WHO Gibbs & Lydia
WHAT Accidentally running into one another
WHEN Monday afternoon
WHERE In town
WARNINGS TBD will update as needed
STATUS Closed | Incomplete

Gibbs definitely felt out of sorts as he tried to come to terms with the memories of the past week. Being Emily's grandfather instead of her uncle wasn't exactly a stretch, even if it was a very start reminder of the fact that he was old. Sixty was definitely old enough to have a granddaughter back then and it probably would've been alright now, too. Although maybe not a full grown teenager ready to get married. He was so not ready for that at all.

On top of that, he'd been very heavily involved in a relationship with a young woman literally a third of his age. GIbbs had enough hesitancies about being able to have a relationship with Karen and she was closer to half his age. It was harder still because he knew Lydia, had helped Thomas work on their house more than a few times. He almost wished he'd been with the Madame because he didn't know her at all and it would've been easier to simply ignore her and forget what had happened. He wanted to forget about the feelings Lydia had inspired in him after years of getting to know her, even when it had really only been for a week for them right now. It was still a lifetime of memories to sort through.

Enough that it was distracting as he walked through the streets toward the hardware store. Today was a day to work the boat and try to get everything straight in his head, which meant he needed more sanding paper and nails. It was so bizarre, walking down a street that he could see both ways - as it was now and how it had been back then. He was so caught up in it that he lost track of how it was now and nearly walked right into the very person he'd been hoping to avoid.

"I-" He'd been about to apologize, but he caught sight of one of the many marks he'd left on her body and pressed his lips together in a thin line. How the heck were they supposed to behave now with the history they had together. Gibbs didn't really do awkward well.

Waking up in the strip club wasn't something Lydia would have ever imagined doing. But there she was, and with memories of sleeping her way through a good half of the men she knew. Only half of whom she hadn't actually slept with before, so all in all it wasn't so bad. She'd slipped out quickly, quietly, before anyone could say anything and made her way home, jumped right in the shower to wash away the way being paid for sex had made her feel, wound up getting lost in thought until the water turned cold.

Standing in front of the mirror she'd gotten a real, good look at herself. Her neck and chest were covered in hickeys and all at once could only think about how she'd felt letting them be placed there. Special, treasured, wanted and maybe a little bit loved and those were the only things Lydia ever wanted out of everything she had with anyone. She'd never thought she'd get it all while she was a 19th century prostitute from a man she barely knew in reality.

Gibbs was nice enough, had definitely helped around the house and she supposed that she owed him for that, but she'd never thought of him in that way and, getting dressed and heading to school just to try to distract herself, that was the only thing she could think about. So wrapped up in her thoughts that she didn't even see him coming toward her.

She'd given up on trying to cover up and be comfortable at the same time so her marks were on full display, just enough of her cleavage revealed to make it obvious they continued further than was visible, but seeing the way he was looking at her, Lydia wished she had put on a scarf or something. Self-consciously she folded an arm across herself, the other touching her neck.

"I wasn't going to waste the make up covering them up," she explained a little awkwardly. There were too many, it would have used all her good product and all the time she had. "And it's too warm for a turtleneck."

His first thought was that maybe he should buy her the make up to cover herself up if she wanted to do so. There were a lot of them, made out of love from a man that wasn't too far of a stretch from the man he was now. She absolutely wasn't any kind of prostitute though and he had no idea how to even handle this situation but he was going to do his best. Her boyfriend had been sent home a while ago and she had that house to deal with all on her own.

"Do you want to cover them up?" Gibbs would more than understand if she did. He wanted her to cover them up, but at least there'd been a lot of secrecy around who her patron had been so he wasn't worried that it would get out that he'd been the one to give her those marks. "I don't-" He cleared his throat and lowered his voice.

"I don't want to apologize for them. It wouldn't seem right." It didn't feel right to not pull her in his arms and kiss her either, but Gibbs knew those memories were from another life. Still, those marks were made out of love and apologizing for them would just cheapen that. "But I will help you if you want to cover them up." It was only fair, except she'd have to tell him what to get or else how much it would cost so he could give her the money. He really didn't want to hand her money.

There wasn't anything either of them could do about the fact that the Dome had decided they'd been what they had been. They just had to figure out a way to live their lives with that knowledge that at one point in time, he'd loved her.

It felt strange, having him offer to do something to help her if she wanted him to. A part of her that she was sure was all memory touched by the gesture, in a way that made her heart fill with affection for him. A part of her that was much more herself was insulted by the implication that she couldn't take care of it herself.

She met the feeling in the middle and just shook her head. "I don't."

It was surprising how true the answer was, how she was just okay with putting bruises he'd left on display and letting people wonder. Exactly as she would have done if things had continued the way they'd been. "Don't worry. I won't tell anyone it was you." He probably wanted that more than he was worried about her. "No one needs to know where they came from and they'll fade in a couple of days."

