It was a novel experience, living alone, Anton thought. Kind of exhilarating, but a little scary, too which, at seventeen, he was not prepared to admit to anyone but himself. He had never in his life been so far away from his mother. It had been hard sometimes to live with her, to bear the burden and the stigma of her instability, but she had been a constant in his life, and he loved her. Now, he was in another state entirely and totally on his own.
Anton didn't regret his choice to come to Alden - not if they truly could help him - and he had to believe that they could. If not them, who? Doctors, psychologists, priests... they'd all tried and failed. Before coming here, Anton hadn't thought it would really be possible to continue his education. Part of him still wasn't sure, but he was hopeful at least, which he hadn't been in a long time. He wondered if there were many people here like him: "special needs" students that the regular system couldn't cope with. Alden had a special reputation, but that was all he knew. Administration was aware of his condition. They had to be. He couldn't hide the fact that he was on antipsychotics while living in residence; they had provided him with a small locker for his medication for safety reasons. Of course, he hadn't told them everything - he hadn't told anyone everything - but he hoped that his time here would teach him strategies to make up for where his medication left off and keep away the headaches, keep the pictures out of his head.
Anton didn't have much in the way of luggage, just a small wheeled suitcase that rolled behind him at a sedate pace with a little squeaking complaint. It had been his mother's and had "St. Mary of the Springs" written on the side in permanent black marker. Inside, he had clothes, toiletries, and all the money he had in the world which wasn't much. He followed the signs to the Arvandor Residence which wasn't hard to find. He had a map which he didn't need to consult on which was also written his floor and room number. The dorm was co-ed, but separated by floor into male and female. He saw a few students, girls and boys both, lounging about or studying in the common area, but he didn't approach. He only edged his way quietly towards the stairs, not wanting to draw any attention. The squeak-squeak of his suitcase wheels mercifully drew no interest.
Climbing the stairs quickly, Anton fished for the room key in his pocket. It went smoothly into the lock, but he was surprised when there was no resistance when he turned it. The door was unlocked. Anton went inside, but hesistated in the doorway. The room showed obvious signs of occupation; there were dishes in the kitchen sink, a pair of boots by the door. "... Hello?" Anton called out uncertainly. He checked the number on the door again against the one on his map. He was very sure he had the right room, but it had never occured to him before now that he might not be alone. Immediately, the very uncomfortable and unwelcome prospect of sharing close space with a total stranger presented itself and had Anton looking around anxiously for some sign of that other body.
