day 184 :: action / voice :: open
[In Sector 0 stands a formidable man who despite his age is in excellent health and despite the anonymity of the orange jumpsuit still exudes leadership, wit, intelligence and demands respect without his even saying a word. He isn’t in a hurry to get anywhere. Clothing is unimportant as long as he has some. Food isn’t an immediate necessity.

He stands there calmly, taking in his surroundings as he absorbs and attempts to understand all the information he has been given. Anyone passing by is free to notice him. However, having little to no trouble deciphering the technology of the headset unit, he does finally speak over the network.

His voice is calm, but not without purpose.
] I’m Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the U.S.S. Enterprise. It seems that I’ve been taken from my ship and... imprisoned here with the rest of you. As we all seem to find ourselves in a similar situation, I hoped a number of you might find the time to answer a number of questions.

First. Under whose authority do Veridical and Conscienti imprison their inmates in MarinaNova Asylum?

Second, on what planet does the Saylar Ocean exist?

Third, and I suppose last but not least for now, what is the approximate length of time in which one remains here within the dome for this… decidedly contrived attempt at rehabilitation?

[There is a pause here, as he considers whether or not to tack on another question here. There are just so many things to ask and Jean-Luc is known for being too curious for his own good. Finally, he decides against it.] Any explanation to any of these questions would be of great help. Thank you.

Then call me determined and willful. Also just Buffy is fine.

[She thinks about it a moment.] A few months. It's sort of easy to lose track of time here unless you literally mark the days on a wall.

Yes, according to this map there are quite a few things that could keep a person busy. I must say, it more resembles a small town than a prison... all the comforts a person could want aside from the one comfort that is right, freedom.

It's definitely very small townish. It might sound bad, but sometimes it's easy to forget that you're not allowed to leave and then it just hits you some days.

Oh no, not bad at all. In fact, it's understandable to say the least. It's one of the great attributes of humanity, the ability to adapt. Of course for some it may be easier than others. For another great attribute of humanity is stubbornness, the unwillingness to give up hope for a better future. And hope will most certainly get a person, or a people, far.

I kind of think it depends on how things are going here and what's happening at home, who you've left and who's still here, you know?

Yes, as with most things, it is indeed circumstantial. Perhaps ironic considering the lack of circumstance involved in the judgement handed down by our captors.

It's weird though. Most of us came from very different circumstances back home. It's like they're just randomly gathering people.

Circumstances, worlds and times, it would seem. Someone even went so far as to mention alternate realities. But as positronic beings such as those who brought us here are logical thinkers, as is evidenced through their black and white views on the supposed crimes we have committed, I would lean on the side of their having a purpose in each prisoner rather than random selection. And if we are randomly selected, there must still be a certain amount of logic to it… It is indeed curious, Buffy.

Alternate realities are a go from what I've heard. I think they've got a purpose but I don't know if it's by prisoner or if it's an overall purpose. Personally I think they're Pinky and the Brain-ing it.

You know:

"What are we going to do tonight, Brain?"

"The same thing we do every night, Pinky. Try to take over the world"

I'd throw in an evil laugh but I don't think it'd help your understanding.

No I... don't believe I've ever heard of such a thing. I'm assuming it's from the past... a book perhaps?

Cartoon called Pinky and the Brain. It's about two mice that try to take over the world. Pinky is stupid and the Brain is an evil genius.

[For a normally very verbose man, Jean-Luc is suddenly at a loss for words. Give him a bit. A little bit more. Annnnd a little bit more.]

Ah. Television. [This is him trying to retain some of his dignity in this conversation.]

[Score one for the cheerleader turned slayer from California.]

Little box you turn on. People talk inside it. It comes in color now too.

[She adores you Jean-Luc. You now remind her of Giles.]

Yes, a form of entertainment that didn't last much beyond the twenty first century.

[Take that in your pipe and smoke it, Buffy. TV eventually dies out. Oh the irony.]

There are several museums at home that actually do have old televisions in them. I must say that I can understand the appeal, somewhat like getting lost in a good book or holonovel.

Holonovels? What's that?

[Hey, if she knew about holodecks, she would totally understand why tv got left by the wayside.]

Holonovels are a method of becoming a part of the story. You would program say, the early eighteen-hundreds, dress the part and step into that world. The technology is quite ingenious, really.

Okay, well that would be cool. I can totally see why they replaced TV. Can you get out anytime you want?

Right. It can pause at any point or skip ahead or backward. You can change any of the parameters of the story to suit your mood. I'm certain anyone would have to try very hard to not find some form of entertainment on a holodeck. What world would you choose?

[Buffy wrinkles her nose a bit at that.] Something normal, I think. With really fantastic clothes. You?
