Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:!ickle plot, albus potter, ickle regulus black, ickle sirius black, regulus black, sirius black

Who: Ickles: Reg and Sirius (maybe Al?); Adults: Reg and Sirius and definitely Al (please say you'll play with us Heather!)
What: The Pocket Blacks try to make an escape, are caught and then forced to witness what they grow into.
When: Monday morning
Where: Regulus and Al's rooms
Rating/Warnings: Low at first, then sure to spike when the Adult Blacks are forced to confront each other.
Status: In progress, closed

The adult who was sported the name of Regulus and looked something like Uncle Alphard (but wasn't Uncle Alphard) had walked back into the other room for a moment, leaving the younger Regulus on the sofa. This was a bad idea all around. Unsupervised, and under the direction of his brother, via the cell phone thing (that the Adult Version had showed him how to use) the younger version of Regulus was definitely not about to stay put on that sofa. Regulus wasn't about to just sit there while some strange adults walked around trying to control things.

Regulus glanced at all the doors and when a few more seconds passed and no adults issued from any other rooms he slipped off the sofa and started for the front door, wholly intent on leaving. But before he'd gone no more than a few steps it opened a crack and he froze. But when he saw the face of his brother pop around the edge his face broke into a wide grin. Of course his brother would have found him, of that Regulus had never doubted.

"Sirius!" he said in a harsh whisper, and moved quicker for the door.

It had taken Sirius a little while to understand the strange way this castle was organised. There were numbers and North and South and there weren't even any portraits that moved so he couldn't ask them. But it was very, very important he find Regulus, and eventually Sirius had found himself on a corridor with numbers close to the one he was looking for. He was a little tired from running up and down the stairs, and he paused for a moment to catch his breath before he tried the handle, feeling a rush of relief as the door swung open and he was met with his brothers face.

Sirius flashed the younger boy a self-assured, easy grin, that appeared a lot more confident than he really felt. His stomach was doing nervous little flips. His eyes flickered towards the doorway he supposed the grown-ups had vanished through. He felt better now he saw his brother - Sirius didn't trust adults. He hadn't really met many nice ones, and he didn't really want strangers who looked like Uncle Alphard looking after Regulus. Although Uncle Alphard wasn't actually all that bad. Sirius wished they saw him more, really...

He gestured to Regulus, urging him to hurry up. "Come on!" he hissed. But then there was a figure in the far door, and Sirius froze, his dark eyes widening in something close to fear for a moment. Then, coming to an quick decision, Sirius squirmed into the room through the cracked door.

The nine-year old bounded over to stand close to Regulus, one hand seizing his younger brothers wrist as he shot the tall stranger a fierce, defensive stare, young jaw clenched into a sharp line. Regulus' bony shoulder was digging into his arm. "What d'you want?" Sirius demanded.

Regulus, the adult, not the younger version, had had a rough night. Not that the younger's adventures thus far hadn't been tough, showing up in a strange castle in the company of strangers, and far from home - home being his brother. But Regulus had already put out two fires that night with both younger version of Al and Jamie showing up and then locking themselves in the bathroom, while younger Al teetered on the verge of a panic attack. A fun night that, only it didn't end in a sleep in for everyone. Nope, now Regulus had a smaller version of himself that he was trying to sort out.

After convincing his younger self that he wasn't going to harm him, a conversation mostly consisting of Regulus talking while his younger self stared at him silently (he'd forgotten how he could get that silent) he'd shown the boy how to use the cell phone. He figured it would keep him occupied while he tried to figure out what to do.

He slipped out to grab a jumper and a pair of socks, as all his younger self had on were pajamas and while the heat might be working in this place, and spring was there, it was still chilly for little boy. When he returned it took him a second to register there was another boy in the room. Another boy who was so achingly familiar.

"Sirius?" he said reflexively.

Shit! If a younger version of his brother was there meant he would have to deal with the older, too. And they had been doing so well pretending the other didn't exist. The long night had turned into what was sure to be a long day.

"Al, I need your help."

Regulus' eye lingered briefly on the protective way Sirius guarded his younger brother before he sighed, turning away to shut the door. "You two should sit down." Not that he expected a defiant Sirius to listen to him.

Sirius' eyes narrowed when the man said his name, automatically moving a little closer to his brother, his hand slipping from Regulus' wrist to take his hand properly. Then the man was calling for the person called Al and turning away, and Sirius managed to whisper awkwardly to Regulus. "How does he know my name?" he asked. The stranger did look like a Black, and there was something about him that Sirius recognised... Maybe he was family after all. Sirius lost track sometimes. Despite being made to study that stupid tree.

