.] Right?

[Dawn is totally not making sense right now and it's only now that Buffy realizes Dawn said something about college algebra, which is a class Buffy is fairly sure she's not able to take while they're...immediately post cratering Sunnydale, which means Dawn is....older, from the future and going to college like a normal girl. That makes Buffy happier than she realized it would.]

Right. I mean...right. They--have no idea what they're doing by keeping us here, but they kind of are a lot of not caring. Where are you, Dawnie?

Well there's this neat-o map that's all useful that says I'm in Sector Zero. Which is in the middle of everything. And please no jokes about me always being in the middle of all the trouble cause I think I'm about to cry.

[Her voice gets tighter and tighter with every word as she's trying not to cry.]

Xander doesn't remember. [And that is one thing gone wrong too many at the moment.] I think there's a spell.

[Buffy recognizes that tone of voice. She knows what it means even if Dawn's words make no sense.]

Hey, I'm gonna be there in a couple of seconds. We'll figure it out when I get there, right?

[And because she's running, she is there in a few seconds, slowing down so that she doesn't knock Dawn off her feet when she wraps her up in a hug.]

It's okay, Dawnie. I'm here.

[She knows that doesn't literally make things okay, but it's comforting and familiar and hopefully make the both of them feel better.]

[Dawn melts into that Buffy hug like it was necessary to her very existence. She can't help the way she clings either. Or the way the tears she has been holding back finally spill from her eyes. She'd had it all under control until there was a Buffy. Her being here meant that yes, things would be okay. But it also meant that it was okay for her not to be okay right now.]

I'm not okay. [She whispers through the tightness in her throat since her voice seems to be momentarily absent. And sorry Buffy, your hair is soaking up her tears.]

Xander doesn't remember being with me. I mean... he never was. [She draws in a shaky breath, her hands gripping Buffy's shirt tight for the moment as she tries desperately to stop being so ridiculous about not having her steady rock of a boyfriend here, but also having him here.

Maybe just a few more seconds of holding onto her sister will help.] It just hurts. He's supposed to love me.

[While Dawn is holding onto Buffy trying not to fall apart, Buffy is reeling from the news that her little sister and Xander were dating, and apparently in love. It doesn't show on the outside though. She runs her hands up and down Dawn's back comfortingly]

He loves you, Dawnie. He just hasn't gotten to that yet. Xander has always loved you. Give him a little time to...absorb and get there.

[She's not sure how she feels about Xander dating her sister, but she knows exactly how she feels about Dawn crying, and it's not good.]

I just didn't expect... [Expect what? Being thrown into an underwater prison where her best friend and boyfriend still thinks she's a little girl and doesn't even remember kissing her?] I made a fool of myself, that's all.

[And quietly to herself.] Suck it up, Dawn...

[A deep, shaky breath and she pulls back and wipes at her eyes and cheeks to look at her sister.] But speaking of prison, which was spoken of in my head, you look really good for being a felon. I look like a felon. But I'm really glad you're a felon too.

[She's pretty sure she did make a fool of herself in front of Xander. She's pretty sure she did it while wearing a bright orange prison jumpsuit. But she's trying to prioritize here so she keeps that argument to herself. That doesn't mean she's okay about it. And she definitely still looks like the wind has been knocked out of her sails. She's not okay with this.]

So what's the what? Underwater prison run by AI's. Is it Warren? I mean, like, did he do some kind of craziness to make this place happen?
