[Action/Closed | Voice/Open]
[ Action 1 | Closed to Jane Crocker ]

[ So Dirk has to bake something for the other inmates. He would just blow it off, but he needs to get some practice in anyway. Cooking is something he intends to get better at.

So he's asked for Jane's help, and on the morning of Day 187 he stands in the kitchen of their apartment, surrounded by the materials necessary for making cookies, wearing a frilly pink apron. ]

[ Voice | Open ]

Hey, just a heads-up: My broke-ass headset's not translating anything today as part of some bullshit punishment for defending myself against a bunch of giant wasps. So if you don't speak English, Japanese, Urdu, Pashto, Farsi, Tagalog, or Lojban, don't bother trying to get in touch with me until tomorrow.

[ There's not very much to do when you live in the future. ]

Second, I made a bunch of cookies. Another punishment thing. I've planted them in random locations around the dome. Good luck.

[ They can be found basically anywhere: In the pockets of clothes in The Row, in drawers in empty apartments, on the learning modules in the Education Center. If you can think of a completely ridiculous location, there is a cookie there.

They taste awful. There's a reason he made them available for general consumption instead of just giving them to his housemates. ]

[ Action 2 | Closed to housemates ]

[ After going around finding stupid hiding places for the cookies, Dirk returns to their apartment.

He sighs. He's... exhausted. He hasn't slept for days, and after the wasps and the. Everything. He could just really use some sleep. But he has to keep going for three more days.

Fuck, why did he suggest this? ]

A little. All that baking made me hungry.

[ Out into the kitchen he goes. Oh, hey. There's box of anti-fever medicine on the counter. ]

Guess Crocker kept good on her word. Get me some water.

Uh, sure, Dirk.

[He grabs a glass and pours him some nice filtered water. When he hands Dirk the glass, he tries to peer at the medicine.]

[ He turns the box to show it to Jake, catching sight of the "non-drowsy" indicator on it. Good Jane, best friend. ]

I sort of have a fever, nothing serious.

[Jake blinks, thinks it over.]

I might be wrong, but...I believe that is a very bad thing.

It could be if I let it get any worse. [ That's as much as he'll admit. He glances over with a mischievous grin, though there's still a hint of tiredness there. ] Are you worried? I'm so touched.

[ After reading the dosage instructions, he pops a couple of pills out of the container and into his mouth, downing the water soon after.

What he doesn't know is that Jane went and switched the bottle's contents with a drowsiness-inducing variant. Same dosage so he won't be in any trouble, but he's about to lose this bet hard. ]

Of course I'm worried, Dirk, especially if it got any worse.

[A huff. And then a grin. As worried as he is, he's still got a bet to maintain.]

So I suppose if you just stay really still... perhaps enough to doze off? Maybe even sleep?

[ He scoffs. ]

You sure are desperate to see me pass out. What exactly do you plan to do to my nubile, helpless body?

Perhaps take a few snapshots or draw on your face with permanent marker? The possibilities are nigh endless, Strider!

We'll just see about that.

Weren't you gonna subject me to some alien filmography, English? [ Yawwwwwn. He's suddenly... very very tired. ]

Right o! This way- I've got it all set up for us.

[He happily leads the way to the living room.]

[ He follows, blinking rapidly beneath his shades. Wow. His eyelids are so heavy. No, no, he's on a roll, he can do this. ]

[Jake is oblivious for now as he sets the bowl of popcorn on the coffee table closer to the couch and moves quickly to put the DVD in the DVD player and grab the remote and position all the cushions and blankets and oh god it is JUST LIKE THE MOVIE NIGHTS HE SEES IN MOVIES. He seems pretty proud of himself as he flops down on the couch, patting the seat next to him for Dirk.]

This title's long as anything I've ever seen, so I don't really know what to expect! But it looks like a doozy, I'll tell you that much.

[ He sits, arms folded behind his head and feet up on the table all coolkid-like. If he focuses on the film, he should be able to recover. Right. He takes a deep breath. ]

Every movie's a doozy to you. But I'm pretty excited to see what's in store.

As you should be.

[He hits play and settles, pulling one end of the blanket around his shoulder as the previews play. He doesn't skip them because they look interesting.]

[ Dirk doesn't complain. Watching advertisements is as important a part of cultural analysis as watching the actual films themselves.

He shifts, folds his arms over his chest and leans forward to try and concentrate better, but his attention is wandering. He's so far gone that he doesn't even notice that he can't understand the language the film is in. ]

[Jake pulls up the bowl of popcorn, setting it between them and eating quite happily. The movie begins to start. JAKE IS NOW IMMERSED. YOUR JAKE IS IN ANOTHER WORLD, DIRK.]

[ Dirk is going strong! Even if he has to close his eyes because of how blurry everything's getting. He's... just resting them. Right.

Right.

About ten minutes in, Dirk slumps sideways onto Jake's arm, completely unaware of doing so.

English: 1, Strider: 0. ]

[Jake is startled from the movie when a warm weight settles on his arm. He looks down to see a mass of fluffy hair, the point of dark sunglasses. What makes him smile is the sound of steady breathing and the equally steady rise and fall of Dirk's angular shoulders.

It takes some maneuvering, but Jake eventually manages to pull the other end of the blanket around Dirk. He settles against the back of the couch, careful not to nudge Dirk around, and watches the rest of the movie in silence.]