But then he was being told to sit down, and Sirius scowled at him. He didn't know this man, and he certainly wasn't about to do anything he said. He'd kidnapped Regulus, and Sirius wasn't a fan of anyone who took his brother away. "I don't want to," he told the man stubbornly. Then his voice rose a fraction, hand tightening in his brothers grip.

"Who are you, anyway? Where are we? What are you doing with Reg?" He sniffed, looking around the room, dragging the back of his free hand over his nose until the end flushed pink. Then he pulled his shoulders back and gave the stranger a furious stare. "We're going now," Sirius announced.

"Yeah, what-Oh." Al glanced back over his shoulder and shook his head, shutting the door on his and James' little snoring selves before coming to stand beside Reg.

"...You know," Al scratched the back of his neck as he tried to work out what they were going to do with them. It was hard enough convincing Jamie and littler Al to stay put for the night, and by convincing Al meant subtle threatening to tell their dad and the promise of proof in the morning, but overall it worked.

"This might be one of those unavoidable times you've got to talk to Sirius."

Regulus gave Al an imploring look. It would have been nice if Al had said 'I'll take care of it' then Regulus could on his merry way and not have to deal with this anymore. Alas, Al was a bit evil in his own right and seemed to like making Regulus 'grow' as a person, whatever that meant. Regulus sighed and nodded then moved over to where small Sirius and Regulus were standing. Goodness had they ever been small.

"This is for Regulus," he handed the jumper and socks to Sirius, as he was sure he couldn't hand them directly to his younger self with small Sirius standing right there looking as if he would take on a mountain troll for his younger brother. Something twisted in his gut over those memories, but he pushed them away, those times were past for him, no use dwelling on them even if they were being reenacted right before his eyes.

And where to start for an explanation? Small Al and Jamie had been tough enough convincing, and they came from relative safety and love. Just shit, of course peace and quiet was too much to ask for.

"We're all kidnapped, you, Reg, and me and Al," Regulus pointed at Al. And for now that should be enough because he had to make that dreaded call. "Al, can you watch- I have to call-" And then he took out his phone and started dialing, time to get this over with.

The younger Sirius was rapidly coming to the decision that these two men were probably a bit stupid. For one thing, that Al one had just said 'this might be one of those times you've got to talk to Sirius' when he was right there and could hear every word. It probably wouldn't be that hard to escape from them, Sirius decided. But then the one that Reg had said was also called Regulus was handing clothes over, which was nice of him, so perhaps...

Sirius chewed methodically on his bottom lip, clutching the woolen jumper in his hand and holding tight to his brother with the other, not letting his defensive stare waver from the two adults. Still, at the news that they had been kidnapped he couldn't help but turn to (younger) Regulus was a smug grin. "I told you," he told him. before adding, "Are you cold? Here..." And passing the jumper and things over.

-------

In the meantime, the older Sirius was doing a remarkably good job of running around the castle like a lunatic. In fact, he was just considering, with a sinking feeling deep in his gut, stepping into the library of all places when his phone buzzed in his back pocket. Sirius reached back, hoping for James or Remus or Rajani with news on his idiot of a younger self. But that wasn't the name that appeared.

Sirius felt his stomach lurch, and for a long moment he stared at the screen, finger hovering awkwardly over the button. But he knew what it was about. He'd known, really, from the moment his younger self had vanished what the boy was looking for. He remembered what he'd been like, who his number one priority had always been. Sirius winced as he pressed the 'accept call' button, pressing the phone to his ear.

"Have you got him?" he ground out, speaking through suddenly clenched teeth.

Small Reg had grown silent. He did that when he was unsure of himself, scared, intimidated, or sometimes he just did it just because. And he could do it for a really long time, because sometimes he just didn't have anything to say.

