Jia Li Adlar sat in the grass, her back leaning gently against a beautiful, strong tree. Her knees were propped up in front of her, making a decent stand for the textbook that was propped against her thighs. The weather was perfect for this kind of studying. The air was warm, and the sky was sunny with a few clouds filtering the light.
The book in her lap was for her environmental science class. She needed a science course for her generals anyway, but she hadn’t taken it last year. The subject matter was incredibly interesting to her, but she was having a difficult time concentrating. It wasn’t too big a deal because the class was on Friday’s; she just liked to get her homework done as early as possible.
The reason she felt distracted wasn’t because of the birds singing their merry songs. It had nothing to do with the warm sun absorbing into her naturally tanned skin. It wasn’t even the beautiful life-force of the tree pulsating against her back. No, today her thoughts trailed again and again to an infuriating encounter she had had a couple of weeks ago with a guy whose name she didn’t even know. Of course, he also didn’t know hers, but he had been content to make one up for her anyway: Susie – Susie Squirrel.
Just the thought of it made her cringe. She definitely wasn’t a Susie, and she didn’t really have much to do with squirrels, either, unless it meant defending them against pricks who thought it was fun to torment them.
Jia Li had done a pretty good job of forgetting about him after the first two days of steaming, but if she was anything, the dryad was a dweller. This meant that if something happened, she dwelled on it to the point of insanity. She would just think and rethink it until she wasn’t sure she even had what really happened straight. She would think of different scenarios. Things she wished she’d said or things she could have done.
Okay, so maybe she dwelled on it for a good four days, but after that, she’d been fine until last night when she’d had a dream about him. The worst part was that she couldn’t even remember anything about the dream except for the fact that that guy had been there. She vaguely remembered not feeling angry at him and noticing that he was actually pretty damned good looking when he wasn’t being a dick, but other than that, nothing. Now, she couldn’t get the bastard and how he’d reallyacted toward her from her head.
Every time she thought of the mean things he’d said to her, her cheeks flushed, and her heart pounded as if she were hearing it all for the first time even though it was just in her head. She thought of the things she should have said, the things she should have done. The dryad shouldn’t have smiled at all at his wise-cracks. She should have stood her ground! How was it that he had been the one scaring the crap out of a defenseless squirrel, and he had managed to make her feel like the bad guy for calling him on it?
Maybe she should try to find him? Maybe she should just apologize? She wasn’t sorry she’d defended the squirrel. What he’d done was wrong. However, she had been rude to him, and maybe that deserved some sort of apology. Maybe if she apologized, he would suck up his assholery and be nice to her? Surely it would throw him off guard if she was nice. Didn’t kindness deserve kindness in return?
Oh, no. That wouldn’t work. It made her seem vulnerable. Besides, he would probably react like she’d accepted him as her king or something. Then she’d never heard the end of it whenever she saw him. He would probably treat her like she was nothing more than a lowly serf, like she should bow at his feet or be grateful if he wanted to take her to his bed. Jia Li shook her head and scoffed disgustedly.
Maybe instead of playing nice, she should have been extra mean. She hadn’t really been that cruel toward him while he was busy bashing her. Maybe what she really should have done was laugh right in his face. It wouldn’t have been an amused laugh but one of those really condescending, mocking laughs. That definitely would have caught him off guard. It would have made him feel like an idiot. He would have frowned and stumbled over himself as he tries to get away from her.
A smile of satisfaction momentarily flitted over her lips. Yes. That was exactly what she would do next time she saw him. It would make her seem confident, and he wouldn’t be able to walk all over her.
The smile evaporated from her lips. What if it didn’t work? What if he was just such a cocky jackass that he just found something new about which to laugh at her? He would probably make fun of her laugh or say she had a stupid look on her face.
Ugh! Even in her head, she couldn’t win against him, and her blood was boiling just thinking about it.
I just won’t think about him… Jia Li thought with determination as she tried even harder to concentrate on the scientific explanations in her book.
