Who: Hermann Gottlieb and OTA
What: Thinking about things
When: Sunday afternoon
Where: That Book Place
Warnings: TBA
Status: Open/On-going

The wedding had been beautiful, but it had also made Hermann start thinking. Universes were funny things, were so different. Here, Mercy and Clay had gotten to have a beautiful wedding and a beautiful reception with their friends and family around them. And a good portion of the rest of the town, true, but even so. Back home? It'd been him and Vanessa in a Hong Kong hotel room, with Newt as a witness and Marshall Pentecost presiding over it.

He and Vanessa had married in a hurry, when she was several months pregnant, simply because with the way things had been going there'd been a strong possibility that they might never see each other again and simply put? Neither of them wanted to die without being married. Hermann wasn't a romantic, but when it came to Vanessa? She was the one woman who'd ever tried to see that there was more to him than what the rest of the world saw. She was the one who made him different.

There were few things that could distract Hermann like books. The prospect of finding something he didn't know -- rather, having so much he didn't know right at his hands -- was entirely too enjoyable, and the ability to just purchase it and take it home? He was a happy little research nerd. And therefore he was poking around the biography section, just to see where historical figures here and back home were the same and where things might've diverged -- if they were at all the same.

Klara had gone book shopping. She was in a good mood, she'd aced her job interview and people seemed genuinely happy to have a plant worker around who could get results without taking forever. Who knew what they were doing. Klara was, after all, uniquely suited to the job.

She was happy to wander the shelves while she hunted for new books to read. Both fiction and nonfiction, trying to broaden her horizons. An armload of books about plants of the era, fancy gardening books and more were in her arms when she turned the corner and knocked two out of her arms with the corner of a shelf.

She sighed and knelt down to pick them up. "Sorry!" she said as she realized she'd made a bunch of noise next to someone who was browsing.

Hermann was an easily irritated sort of person. He didn't necessarily have a lot of things that got to him -- though sometimes the world was just that plain stupid as a whole -- but when they did? They most certainly did. A teenage girl with an armful of books? Not usually one of them. And certainly not one of them when she actually apologized about being a disruption.

"It's alright," he said, biting back the sigh that usually came with his words. "The important thing is that the books aren't damaged." There's something like humor there, Klara. It's usually just very dry and unreadable. Unless you're Marlene, probably, at this point.

Klara was the epitome of nice. If you yelled at her it was like kicking a puppy. Don't do that. It's bad. She was just too sweet. She smiled at the man before straightening up, books back in arm.

"No! They're fine." Though she checked twice to make sure they weren't damaged at all. A sigh of relief when they were fine. She actually patted the books. They were once plants after all.

Okay, that got a smile out of Hermann. A small one, but a smile nonetheless.

"What are you reading?" he asked, looking at her curiously. As much as people could annoy him -- and that was a considerable amount -- it was harder for them to do so if they were people with an actual interest in learning.

He wasn't entirely an asshole. Just mostly.

Klara could do that to people. Sorry Hermann, you've been Klara'd.

"Plants of this time since they're different from mine, some of the fancy gardening books for design, and I'm looking to find more books." She beamed at him.

"I like learning."

"It's always interesting finding out how different things are between something here and something in your time, isn't it?" An actual smile this time, sympathetic and understanding. "I know the feeling."

Not as much of a difference for him, but he did understand it. He'd been born in 1989, after all, and he was from 2034. The basics of it were the same and that was the whole point of it.

"Yes. I was born when... women weren't educated, the world wasn't nearly as advanced as it is now, and the world wars hadn't even been a thought." she said with a small shrug.

"Now, there is so many new types of plants, and I honestly am not sure I know even half. Or if all the ones I know are even still here." she smiled sadly, "Though I hope they are."

"You're a bit more off in time than I am, then," Hermann said. "I was born... Well, if we're being technical, I'd be turning 30 this year. It's more than a little strange to be looking at it this year."

And made his brain twist a little at the math, possibly the first time his brain had ever twisted at math.

"I'm sure you can find out about the plants, though. Between books and the nursery, you should be able to get an answer." Look, Klara, he's trying to be helpful. Hermann's not very good at it. Marlene can vouch for that.

Klara smiled warmly - "I freaked out my father by reminding him I turned 18 last year. And then reminded him I'm over 100." she laughed softly.

"I should. There is a lot of information to look at. I am excited, though, to start digging really." she smiled brightly, it didn't matter, Hermann, you were trying!

"Well, if that didn't break his brain, I'm not entirely sure what would," Hermann said with what was as close to a laugh as he ever got lately.

"Why do you enjoy plants so much?" he asked curiously. "Not that it's an issue, obviously, your enthusiasm is just rather... adorable."

It's a compliment, coming from him.

She smiled at him, "my father is used to strange things happening around him. He just forgets when I am from."

"Why thank you!" She said cheerfully then looked around for something. Finding a small potted plant in the window she brought it over to him. "Watch!" She stretched her fingers out to the plant, and it grew. Curled around her hand, friendly. Then it blossomed. "I can talk to and control plants"

Very little startled Hermann; when you'd spent close to fifteen years fifteen years dealing with giant otherworldly monsters and the creatures that were sending them to your own, your scale of weirdness was a good bit skewed. So when Klara demonstrated, his only reaction was interested observation.

"That is quite fascinating," he said. "What kind of control do you have? Is it always easy for you, I mean," he added, realizing that the question could have been insulting and invasive, even for him.

Good modification of the question, though, Hermann! Very good job.

Klara smiled at him, "I have excellent control." she said with a warmer smile, she ran her fingers over the edges of the plant softly.'

"It is always easy, I have not had trouble in a long time. New plants, species I've never encountered, might take a little longer to handle, but that's not hard, just requires patience."