He nodded when his brother asked him if he was cold. He'd been cold since he arrived but hadn't said anything because it didn't seem like the most important issue to tackle - that most important being finding his brother. He let go long enough to pull the heavy, large jumper over his head and to sit and put on socks. But the moment he had them on he was back up at his brother's side, pressed close and holding his hand. It was an act of trust and faith. If someone was going to figure those out it would be his brother, he always did.

~~~
Regulus closed his eyes and pinched at the bridge of his nose while he waited for his brother to pick up. His hand dropped when he heard the ringing stop and the click announcing someone had picked up. And he was disappointed, oddly, when all his brother asked for was if he had the smaller Sirius.
He paused before simply saying, "S22," and then he ended the call. Over and done with. Maybe this wouldn't be too painful, and then again... He turned back to the smalls, tapping the phone against the palm of his hand to fight the urge to reach for a cigarette.
It was morning so, they might be hungry? It was a thought. And he opened the front door to flag down one of the staff to bring up food. "Do you want breakfast?"
Small Sirius, who had been running a critical eye over his brothers new clothing, turned around sharply when the man finished what looked like the quickest conversation in the world on his weird muggle box thing. At the question, he turned to Regulus, seeming to consider his brother again before coming to an executive decision and turning back.
"Okay," he agreed. He was hungry. Starving, actually. "Can we have pancakes?" Perhaps he was pushing it a bit - asking something like that from his parents certainly wouldn't have been smart - but Sirius thought you might as well push things, really. They'd already been kidnapped. He'd learnt back home that there were likely to be repercussions to most things, and he thought he might as well get screamed at for something massive than something small. Sirius cocked his head, dark eyes narrowing a fraction.
"Is your name really Regulus?" he asked, curiously. There was a moment silence, and the boy shrugged and nodded his head in his little siblings direction. "He says it is. And -"
At that moment there was a sharp, irritated rap at the door, and little Sirius froze, shoulders tensing, pulling Regulus behind him a little as his attention switched easily over.
Regulus wasn't sure what was for breakfast that morning, he'd only asked the woman a general request for food, but pancakes were probably a good bet. If they weren't brought up with the first round of food they could probably be ordered.
"Right we'll see." He started to nod and confirm what the smaller version of Sirius was asking. Another long explanation about how two versions of themselves could indeed exist simultaneously together. But then their was a quick knock at the door, halting further discussion.
Regulus knew that knock, the staff was always very polite, even in the way they rapped on the doors, and besides, it would take longer to go to the kitchens, prepare plates and then return with food than the time had allowed. That was Sirius, older Sirius, at the door. But, Regulus had to give it too his brother, at least he'd knocked.
He considered just opening the door with magic but came to the conclusion when he saw the smalls focus on the door, and they way Sirius pulled his younger brother behind him, the less to make everyone jump the better. But that wasn't to say he opened the door with a grin and a greeting. He simply pulled it open and stepped back to let his adult version brother step through.
Sirius stepped neatly in, hands shoved deep into his jean pockets. For a moment his gaze flickered onto his adult sibling, and a shiver of something shot up his spine, making muscles knot in his back. He kept a distance between them, taking a deep breath to calm the sudden tightness in his chest. Next he recognised Al, stood a little distance away, and gave him a cursory nod before his gaze fell on the two children stood in the middle of the carpet.
Sirius recognised himself instantly, younger but with the sharp tilt of his jaw, set defiantly against the newcomer, his hand linked tightly with that of the younger boy. Small Regulus was a little behind his older brother, and for some mad reason the sight of him wrenched somewhere deep in the adult Sirius' chest, tearing painfully. He blinked.
"You," the animagus finally told his younger self. "You can't just run off like that. I thought a dragon had eaten you."
The younger version of Sirius gave his older version a scathing look, although his body remained wound tight, bracing for he-didn't-know-what. "That's stupid," he told the tall man.
"You're stupid," retorted older Sirius.
"Your hair is stupid."
"Oi!" Sirius' hand flew to his hair, and a smirk curled at the corner of the younger versions mouth. A second later, an identical smile was playing over the adult version's face, and he shook his head. "Shut up. Let's go." He turned to leave, then froze when he realised there was no movement behind him. The bigger Sirius turned back, only to find his child self stood stubbornly in the middle fof the carpet, looking at him like he'd just suggested he grow another head. His hand was still linked tightly with Regulus'.
"I'm not going," he said to the older Sirius, as if this was painfully obvious. "I'm staying with Reg."
There was a horrible silence.
Broken by poorly muffled laughter. Al tried to hide it in the sleeve of his over-sized sweatshirt, but nothing could hide the creases at the corner of his eyes or the funny half-wheeze noise he made instead.
"You can stay, mate. We've got extra space." James had slept on the sofa that night, but he'd left when the little's refused to wake up. Al didn't know what his little self would be feeling once he woke, but he bet it wouldn't be happiness.
"And pancakes. I've got a skillet remember? Magic." Al wiggled his fingers and gave Reg a very pointed 'don't fuck up or else' type look before disappearing into their bedroom.
