Distraction The (Ex)Jedi Way
Who: Helenakin and Bookerwan
What: Anakin-in-Helena has decided that Obi-Wan-in-Booker needs to get out of his room and do something.
When: Late Friday afternoon.
Where: Obi-Wan's room and then down by the lake.
Warnings: Grumpiness?

Obi-Wan didn't really want to go out among people without all of his senses. They all seemed hollow and wrong. Incomplete. Like a bunch of shells walking around. Still, Anakin was right and some fresh air would probably do him good. He'd been trying to meditate - and the robes Anakin leant him had helped him relax a little - but he still found it hard to focus his thoughts when he couldn't connect with the Force.

He unfolded himself from his seated position on the floor when he heard the door, stretching a little to get out the kinks in his muscles from not moving for several hours.

"Come in, Anakin!" he called.

"Insolently," Obi-Wan replied, tugging at the robes that, while they fit this body, weren't quite made for it. "I have some suspicion that he's been taking advantage of my inability to be aware of him."

Anakin snorted. Maybe it was a gesture of self-satisfaction.

“Of course he has. Did you seriously think he would respond differently?”

"Seriously thought? No. But I had hoped." He looked at Anakin. "You were capable of a great deal of maturity when it suited you, at that age. It seems to suit you less often here than it did even at the Temple."

Anakin’s eyebrow shot up. “Really?” And he barked a laugh. “You and I remember my time at the Temple differently. It’s kind of endearing how well behaved you thought I was.”

Obi-Wan shot him an annoyed look. "I didn't say you were well-behaved; I said you were capable of behaving well. When it suited you." He smoothed the front of his tunic. "And that your younger self is less often well-behaved here. That's more a comment on his bad behaviour than your good behaviour."

"I know what you meant, Master," Anakin said through his grin. "I'm saying you just never caught me. Here, he doesn't have the trillion life signatures of Coruscant to mask his movements. But trust me. I snuck down to the lower levels as often as I could get away with. Sorry to destroy your good opinion of me."

Obi-Wan gave him a sharp look. "Anakin, did you ever actually want to be a Jedi?" he asked. "Because sometimes you seem to enjoy making it look like you didn't."

That erased the smile from Anakin's face. "Of course I did!"

They walked a few steps, each in their scowls, before Anakin answered more. "But my idea of being a Jedi doesn't exclude having fun once in a while- Don't say meditation is fun." This was one of many ideological differences, of course.

"You could have had 'fun' in a more structured environment, Anakin. Illicit street racing in garbage tips and whatever else you got up to in the seediest corners of the city are undignified. Every action taken by every Jedi reflects on the Order." He glanced over at him. "You think sparring is fun. There were a lot of people to spar with in the Temple."

“It seemed perfectly normal for a boy who grew up on a junk heap.” Anakin was care to not actually mention being a slave while referencing that period of his life. “Almost classy, even.” It was Coruscant after all – the city planet, metropolitan center of culture, arts, and academia. Cruising through the shit and refuse of those fine citizens was their gift to him.

“I was only an obligation to them,” he countered. Just a chore. “And besides, sparring isn’t anything like flying.”

"You were not an 'obligation'," Obi-Wan argued irritably. "You were a very challenging sparring partner; working with you was an excellent opportunity for them. And there were respectable ways to fly."

“Master, you were welcome there, I was not. You were the only one who wanted to deal with me. I know.” And he had so many one on one experiences to back that up. Like his time with Master Mundi, for example.

They were approaching the clearing now. It was, as Anakin said earlier, free of an audience.

“And flying transport shuttles or city air speeders are not in any way like flying a pod-racer.”

Oh, Anakin knows and Obi-Wan, who spent his whole life in the Temple, doesn't? Probably leftover feelings from his difficult initial adjustment.

"You know, do you?" He activated his lightsaber and gave the weapon an experimental swing. It felt different in this body. Awkward and weighty. "And how do you know?"

Anakin pressed the switch on his own hilt, the blade humming to life. He passed it through a patch of grass, testing it. As predicted, or hoped, the blade made a noise like a string of z’s, and the grass trembled, but nothing was singed or cut. No one was going to lose a limb on account of Anakin’s blade this sparring session.

“As it turns out, you’re not the only Master I had at the Temple.” Yes, that was a good place to start.

He stepped across from Obi-Wan, taking a familiar Form I starting position.

His immediate reaction was an irritated "What are you talking about? That's..." Then his expression sobered, even became grim.

