Jughead was in a tiny bit of a panic. His computer would not turn back on again. It had randomly crapped out on him in the middle of writing up a paper and hadn't turned back on since. It was his final paper worth half his grade and this could not be happening. He tried everything he could think of to get it to start, including leaving it plugged in overnight. He'd tried removing the battery and cleaning out any fuzz or dust that might've been there. He was at a loss and his paper was due next week, so he gathered up his laptop and power cord and headed for the computer repair store.

Clones Plus was the first place he came across and he walked in looking a bit frazzled. "Hi," he greeted, though there was no pause as he set his laptop on the counter in front of the woman. "I need help. My computer will not turn on and my paper is on there and it's worth half my grade. Please tell me you can fix this." He was desperate.

There was an immediate relief to a lot of his stress when she said she could get his paper for him. His other writing was important to get from his computer, but a chunk of it was saved on a thumb drive because that was how he and Mal collaborated on their shared story. It wasn't so much a forefront anymore of their relationship, but it was important. It was their story.

"It's an English Lit paper, though I'm tossing some history in, too. I took a look at a couple of different types of literature that was published in the 1930s, 40s and 50s to pull common themes and how you can show the progress of the war based on how and what authors were choosing to write about at the time." He made it seem like it was no big deal, but it was definitely a college level approach and he was proud of all the work he'd put into it. Jughead loved English Lit, loved writing and crafting a story, loved dissecting every nuance and choice to find a deeper meaning to it all.

"You can really get it all back?"

That sounded...really interesting, actually, and Paige made a little impressed noise. She'd always been more about the quantifiable but she had an appreciation for literature and his approach was almost something she might have tried herself in her college days. If she'd have thought of it; she doubted she would have.

"I wouldn't hand it in without a good proofread, but yeah. That's the easy part. You saved, right? I don't have to go digging for a back up?" She could find that, too, if she needed to but she'd prefer not to need to.

She'd prefer if she could just figure out what had failed and replace it and not have to pull files for him at all, but that might not be as quick a task.

"Auto save every thirty seconds. I'm a writer. I have to make sure everything is saved but I hadn't gotten around to backing up my hard drive." It really was a big misstep that he was regretting from the moment his computer had crashed. That was going to be the first thing he did if she was able to recover his work.

Jughead watched her as she looked over his machine. "I really appreciate anything you can do to get as much as you can back." Even if it was just his research or half his paper, he could reconstruct the rest. He'd prefer not to since he'd done a lot of editing and tweaking already, but he would if he had to. "Do you deal with this sort of thing often?"

“Usually nothing this serious. You’d be surprised how often it’s just not connected to power.” Which she has of course checked first. It wasn’t that easy, or that stupid. “It looks like the problem today might be your graphics card though.”

At least it was probably salvageable.

“So I’m going to just install a new one for you and hopefully that’ll solve it.” If not, she had a few other things to try. “If it doesn’t, I’ll hook it up and we can pull the files you need for a few days.” She was confident it was fixable though. She hadn’t run into a problem she couldn’t fix yet. But then, she wasn’t exactly a professional when it came to repairs. She was a programmer and a hacker but she knew enough to manage a few fixes.

Jughead nodded. "I tried all the usual things. Took out the battery, used compressed air to clean it all out just to make sure there wasn't any dust or crumbs or anything in there that would be disrupting the power flow. Kept the battery out for a few hours, put it back in, still didn't work. Tried leaving it plugged in over night, that didn't work. For as much as I live on this thing, I don't know anything about how to fix it." Which was probably a pretty big gap in his knowledge that he would need to correct.

He couldn't help but be focused on the work she was doing. It felt a little bit like his life was in her hands, even though Jughead knew that was a gross exaggeration. "Sure, no problem. This is one of those things were cost is no object so whatever it takes to fix it up and or recover my files. I'll just pay it." He didn't splurge on things often, mostly food and Mal, but his laptop was one of those things that he would always take care of.

“I wouldn’t worry about that too much.” She just pulled out a screwdriver to open up the laptop’s casing to do it quickly. “Honestly. Cards will usually run you a couple of hundred dollars but we can figure something reasonable out.”

She’d probably just give him her time for nothing. It wasn’t like she was doing anything else. The shop wasn’t what anyone would call busy and a lot of the time it was just people coming in looking for accessories. It was no big deal and she’d actually appreciate the distraction. The hours could drag by and sometime it was all she could do to not check up on her kids in all her spare time.

“I promise you’ve got nothing to worry about.”

"Honestly, if you can save my paper and my grade, it'll be well worth it." It would put a dent in his savings for sure, but that was what savings were for. Emergencies didn't always have to mean the hospital or death or something extreme. It could just as easily mean the loss of his writing, which was in part a piece of himself. Maybe it wouldn't be such a stretch to categorize it as an emergency. Just instead of a people doctor, he went to a computer doctor.

Jughead watched with a bit of anxiousness as she opened up the laptop's casing. At least she was doing so with a practiced hand. "Please don't take offense to this, but I'm not going to believe you until I have my files in hand." A beat. "Figuratively speaking."

Paige laughed softly, her attention drifting away from him to focus on not screwing anything up causing more problems than she was fixing. "No offence taken. I'd be hovering over my shoulder too."

She was quick about the work, though; it was obvious that she'd done this before at least a couple of times. It was a pretty easy fix though, all things considered, and pretty quickly Paige was closing the computer back up and turning it on again. The display lit up, good as new.

"Alright. Problem solved. Give me a few minutes to update your drivers and you'll be good to go."

He was glad she didn't mind. He was quiet as she worked, glad that she'd clearly done this a few times before, and he muttered a relieved, "Oh thank god," when the screen lit up once more. Jughead looked at her with an incredibly appreciative smile.

"You're either magic or a miracle worker, but you're definitely a life saver. Thank you, thank you, thank you." Jughead was totally happy to pay whatever it cost because she'd fixed it on pretty much the first go. "Also, you're going to be the first person I come to whenever I have computer problems in the future." Hopefully he wouldn't have any, but now he knew exactly who to go to.

"I'm just going to call my girlfriend and let her know and then I'll be right back to pay and everything." Jug didn't even wait for her to respond before he had his phone dialing to call Mal to tell her the good news.
