He’d forgotten what the day was until it was already too late and Briar had been in Madison Valley enough years to know what nightfall meant. He’d liked the fireworks before. They’d been exciting and different and he could imagine Sandry being delighted by them, could imagine Daja and Tris getting all girly over them, could even imagine Rosethorn smiling at them. This year, he knew it was going to be different. This year he knew the noise was only going to make him think about the war, of the zayao explosions that had taken so many lives before he could even think to try to protect them, or to want to heal them afterwards. He knewit wouldn’t be a good time for him, and there was only one place he was going to feel safe enough to not break down completely.
Cassie had helped pull him back from panic before, after he’d let her know a little of what had happened at home. Maybe she could stop it from happening in the first place, too.
He zipped out of the house, the plants he was tending abandoned on his work bench, as soon as he realized what was. But it wasn’t soon enough. Briar quietly raced toward her house as the first sounds of the explosions echoed too closely for comfort. His boots dropped onto the grass and scaled the wall to her window, the tap he gave to let her know he was there giving away the panic that flooded him. He should have remembered sooner, he should have thought of it when Paige had said she was going to the fireworks,he shouldn’t have been caught unawares.
Briar didn’t give Cassie a chance to respond before he was tapping her window again, sending a prayer to any god that would listen that the light on meant she was there because he didn’t know what he was going to do if she wasn’t.
