Who: Anakin Sr. and Peter
What: Peter has a question for Master Anakin after class
When: Wednesday early afternoon
Where: Classroom at the University
Rating/Warnings: Probably low
NOTES: At the University Anakin goes by a shortening of his last name, Walker (on Claudia’s suggestion to aid anonymity)
Status: In progress/Closed

Compared to the day before today was a rather uninteresting day. Thus far. Maybe young Ani would get it in his head to take Luke’s land-speeder out for spin disrupting the calm? That was the type of thing Anakin recalled fondly from his youth, finding all those ways he could interject some kind of excitement, his kind of thrills into the hum-drum normalcy of training at the Temple. It was only a matter of time before young Ani was off doing something yet again for which the older version had to feign disappointment, like he’d done the night before. (Because in Anakin’s three days spent up in the mountains earlier in the summer, the dragons had been quite the highlight.) Which also redirected Padmé ire onto the adult version, like had also happened the night before.

Today, blessedly, Ani had gone to school, and Anakin could still feel the presence of that boy in the back of his mind, indicating that the young boy was still at school. And what trouble could a child get into in a building full of adults? Anakin’s afternoon should prove uneventful.

The long hand of the clock had reached the hour and Anakin ended that day’s lecture. Student’s snapped shut laptops and notebooks, bags were stuffed and bodies filed out into the hall intent to either just be free of the room or to make it to other classes on time. Anakin turned to gather his own things and clean up the board for the next occupants. As he was erasing his illegible chicken-scratch writings on the white surface (though to him it was all decipherable) he sensed one student had yet to leave. He knew who it was without looking, but in an effort to seem less unnerving he looked over his shoulder before addressing the young man.

“Mr. Parker?” he said. As filling the role of instructor Anakin was keen on keeping with formalities. It was how he understood the teacher-student relationship to work. It was why he still referred to Obi-Wan as Master – their relationship wasn’t that of equals. Not anymore, and it was arguable it never had been. It helped him define the boundaries of the classroom, even if Anakin had been forced to learn more details about the young man, like grooming and hygiene habits, during that week Peter was stuck with Padme than Anakin cared to know. He faced forward to finish cleaning the board. “I take it you have a question.”

Anakin fell deadly silent when Peter asked that.

He stood with his arms crossed simply staring at the younger man. It was a stare, he’d been told, that seemed to highlight the scar that started above his right eye and ended on his cheek. It made the edges of his expression tight and unforgiving. It was unfaltering. His right hand still gripped the marker and snapped the cap on and off. The resultant sharp click reported through the air around them, the only sound for the agonizing long seconds Anakin just stood there glowering.

“Are you familiar with the Scientific Method, Mr. Parker?” Anakin had to ask, because asking ‘what was the point,’ of learning the basic mathematics of engineering at this level of education defied comprehension. Anakin understood, more than most, doing ‘just what felt right,’ when it came to all things mechanical and tech. The Force had imbued him with a talent for mathematics and engineering that shocked even the Masters of his Order. But even he knew the benefit of understanding why something worked, not just accepting that it did. Trial and error had their place, as did the foundation principles of this field of study. “I just want to make sure we’re on the same level.”

Peter stared back. He may be awkward and stumbling, but he was braver that most eighteen year old boys. Although no'one in their right mind would call this comfortable, he didn't feel particularly bad for getting that kind of look out of his teacher. Teachers got annoyed at him all the time. If it had been Aunt May giving him that stare he'd probably have run for the hills, but she was his aunt. He adored her, and it was that that made the difference. His gaze did flick a little nervously down to the clicking pen lid, and strong muscles in his shoulders and legs coiled a fraction, ready to propel himself upwards.

"A method or procedure concerning systematic observation, measurement, and experiment, and the formulation, testing, and modification of hypotheses." Peter parroted obediently. After all, he had been to school. He wasn't a complete idiot, just because he wasn't from Anakin's universe and he'd rather be welding stuff together than scrawling numbers into a blackboard. He could do it with his eyes closed, but it wasn't exactly the highlight of his life.

He was also slightly beginning to wish he'd just plugged his question into an internet search engine.

Anakin had no intention of doing something as drastic as lunging at Peter, or Force choking him for that question. That would be stupid not only for the consequence of losing his job. Despite what most people thought about him, he was quite aware of the boundaries of society, and stayed well within them without much effort, even if his demeanor was blunt.

"The success of scientific breakthrough isn't the initial discovery, but the repetition of results, and without a language to define and describe the why of every prediction or result nothing would make sense," he started, no less threatening in tone than he'd been all along. "Every step, even trial and error, is bound by this mathematical language. What's the point? That's like a composer asking what's the point of learning musical scales and how to draw up lines of music. They can hum can't they? They are set to draft a symphony."

He set the marker down on the ledge of the white board and picked up the eraser to clean the black ink.

"I know you're a highly intelligent student, Mr. Parker, brilliant even," he continued, holding off wiping the board just yet. "I don't doubt your ability to comprehend the material. But if you knew this material enough to toss it away in favor of just seeing because you just know you wouldn't have had a question after class. For someone who has as much potential as you I expect better than questioning the foundations of science."