Regulus didn't know what to address first in that stilted awkwardness. The small boys, one defiant against the adult, the other clearly on the verge of trembling, if Regulus knew his self well enough and Regulus remembered his youth all too clearly to know know the warning signs right there in that impossibly tight gripping little hand. Al's muffled laughter, oh of course, on the surface that exchange was hilarious, though it did raise the question of how Regulus was supposed to go about having a rational conversation with that - that being the older version of his brother, that is. And then there was the older version of his brother, as much as Regulus appreciated Al's attempts at levity over the situation, he was missing something from the end of that exchange that Regulus saw pass over his brother's face.
Fuck did small Sirius have to say it like that? But of course he would, the smaller versions didn't know a thing about the next ten years of their lives, how in just two short years the safety they found in each other would be forcefully taken away by Her and destroyed while they watched. And that they wouldn't ever get it back. These two didn't have a fucking clue they were staring at their future, split apart and strangers.
Al left to find that skillet - funny that, as Al had bought it as a gag gift in case Regulus wanted to use it to bash over his brother's head. Regulus was grateful for Al helping by speaking up to break the silence, and address the concerns of the boys, but the problem was infinitely greater that than now. The younger version of Sirius had inadvertently made this about more than just the arrival of two small boys.
"He didn't mean me, Sirius," Regulus tried to say low enough that the boys wouldn't catch it. He knew how his brother would take that. As odd as this was he knew Sirius would find this hilarious, the smaller version of himself roaming around. He knew his brother would have a strange ego stroking pride about his amazing younger self at his side. And to hear his younger self proclaim, in an odd sort of way, a denunciation of his older self in favor of Regulus would not go down well. Even if the smaller version meant the other, small version standing right next to him, the conflation of the two versions of Regulus was all to easy in a hot headed mind like Sirius'.
Sirius felt like his younger self had just punched him in the face. Which would be one for the books, seeing as Sirius currently had about a foot and a half height advantage on the younger. For a moment he was pushed back, thrown violently into his own memories in a way that made his head spin. He remembered being that child. For a mad second he rather wanted to turn out the door and pelt away, to find James or Remus or someone who could distract him, anything so long as he didn't have to deal with this. Then, quickly, the ache in his chest was replaced by a familiar tightness and a buzzing at the base of his skull, a heat that spread through his veins.
This wasn't fair. He was frustrated and angry and he didn't want to have his stupid, idiotic past played out in front of him. Sirius rather wanted to punch something, and his fingers curled into a fist at his side without his permission. With great difficulty, Sirius turned away from where he could feel his adult brothers gaze on his profile, taking a breath that did little to improve his mood. He considered just venting his frustrations on the wall, but then remembered the two children. They were used to ranting adults, and if they saw Sirius hitting anything then he knew they'd assume they'd be the next target.
God, that made him feel sick.
Sirius turned back to his older brother, a tendon standing out in the graceful curve of his neck, teeth grinding painfully. His hand twitched agitatedly at his side. "What d'you want to do?" he forced out, doing his best to keep his voice low. Then, after a quick glance to where the boys had just been standing, he sighed, pinching at the bridge of his nose in an odd mirror of his brothers earlier gesture. "And now they're under the table. Do they know who we are?"
Of course, younger Sirius had caught the change in mood and had immediately found somewhere to hide his little brother away.
“Jesus fucking Christ,” Regulus hissed under his breath at his brother’s display of whatever the fuck that was. For the briefest moment, when Regulus saw his brother’s hand curl into a fist, he thought he was going to raise that arm against him. It was not a belief founded in any past action, his brother had never before hit him, but the way the cords strained in his brother’s neck warned him the possibility wasn’t so farfetched. As much gaiety as Al could try to interject into this exchange Regulus was painfully aware it would always be teetering on the edge of disaster.
Considering where the smaller two boys were now what would be best was to discuss this away from them rather than in front of them, where their presence and the possible things they might say could set either of the two older versions off.
“Albus, watch them,” he called; knowing Al, rummaging through their things, would hear and come back into the main room. He didn’t give it a second thought before he was opening the door and shoving his brother none too gently out into the hall.
“Fuck Sirius,” the insult was crossing Regulus’ lips the moment the door latched shut, “I knew you hated me but I didn’t think you would extend that to small children.”
Sirius glowered at his brother. Not only becaue he'd just been shoved, which he'd never really appreciated. How had this even happened, anyway? How had two children who were as strongly linked as the two in there turned into this? Two grown men glaring and swearing at each other in the hall, years of painful, violent distance stretched out between them?
