Ani shut his chemistry textbook with dramatic fashion. He didn’t hate chemistry in the slightest, in fact he usually loved equations, in all their forms – so neat and ordered with definite solutions he could puzzle out, why couldn’t the world be more like that? But he was still a boy of thirteen and there came a point when even his brain needed different stimuli.

Thankfully, that was his last bit of homework.

“I’m done with my homework, Master. Can I go find Helena?”

	Obi-Wan frowned. "Of course I don't need to check it. I'm just surprised by how much disparity there is in the amount of work they give you day to day. It's terribly inconsistent." "You go to the same two places in the same order every week." He didn't appreciate your condescension, Ani. "Their routines don't seem very routine." By Jedi standards, anyway.

He took a breath, then looked at Ani for a moment and decided to broach the easier topic first.

"At Helena's birthday party, the women were talking about a future event they claim you'll be involved in. They said you and Helena will cause an explosion that destroys the old defence tower."

	Ani was beginning to think Master Obi-Wan didn’t like his schooling very much. He filed that away for later, because the next thing Obi-Wan said pulled him up short. “Oh,” his eyes went wide. 	Confusion set in for Ani, Obi-Wan wasn’t saying anything he didn’t already know. “Um, yes.” He nodded. “I know that.” He didn’t quite understand Obi-Wan’s concern in this. 	The pencil stopped moving. He didn’t think Obi-Wan would have an adverse reaction to the acquisition of knowledge. “Just… to… know… how we did it?” And then he added again, because he thought maybe Master Obi-Wan hadn’t heard the first part. “We don’t want to blow it up.” (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Ani narrowed his eyes. “I know how a lightsaber converts energy to plasma. I know what chain reaction sets off a photon torpedo. I know the mechanisms of a thermal detonator. I know how blasters fire. I’m not doing anything wrong knowing how those things work and I’m not experimenting with those.”

He crossed his arms, looking wounded. “You don’t trust me?”

This sure felt like he was being scolded for only possessing curiosity, and that felt like Obi-Wan didn’t trust him. “I’ve been getting all my homework done and doing whatever training you give me. Ani’s mouth dropped slightly. He hadn’t meant it to sound like that; he had just wanted to show he was keeping his word, like he said he would.

The answer was - it was fun to attempt to figure it out, playing these guessing games with Helena where they could suggest the most egregious possibility and work their way back from the end and disprove the theory. It was a puzzle, their puzzle to understand. Because it was silly.

But now thinking it through under his Master’s scrutiny it sounded foolish, and he felt foolish, like he was wrong for exercising deductive reasoning skills in this manner. And anyway he explained it would just sound ridiculous. Jedi didn’t have fun, even in their personal time.

“We just want to know what happens. That’s all,” he said.

	He nodded. "All right. Fair enough." He had a feeling there was more to it than that, but Ani was becoming defensive and that wasn't productive. "But no experiments, right?" he added as his final caveat. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

	Ani wanted to ask if that meant not even scaled models and tests done on material similar to the tower but done away from the tower. But he already felt defeated and didn’t want any more censure. “Fine… Are we done now?” (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Obi-Wan felt distinctly like he'd damaged relations over a subject that they should have been in agreement on. But he didn't know what to do about that. He sank further back in his seat.

"About that: yes. But there's one more thing I want to talk to you about." He ran a hand over his face. If this was going to go as well as that did, he wasn't sure he could go through with it. But he'd promised he would.

"Well there is some history there that you're perhaps not aware of." He could still feel Ani's frustration with him and it made him even more nervous and hesitant. He tried to shove it down as he continued. "Many years ago, during a mission, while we were padawans, she and I... became aware that we were harbouring feelings of attachment for each other." He watched Anakin's face carefully, gauging his reaction.