"I did something wrong," he surmised. "They took you away from me." He must have made a monumental error in judgement; the Council only took a Padawan away from his Master if they were certain the Master's tutelage was going to have an adverse affect on the Padawan.

"What did I do?"

Because it had to be that. Obi-Wan was, deep down and (mostly) secretly, always concerned that he wasn't instructing Anakin adequately. That he'd fail the bright, restless, brilliant boy somehow.

Anakin wanted to roll his eyes. Of course Obi-Wan jumped to that conclusion. He always did.

“Yes,” Anakin confirmed none too gently. Or was that sarcasm? “You make the egregious mistake of being captured in battle by Dooku’s then acolyte, Ventress, who cut you off from the Force so everyone thought you were dead. Leaving the Council with the unfortunate mess of finding me a replacement Master.”

"Cut me off from the Force? How is that even..." But his renewed irritation that such a thing could be gave way to the rest of what Anakin said. "Who did they assign you to?"

“Ventress is very resourceful. She’s the one who-” and without thinking Anakin gestured to his right eye, forgetting completely he wasn’t in his body with the scars on his face. But he remembered when he saw his non-metallic hand.

“Master Mundi was the unfortunate one who drew the short straw. I think he was happier than I was to learn you were still alive.”

"It's not a 'short straw'," Obi-Wan snapped. He sincerely hoped that Master Mundi hadn't seen it that way. Because it wasn't one. Teaching Anakin, though at times infuriating, had been a genuine pleasure. He'd learned a lot. Any of the Masters in the Temple could do the same if they were open to what the resourceful young man had to offer. "Stop talking about it like it was some sort of lottery that nobody wanted to win. Master Mundi must have volunteered. It's against Jedi tradition to be forced into taking on a Padawan unwillingly."

Anakin dropped his stance then out of frustration. “I know my own experience, Obi-Wan. I know what they thought of me. Quit trying to reframe it for me in a way that makes you feel better. They never wanted me there, they wanted their Chosen One. And there’s a big different between being resigned to ones duty and actually wanting to take on a specific Padawan.”

Agitation drove him to swipe his blade at the ground. “And that tradition seemed to go down the garbage chute when it came to me.”

Obi-Wan didn't want to think that was true, but the sheer ferocity of Anakin's reproach told him that he believed it was. It stilled Obi-Wan.

"I'm so sorry," he replied, his voice barely more than a whisper. "I hope you believe it was never the 'short straw' to me."

He'd been upset with those who had given Anakin that impression when he'd reacted, but the retort he'd received in turn shamed him.

"I'm afraid rather a lot of convention was set aside for you."

He was too old to begin the training; it had started there. Had they forced him on another Master when Obi-Wan was 'dead'? Perhaps they had. Perhaps they had chosen someone more their ideal to show Anakin some real self-discipline. Whatever their reasoning, it seemed to grate on Anakin. Obi-Wan hadn't been there. He couldn't pretend to know.

"If it was sometimes to your benefit, then I'm prepared to believe it was sometimes to your detriment as well."

Defiance prompted one more deep breath from Anakin before he dropped his gaze. Obi-Wan’s hope was in vain in one regard. It had taken Anakin a long time before he believed Obi-Wan actually liked him. He didn’t know exactly when it dawned on him, but there were a number of years under the man’s tutelage where he simply didn’t know.

Emotions – he was never very good at hiding them – scattered across his face, giving him away if Obi-Wan could put the pieces together without the Force. He didn’t have it in him to tell the truth and hurt Obi-Wan with it, but he wasn’t going to lie either. He let the weight of silence cover what he couldn’t and hoped it was enough.

Impatient, he asked, “Are we going to spar?”

Obi-Wan wasn't useless at interpreting body language to read emotion, but it wasn't his greatest strength either. He could tell that Anakin didn't want to say whatever it was he was thinking. That stung enough, because if he didn't want to say it, it probably wouldn't be pleasant to hear. Which meant it was the unpleasant option. He also turned his glance downward and nodded, igniting his lightsaber. He drew a breath, then looked past his glowing blade at the unfamiliar female face just past it.

It took Anakin another deep breath before he could leave their provoking conversation behind. He never had good control of his emotions, that didn’t change with his current borrowed body.

He nodded and stepped into position again, raising his blade, giving Obi-Wan the signal to begin.

The saber already felt clumsy in his hand. It wasn't part of him, it was just something he was holding. He stuck at Anakin and the blow lacked grace, though it went where he wanted it to.