"Oh," Sirius cocked an eyebrow scathingly, crossing his arms and leaning one shoulder against the wall. "I have no problem with the children, Regulus. As you can see..." he jerked his head towards the tightly shut door. "I'm actually pretty fond of that version of you. D'you think we get to pick which Regulus stays? Because, you see, that's my brother. I don't really know what you are any more." He glared coldly across at Regulus in the silence of the hall, before adding something else.
"And you do know your tablecloth is probably on fire by now?"
Regulus glared back at his brother, fighting the rising emotions of hurt and betrayal. The firm set of his jaw and his narrow eyes gave away that he wasn't doing such a good job of it. He would give anything for those younger versions of him and his brother to be gone and for him and his brother to go back to pretending the other didn’t exist. Life had fallen into such a relatively peaceful routine.
It was a few seconds of a silent glare down before Regulus had the voice to speak.
“Horseshit. You think he didn’t see the way you reacted to his name? He’s probably in there right now worrying about what he’s done wrong to you. You don’t care about him, and he isn’t your brother any more than I am.”
Regulus wasn’t the best with children. Al was loads better, he just related to them more readily. Regulus didn’t have to worry about his tablecloth, Al could hold his own, Potter were known for their abilities to look after Blacks. Regulus lacked all those talents, but right at that moment he felt rather protective of that scared little boy hiding behind his brother under the table. Probably borne from experience of knowing what it was like to not have an adult look after his best interest. “So just go piss off, because there is no way I’m letting him go with someone who wants to punch a wall every time he hears his name.”
Sirius rolled his eyes, pushing his body away from the door and straightening up to make use of his full height, glad of that extra inch he had on Regulus. "I think I've had a hell of a lot more experience looking after eight year old you than you have. I know how to deal with him because I, obviously, spent every moment of my childhood doing just that. I'm also a lot less likely to take any crap from younger me."
"Fuck off!" he retorted, in response to Regulus' final statement. "What in the name of Merlin's blue balls makes you think I'm happy leaving either of them with you?" Sirius was still having trouble separating 'Regulus Black' and 'Death Eater' in his head. Regulus might as well have suggested Sirius throw the little boys in the next room into a vat of acid.
"Right. This is mental," Sirius groaned, stepping back in a hope that'd let him breathe, stop the angry tightening in his chest. His fingers tapped agitatedly against his thigh, his knee jumping randomly. Sirius forced himself to keep his voice level, because if he knew his younger self, he'd be straining to hear what they were up to. "What're we gonna do then? We clearly can't agree..."
Regulus didn't back down, even if his brother was the more physically intimidating of the two Black brothers, he'd faced worse. Privately, in front of Al he might break down, he most likely would when this was all over, and did he ever want to snap the rubberband hidden up his sleeve on his wrist until his skin was red and angry. But not here.
"For fuck's sake!" Regulus didn't even try to hide his scorn, but he did manage to keep his tone low enough not to carry. "You're absolutely right, I was about to spit them both and sling them over an open flame before you showed up. If only I hadn't called you so that you could know where they were and thwart my nefarious plans."
"You get high marks for losing one already and for being the cause of them hiding under the table." And then Regulus laughed, with as much mocking in the tenor of his voice as possible. "Right, you know them so well you knew right were to find them and called me- oh, wait, you didn't." He stopped short of just saying Sirius was inept.
"I think when you're ready to not make this all about you you can try again."
It took every inch of Sirius (admittedly very limited) self-control not to shove his brother back against the wall and smack him one. There was that laugh, and a mocking, sneering, 'I'm so much better than you' tone to his voice that made Sirius think of dark halls and a muttering elf and his Mother's cool gaze from the end of a table. It made him remember that house and the way they'd all spoken to him, and it set his teeth on edge. He sucked in a lungful of air, pushing his temper down, although every muscle in his body was wound impossibly tight.
"I knew exactly where he'd have gone," Sirius growled. "I knew, because, for some fucking reason, I loved you at his age. So don't you fucking look down on me. I had enough of you lot looking at me like I'm shit."
"I'm not the one making this about me," Sirius retorted,. "You're doing a brilliant job of doing that all on your own. I bet if anyone else had come and offered to take them from you, you'd have jumped at the chance. No matter how they acted." He met Regulus' glare equally, feeling hot fury bubble like poision underneath his skin.
"... We can hear you, you know," came a little voice from the other side of the door.
Regulus opened his mouth to shot back before the hurt registered on his face and gave him away. But someone called out from inside, he was certain it was Sirius as at that age Regulus’ main default defense was being very quiet. Clearly his plan of having this confrontation where it wouldn’t directly bother the two small children inside had failed.
“Some fucking reason, huh?” he raised his eyebrow and gave a short, disgusted snort, “Ya, you really like that version of me.” It was hard to mistake the sarcasm in his voice.
Regulus had reached the limit of his patience. Sirius was holding onto something that was at least three years dead for the older Black and, as Regulus had already accepted, wasn’t something Regulus could change. The only good thing between them was distance, a whole fucking lot of distance.
“Get away from my rooms,” in a tone that bordered on defeated weariness, but still conveyed a dangerous edge.
