The Settlement smelled delicious - roasted meat and baking bread had been on the fires all day. It was decorated in pine and yew, mistletoe was hung carefully but not for kissing under (though if you do, it was fine) but to represent rebirth. Mistletoe was thought to be able to bring the dead back to life based on the story of Balder being killed by a mistletoe arrow and resurrected by his mother, Frigga's tears, turning the white berries red.
Sigrun had, earlier in the day for those who wished to be there with her, sacrificed a boar to Frey, and its meat was being roasted for food. The rest was set away to be used as they never let anything go to waste. The smaller pines around the settlement were decorated with small items of clothing, food and carvings of the gods - to entice the spirits of the trees to come back in the spring.
As the day came to a close and the sun set beneath the horizon, the yule log was lit. At the center was a large bonfire with the large oak log in the center, decorated with sprigs of fir, holly and yew. Sigrun and Torvi had spent the day carving the runes into it for protection for the year. They'd carefully cut small shavings from the log too and put them in small pouches with other herbs and good luck charms to give to each of those who came. To protect and wish them good luck in the coming year.
Log benches were around the bonfire, and other tables were set up. There was mead and wines for the adults, and other sorts of drinks for the children if they came, and there was plenty of food around for them to eat. While it was mostly centered around traditional Norse fare, there was modern foods and treats spread around for those who didn't like the idea of boar and venison.
