Tanner had just returned home after a very busy day at the Greenbriar Inn; he had worked the breakfast and lunch shifts and would have stayed for the dinner shift if they would have let him. He worked hard, was a friendly, helpful waiter and, truth be told, easy on the eyes, so he did very well on tips. He smiled widely when he handed the day’s tips over to his mother; she tried to give him some back, but he refused it.
“You had a phone call from that nice Dean Alden, Tanny”, his mom informed him, as she tucked the tip money away in their little safebox.
“Dean Alden, Mom? What did he want?”, Tanner asked, half worried and half excited.
RIIIIINNNNGGGGGGGGG!
Tanner turned and picked up the telephone, “Hello? Dean Alden? That’s amazing, sir, we were just talking about you”. The boy listened as the amazing man on the other end of the phone altered the offer he’d made earlier. The Dean didn’t want to wait until a few days before the semester began, he wanted Tanner to come up to New Hampshire now…tonight. Maryland wasn’t on the other side of the world from New Hampshire or anything, but it also wasn’t just around the corner. Tanner wondered, at this hour, how he’d get there tonight.
“Tanny! Tanny! A helicopter!!”, Tyler yelled as he burst through the door.
Dean Alden had promised to support Tanner’s family while he was away; the boy really didn’t know what to make of that. He wondered what made him so special and why the Dean cared so much.
Though his mother and family would miss him terribly, his mother insisted he go and make the most of any opportunity that was offered to him. So, Tanner threw a few things in a bag and hurried out to the helicopter that was sent for him. Tanner smiled, thinking how confident the Dean was to send the helicopter before getting his answer.
In no time at all, it seemed, the helicopter was landing on a pad on the Alden University campus. “I’ll show you to your room, so you can settle in and later, the Dean would like to meet with you”. The man, who had flown the helicopter, led Tanner to a building with the crest of a fantastical seahorse on it, “You will be in House Shae, because your sunsign is Cancer”, he informed Tanner.
When they got to his room, he was stunned by the size of it and the quality of it’s adornments. He walked around, checking everything out, when he heard someone enter.
