[Action/Closed | Voice/Open]
[ Action 1 | Closed to Jane Crocker ]

[ So Dirk has to bake something for the other inmates. He would just blow it off, but he needs to get some practice in anyway. Cooking is something he intends to get better at.

So he's asked for Jane's help, and on the morning of Day 187 he stands in the kitchen of their apartment, surrounded by the materials necessary for making cookies, wearing a frilly pink apron. ]

[ Voice | Open ]

Hey, just a heads-up: My broke-ass headset's not translating anything today as part of some bullshit punishment for defending myself against a bunch of giant wasps. So if you don't speak English, Japanese, Urdu, Pashto, Farsi, Tagalog, or Lojban, don't bother trying to get in touch with me until tomorrow.

[ There's not very much to do when you live in the future. ]

Second, I made a bunch of cookies. Another punishment thing. I've planted them in random locations around the dome. Good luck.

[ They can be found basically anywhere: In the pockets of clothes in The Row, in drawers in empty apartments, on the learning modules in the Education Center. If you can think of a completely ridiculous location, there is a cookie there.

They taste awful. There's a reason he made them available for general consumption instead of just giving them to his housemates. ]

[ Action 2 | Closed to housemates ]

[ After going around finding stupid hiding places for the cookies, Dirk returns to their apartment.

He sighs. He's... exhausted. He hasn't slept for days, and after the wasps and the. Everything. He could just really use some sleep. But he has to keep going for three more days.

Fuck, why did he suggest this? ]

[ He follows her instructions, measuring the ingredients out very precisely, and mixes them together in the bowl.

He's also forgetting that this morning, in a sleepy haze, he'd come in and switched the labels on the bags of white sugar and salt. At the time it had seemed like the most hilarious thing ever. ]

Now take two eggs and beat them into your mix slowly, and after that add 2 dashes of vanilla extract.

[Hm the oven smells funny......]

[ He grabs one, and just as he's about to crack it open he remembers.

Shit. Shit shit shit.

He drops the egg on the floor, stuffs his hand into an oven mitt, and pulls the oven door open to grab the wooden sword. ]

Dirk!

[Dear mother of jesus, oh my god what the heck.]

Dirk, I'm going to assume that was yours or Dave's. Those don't belong in the oven!

There was no room in the fridge!

[ He drops it in the sink and turns on the cold water.

The sword cracks. ]

Fuck.

[She runs her hand across his back in a soothing gesture. She knows he won't be able to get another one upon request. She can't get one for him either.]

Why would you want it in there?

[She puts the back of her hand to his forehead.]

Are you sure you're okay?

Needed a place to put it.

I'm fine, Jane. Just... a little worn out, that's all.

[ His forehead is kind of warm. ]

Go lie down after we finish, okay? You feel a little warm. Have you slept?

[She is so worried jesus christ.]

I'm fine. Let's just bake these little assholes.

After we bake, I'm going to run and get you something for that warm forehead of yours. Alright?

[She's just worried, so worried. Always worried.]

Just get to the eggs and vanilla- alright?

...sure, okay. Thanks, Crocker. [ If that will make her stop worrying.

He cleans up the egg on the floor, then gets to work properly adding the eggs and vanilla extract. Stir stir stir. ]

Take your baking soda, and get two tablespoons of hot water. Melt the baking soda in the water and then add to your mixture. Then get a pinch of salt and put it in.

[She will feel indefinitely better.]

Now all you need to do is add three cups of flour, and your chocolate chips and they're ready to bake!

Uh. [ He processes those instructions. He moves slowly and deliberately, and is able to pull that off without spilling anything or tripping over his own two feet. See, Jane? He's a great baking protege! ]

Okay. Now what's the most optimal manner of cookie sheet arrangement?

There isn't a special arrangement on the cookie sheet. Just evenly space the. And they should be done in about fifteen minutes. Please don't let them burn, I can stick around and taste them if you like.

[She presses her hand to his forehead again.]

Would you like non-drowsy?

[ He gets to work, making them nice and flat and round. Maybe too flat. They'll probably burn.

He fidgets at her hand on his forehead. ]

If you'd be so kind.

[All this activity and the lack of sleep are grounds for a rising fever. Dirk, you should know better.]

Of course. I'll be glad to do that for you. Just as long as you promise to actually take them.
