While Malia appreciated the finer aspects of indoor living, she felt most at home when she was outside. For years she’d lived as a coyote and there were days that being inside simply made her feel caged. Perhaps if she hadn’t spent time at Eichen House she’d have fewer of them that crept up on her and made her too restless to stay anywhere with walls surrounding her. Those were the days she had the most trouble with while at school and she was thankful that this day was one where she wouldn’t have to sit through class impatiently waiting for the bell to ring so she could bolt and finally be out where the fresh air was. Instead she’d simply been able to leave a note for her dad telling him she’d be out at the preserve for a few hours.
It was peaceful, and it felt more like home to her than the house she actually lived in. The smells surrounding her were comforting, making her feel at peace as she made her way to her favorite place to sit. Tucked away in the trees away from the paths people used to walk, where the scents of humans were scarce because they rarely came out this way. It meant that she could close her eyes and pretend she was back the way she was before, when it was easier and she hadn’t had to worry about grades or making sure she didn’t worry her dad or whether or not she had any friends. Back when she was a just a coyote there’d only been the worry about survival. Hunt, eat, live. Now she sometimes felt like she was consumed with anxiety or drowning in stress, and she hated it. There was nothing simple about being human again, but even so she felt that surely after several years back on two legs she should have adjusted better than this.
Then again, her first introduction back to the land of humanity had been within the walls of Eichen House. Nothing about that had been pleasant, and she’d been stuck there for over a year before finally being allowed to go home to her dad. Even then though, she’d been isolated for the most part. Save for the Hales, who had graciously allowed her to join them. Really, it made it understandable that she was still something of an outsider when it came to the rest of the world, but it didn’t make her feel any better about it. All it really did was make her all too aware of the differences as “the girl who’d been kidnapped” that set her apart from her peers. It was a turn of thoughts that was ruining the peace being in the preserve had brought her.
Counting to three silently, Malia tried to clear her mind of all thoughts. Breathing in deeply she tried to focus merely on what she was smelling and hearing and nothing else. There was a squirrel somewhere to her right chattering in a tree, a dog had wandered through fairly recently, and when she tilted her face to the left the wind brought the faint scent of a human nearby that was getting closer. Hopefully said human would wander off on their own and not discover her there and bother her. Unlikely considering every breath the scent grew stronger now accompanied by the unmistakeable sounds of someone walking until Malia knew her attempt at recapturing her peace was going to be destroyed.
