Who: Mason and Adrian
What: Blowing off steam
When: After This
Where: Their apartment
Warnings: TBD
Status: Closed, ongoing

Mason was freaked out, angry, sad, basically upset in pretty much every way as he entered the apartment he shared with Adrian. He slammed the door on his way in, not really caring who heard or what they were doing. It was late afternoon, but he didn't know if Adrian as actually up yet. Sometimes he slept all day. But if he was still asleep, then fuck him too. Mason was pissed the fuck off, and was still seeing red. His friends had lied to him. He was dead, as far as they were concerned. He'd died and no one had bothered to tell him for weeks. Instead they'd just acted all weird, like there was something wrong with him.

Well, fuck that. He was alive here, and he intended to stay that way, and he could do without his so called friends talking down to him like a brain-damaged toddler. Adrian was annoying as fuck, but at least he knew what to to expect from Adrian. Adrian didn't let him down, he was just always the same asshole.

Fuck, he wanted to kill something, or break something.

Thankfully, Adrian was awake, or he would have been quite unhappily awakened when Mason crashed into the house. He came out into the living room, smoking a clove cigarette with his hands covered in paint.

He stared at him for a moment in dark amusement.

“So,” he said. “They told you about Spokane.” It qasn’t Hard to figure out why he was so upset. “Want a drink?”

That, after all, was always Adrian’s answer.

Mason hadn't thought it was possible to feel betrayed by Adrian, but now he did.

"Wait, so you knew too?" It seemed like everyone was in on the joke but him. Only it wasn't a joke, or funny in the least.

"Why didn't you tell me? Why didn't anyone tell me?"

“Why would I tell you?” He asked, raising an eyebrow. “I barely know you. Plus, that’s Rose’s job.”

She was the reason he’d gone to Spokane in the first place, so it was her fault it had all happened.

He hadn’t answered Adrian’s question about wanting a drink so he went to his liquor cabinet anyway and poured him a double shot of whiskey.

“Here,” he said, handing it to him. “It’ll help.”

He had to admit, Adrian had a point. Rose or Eddie definitely should have been the ones to tell him, and they should have done it sooner. He didn't blame them for what had happened. Just for keeping it from him.

Mason took the glass of whiskey and sat down, looking and feeling defeated. He took a big swallow of the whiskey and almost choked. He'd had alcohol at parties before, but never just a straight shot of spirits. It had either been beer, or something mixed.

He coughed a bit, trying to hide just how much his throat was burning so he wouldn't look like too much of a light-weight in front of Adrian.

Still, Adrian wasn’t blind.

He swallowed his amusement, though, and plucked the glass away from him, going into the kitchen and putting in a bit of coke before adding even more whiskey. It would be easier for him to drink with the sweetness cutting it, and he had a feeling that Ian needed to drink a lot.

He carried it back into him and sat down in the couch beside him with a drink of his own.

“Drink enough and it goes away. For a little while.”

Mason took the glass back and took a sip, slower this time. It went down a lot easier and tasted a lot better with the Coke.

"Is that why you drink so much? What are you trying to get away from?" He asked as he continued to sip the whiskey and coke until he started to relax.

That was a very loaded question, and Adrian was quiet for a long moment.

“The darkness,” he said finally, in a distant sort of voice. “The way it could around me, strangles me, tugs at my mind. The intense blackness with the flashes of red; the wounds that Rose gouged into my heart.”

He closed his eyes and finished his drink in one gulp.

“The magic and the misery, the insect eating away my brain...” He trailed off, then finally seemed to snap back to reality.

“The alcohol deadens my connection to the magic.”

Mason wasn't drunk enough yet for any of that to make sense. Except the part about Rose. He could identify all too well with that.

"So Rose jerked you around too?" He'd always assumed that it would have been the other way around. Adrian was the kind of guy who took advantage of girls like Rose, not the other way around. Or at least he'd thought so until now.

"I don't know anything about brain eating insects or magic, but if it can help you get over a girl, I'm all for it." He gulped down his drink as quickly as possible.

"Get over it? I don't know about that," he said, shaking his head slowly. "But it deadens the pain. For a while." Until it came back even stronger when you sobered up. That was a good reason never to be sober.

"She cheated on me," he said, but there was no blame in his words. He was just stating the truth as he saw it. "With Belikov."

"I'm all for deadening the pain." He said as he took another drink.

"She cheated on you? Well, that sucks." It didn't sound like the Rose he knew, but apparently he didn't know the new her at all.

"Still, at least you got to date her for a while. And you got to have a life beside that. For me, it's not just Rose, it's the fact that apparently I die before I get to have much of a life at all."

Adrian really couldn't deny that it sucked. In some ways he wished he'd been there so he could have saved Mason, but they never would have allowed him to go anywhere near Strigoi. He wasn't even a fire user like Christian, and he was pretty sure that Spirit was pretty damned useless against Strigoi. Except, well, that restoring thing that Lissa did. But he'd never tried that.

He just kind of nodded.

"Yeah, dying that young is stupid. And dying like that for Rose?" He almost said that was even stupider, but swallowed the words. "Well, she doesn't deserve it, that's for sure. But here...well, maybe you've got a second chance."

