Who: Anakin Sr. and Obi-Wan
What: Discussing confusing things
When: Sunday afternoon
Where: The Workroom (the room Anakin uses for all his electronic projects)
Rating/Warnings: Probably low – they might argue, these two always have something to argue about
Status: In progress/Closed

“Slow the spin by ten seconds, Artoo,” Anakin commanded the droid at his side, he was borrowing the droid from Ani for the afternoon. A holoprojected schematic of a component to one of Anakin’s latest projects was suspended in the air in front of them. The cylindrical object spun on a tilted axis.

They were in The Workroom – the set of quarters on the fourth floor Anakin had been granted sole use of for all his electronic, mechanical tinkerings. Because Padmé forbid raw parts and pieces in her quarters. Something about not wanting to get a sharp wire end stuck in her bare feet. Anakin couldn’t argue with that.

The room was in its usual state of chaotic disarray. Or at least it appeared that way to someone not attuned to the Force. Almost every surface was covered with Anakin-crafted hunks of metal junk or actual working parts (it was hard to tell). And piles littered the floor. It was a sight reminiscent of his early childhood home.

But there was more to the room than this gathering of crude matter. In the Force the room felt positively peaceful. This, too, was Anakin created. A sensation not often connected with Anakin. And yet, as incongruous as that seemed, it couldn’t be denied.

“Another ten seconds,” he instructed the droid again, his head tipped to the side so he could study the image as it rotated.

Movement at the open door pulled his attention and he looked up. He’d felt Obi-Wan approaching the moment the man heading in the direction of this room.

“You can come in,” he said to his former Master. As if he would tell him to go away.

They sat without speaking for a while, the peacefulness of the room permeating the shared silence. Anakin reached over to a pile of random parts and picked one out to tinker with. Sitting still was on feat, sitting still not talking was something else altogether Anakin wasn’t very comfortable with. Something needed to give, and his hands fiddling with a part won out.

"How do you recommend talking to Ani about attachments, then? I can't provide any kind of expertise. I'm not even sure I agree that they're not dangerous."

“They’re not all dangerous, Master. Some are, I can’t argue they’re not. But some are beneficial.”

He paused and snapped a plug into place.

“Palpatine knew he couldn’t convince me to join him unless he got me away from you.” A slightly wicked smile appeared on Anakin’s face. “That’s why it took him so long. I was far more attached to you than him. I imagine he was very frustrated by that.”

Obi-Wan's confused gaze shifted to Anakin's face. Confused, but almost hesitantly vaguely pleased. Like he wanted to be pleased, but it might be a trick.

"...Really?"

Anakin nodded without taking his eyes off the part.

“He had to manipulate the Council into sending you all the way to Utapau before he could really get inside my head in a way that mattered.” His smile faded then, the amusement he gained from knowing he’d always been a thorn in Palpatine’s side in some fashion or other couldn’t buttress him against the reality of their future back home. Not forever, at least.

“He tried a number of different ways to do it… until he found the right set of circumstances.”

"I suppose if nothing else, I know I killed his first apprentice and kept him from his next for as long as possible."

He paused.

"And part of me is relieved I didn't kill his second."

Anakin paused his work on the part. Because Obi-Wan would very nearly kill him, all but running him through with a lightsaber. And it could also be argued being left limbless and burning alive on the bank of a lava flow was as good as killing him. And the sad truth was it would have been better for the galaxy if Obi-Wan had finished him off on Mustafar.

Anakin caught himself and started busying his hands again.

“Third, actually,” he used for his recovery. “I’m sorry, Count Dooku was his second apprentice.” He hoped Obi-Wan guess that was the source of his discomfort rather than the close mention of their duel on Mustafar. “It’s why he left the Order. He was always only meant to bridge the time between Maul and me… it would have been Knight Vergere but she disappeared at Zonama Sekot before she could be useful to Palpatine.”

That was a lot of disturbing information all at once and it wasn't even as disturbing as the flutter he felt through the Force before Anakin said it.

He paled slightly.

"How did he twist so many Jedi?" he whispered.

Anakin shrugged, relieved Obi-Wan didn't comment further on his notable pause.

"How did he convince an entire galactic nation to convert to a dictatorship and feel over joyed to do so? He was a skilled manipulator, and a powerful Force-user."

"But every moment of Jedi training has been derived from our encounters with the Sith throughout our history; it's supposed to prepare us for this. Make us capable of resisting it," Obi-Wan said.

Anakin did look up then. The subtlety with which Palpatine had used the Force on him mind slipped past all the defenses Anakin had been taught. Jedi were particularly honed to confront and battle the blunt force attacks Sith were known for. But not against someone slowly eating away at his mind.

It was the difference between a battering ram at the door, and a poison leaking through the cracks. If your door was built strong enough, the ram wouldn't penetrate. But who could fill every crack?

"The Sith adapted. We failed to do the same. Palpatine let his apprentices be the familiar face of the Sith so we didn't think we had to change. While we were off using the same strategies that had worked last time on Maul, Dooku and Ventress, he was employing new tactics the Order didn't recognize."

The Sith adapted. Possibly where Anakin's mantra of the Order's need for change came from. They had stood resolute guard at the gate for millenia and then their enemy had slithered in through the sewer.

He didn't say anything. What could he say to that?

Anakin felt the change in Obi-Wan's mood. He didn't like the uncomfortable silence that followed. Talking about their future always seemed to kill any conversation.

Before his mind could jump to the conclusion it was really any conversation about him that sucked the joy out of the room, he brought the topic back to Ani.

"I would just try bringing attachment up with him again. It might help ease his mind if you had an honest discussion with him about what you feel for him."

"I was honest with him, Anakin. He scoffed." How much rejection do you think he can take? He already feels like his emotions are getting beyond his control. "I'll tell him again and he'll scoff again. What is it meant to accomplish?"

"And I've told you, I didn't know you cared about me or actually wanted to train me until years into my apprenticeship. If this was the first time you brought up how you felt about him with him, why wouldn't he question the authenticity of your claim?"

"Because I don't lie to him! Why would I make that up?" Obi-Wan asked, clearly agitated by the notion. "Do you really think I'd do that?"

Lie? Not according to you, but your point of view doesn’t always align with others. But Anakin wasn’t here to discuss the finer details of omitting the truth.

“No. But that’s not how emotions work, especially hearing about them from a Jedi. Sometimes you have to explain them. In depth. You can’t expect him to take them as a point of fact. He needs detail.”

He wasn't sure he understood them 'in depth'. He looked vaguely distressed. "What do you mean 'detail'?"

"I mean, have a discussion with him. If he asks questions, answer them honestly. You're not supposed to foster emotions for anyone according to the Code, remember." Anakin stopped fiddling and looked Obi-Wan directly in the eye. "Of course he's going to ask what you're talking about. And yes, this might mean telling him you are imperfect as far as that portion of the Code is concerned. But if you want to be able to tell him you care about him, you have to address it, or he's just going to remain confused and probably become bitter about it."

After a long moment of silence, Obi-Wan got to his feet. "I'll give it some consideration."