Mason wordlessly held out his now empty glass for a refill. He wasn't nearly drunk enough yet, but he was headed there.

"It was stupid. All of it. It was stupid to go to Spokane in the first place. And it was stupid to go back in." He didn't' blame his friends for that. It had all been his own fault. He didn't even really blame Rose...well maybe just a little.

"Yeah, a second chance. There's so many things I haven't done yet."

Adrian refilled the glass almost automatically. After what Mason had been through today he knew that they weren't even close to being done drinking. The kid needed a lot more than he'd had.

"I guess that's the best way to think of it. Maybe you're dead back home, but you're alive here. Make the best of it."

He took another sip. The more he drank the easier it was going down. Like he was getting used to it. Careful, you don't want to end up like Adrian, he thought. But that was silly. He had a long, long way to go for that.

"Yeah. I can make the best of it. Do things here I never had a chance to do back home." He looked over at Adrian. "Have you ever been to a high school football game?"

Adrian stared at him for a moment at that question. It was definitely one he hadn't expected. At all.

"Um, no." He said. "Never really saw the point in grown men running into each other. Seems a bit...barbaric."

"First, I said high school, so they're not really grown men." He took another drink.

"Second, they have cheerleaders too. I talked to one at speed dating. And I was thinking maybe we should go to a game sometime."

At the mention of cheerleaders, Adrian's mind suddenly changed. He had no interest whatsoever in the game, but when it came to watching pretty girls shaking their...pom poms, he was pretty sure that was something he'd enjoy.

"Hmm. Are the cheerleaders hot?"

He was pretty sure they were, or they wouldn't have been cheerleaders. Wasn't that one of the qualifications?

Technically Mason had only met one of the cheerleaders, but she was hot, and he pretty much made the same assumptions as Adrian regarding that being one of the qualifications. "Yeah. Yeah, of course they are. I mean, they're cheerleaders, right?"

He didn't mention that most of them would be under-age. That might be a problem for Adrian, but it wasn't for him.

Adrian supposed that was a qualification. Cheerleaders had to be hot. To be anything else would just be...inherently wrong. And not something that Adrian wanted to think about. Ugly chearleaders? Gah.

"Sure, I guess we can go if you want to. Maybe you can even get a phone number or two."

Mason kind of already had a cheer leader's phone number...or at least a name to message her on the network. But he didn't want to tell Adrian that.

"Great. I'll find out when the next game is. I think they're usually on Fridays."

"Sounds like a plan," he grinned. "And hey, might as well live your life here, too, right? Which involves getting laid. I might be able to help with that. What kind of girl do you like best?"

He grinned at him, starting to get a bit more intoxicated, hence the drift of conversation.

Mason was getting drunk too, and he kept right on drinking. "I don't need your help to get laid." He said with false bravado. He didn't want Adrian's help, but whether he needed it or not was questionable. He hadn't done that great on his own, after all.

"I don't know." He shrugged. "All kinds, I guess." It was hard to know what kind of girl he liked, because for as long as he'd had an opinion the answer had simply been Rose.

"There were some pretty girls at speed dating."

Adrian just gave him a bit of a look. He didn't believe for a minute that Mason didn't need his help getting girls. He was pretty sure that Mason was a virgin. Mostly sure.

"Are you a virgin?" He asked conversationally. "Because if you are, I think you definitely need my help." He definitely hadn't been a virgin at seventeen himself. Perish the thought.

"Oh, there were?" He asked, raising an eyebrow. "What were their names?"

Mason might be kind of drunk, but not so drunk that he would admit to being a virgin to Adrian of all people.

"No! Of course I'm not. Not that it's any of your business anyway." He definitely didn't need Adrian's help. Adrian might do well with girls, but Mason didn't think he techniques would work for Mason with the kind of girls he was after.

"Kim, Cassie, Molly, Usagi, Sarah." Yeah, that was pretty much all the girls he had talked too.

Adrian looked at him skeptically. He really didn’t believe that but didn’t feel like calling him out on it right now. Let the kid have his delusions, if it made him feel better.

He did snort a little, though. There were only five rounds of speed dating - he’d been there himself - and it seemed Mason had liked all of them.

“Not picky, huh? I can respect that.”

Mason smiled, the liquor making him a bit silly and giggly. "What can I say? They were all pretty. There are a lot of pretty girls here. Of course none of them are like...like her." He was trying to forget Rose, but somehow it always came back to her.

“Don’t think about her, Adrian said darkly. “It’s easier that way. Easier when you don’t have to think of her dark eyes or her long dark hair splayed out on a white pillow...”

He trailed off, then seemed to snap back to reality.

“Nobody’s her. But neither of us have a chance with her, so move on.”

Mason closed his eyes, his mind naturally drifting to Rose when Adrian said not to think about her, thinking about her dark eyes and..."long dark hair on a white pillow." His eyes snapped open. "Wait...did you fuck her? Like for real? Please tell me you didn't fuck her."

“Alas, no,” he said sadly. “Almost.. but not quite.”

He’d come very close, actually, and had drank her blood. But he wasn’t going to mention that to Mason.