There was the part of her that yearned for him to replace the marks when they did fade away, but Lydia was quick to silence that. That wasn't her. As much as being his had made her feel wanted and special, she wasn't and she'd never wanted to be.

Gibbs pressed his lips in a thin line and inclined his head. He wasn't upset by her admission, but it did make things complicated. It felt wrong to not pull her into his arms and give her some kind of comfort now that it would - theoretically anyway - be acceptable to do so in public. But she was right. He didn't want it getting around what he'd done in that time, not because he was ashamed but because none of them had any control over it and it would just make things complicated. He still felt all those things for her and that wasn't necessarily okay.

"Are you alright?" he asked her, voice still soft and certainly full of concern. Gibbs had no clue what was appropriate and what wasn't aside from the obvious, but just turning to walk away seemed like the wrong thing to do. He cleared his throat. "I was headed into town to grab some coffee if you want to join me." It wasn't quite a question or an order, just a fact. She could join him if she wanted because he wasn't ashamed to be seen with her even knowing it'd been him who'd marked her up like that.

It was his way of telling her in his not so clear way that he appreciated that she wouldn't tell anyone but that his concerns weren't the ones she might've thought. This didn't mean he never wanted to talk to her again either. Especially now that she had the house all to herself. She was going to need someone's help in fixing it up and while he knew he wasn't the only guy in town - or even probably the only one she knew - that could do the work, he'd do it just on cost of parts in his free time because that was how he'd done it with Thomas. Gibbs just didn't know how to say that to the person he remembered loving in that other time. He did, at least, know better than to tell her that he'd loved her.

How was she supposed to answer a question like that? No she wasn't okay. She'd been a prostitute who had made the mistake of falling in love with a client no one was allowed to know existed. Still couldn't tell anyone because that wouldn't be fair to him. He had his own life and Lydia didn't want to cause any trouble in it. Gibbs had never done anything but be nice, never given even the slightest indication that he might look at her the way the other version of him had looked at the other version of her and despite that never actually happening, Lydia missed it. She missed the affection in his eyes and lying in his arms and his hands on her skin.

He wasn't helping anything by looking as concerned about her as he did. It only made her want to step into his arms and be comforted by the steady beat of his heart, only made her want to look into his eyes and see affection for her and not even mind that she would only ever wonder if that fondness had become love. That wasn't something she could ask, even if she wanted to know. Even if it would only hurt more if she did.

Lydia smiled, made herself do it, and just nodded. "You can by me a cup of coffee," she allowed as though the offer had actually been made. "I have a little bit of time."

And she couldn't quite make herself walk away from him yet. She wondered how long it would take until she that faded and she could look at him without feeling that affection or wanting more than they had or were ever going to have here.

He was a little worried that she'd tell him to get lost or something - and that was a feeling he'd consider in more depth later on - but when she said he could buy her a cup of coffee, Gibbs just chuckled quietly. If he was thirty years younger, maybe. She reminded him a lot of Shannon in ways that he wasn't going to examine too closely because that would just make things awkward. There was a lot about this that could be awkward if he thought too much about it.

"Diner coffee alright?" he asked as he gestured toward the building in question, or at least the general direction it would be in. He didn't miss the fact that she didn't answer his question, but he wasn't going to push. If all he got was a smile and some coffee, Gibbs was alright with that. He was alright with anything that wasn't an immediate loss of contact, truthfully. They'd never been particularly close here, but after being as close as they were, it would have been hard to adjust to.

"Have you had a chance to check in with your friends?" he inquired once they were on their way, either to the diner or somewhere else.

Diner coffee was definitely not alright, but Lydia didn't have the heart to tell him no. Dumb diners seemed like exactly his kind of thing and she wondered if he'd look more relaxed there than he did now. She wondered if she could catch him looking for a second the way she knew he could, at ease in her company if not with the same affection in his eyes.

It hurt knowing that she was probably never going to see that again, and that again was probably nothing that was rally her and everything that was a her that didn't really exist.

She only nodded that it was, she'd deal with mediocre coffee if it meant she was spending a few more minutes with him, and went in that direction.

"Not yet." She wasn't so sure she wanted to just yet. She'd had sex with all of them, too, was on a pretty good track of potentially ruining all her relationships and weirdly not caring. "I was going to go to school. I have a class this evening I thought I'd prepare for."

As if she hadn't prepared for the whole semester in the first week.

Diner coffee wasn't anything fancy but it was good and Gibbs never really went to Starbucks unless he had no other choice. If Lydia had asked to go somewhere else, he would've, but there was no reason to dwell on that too much. He just continued on next to her as they made their way to the diner.

It surprised him that she had to prep for class. She'd been very intelligent in the old west and with his life mirroring so closely to this one, he wondered if the same was true for her. Gibbs was well aware it wasn't any of his business, much as he found himself curious. It wouldn't hurt to test the waters, at least.

"Which class is it for?" he asked, chancing a glance at her. It seemed better to not push her too much or make it any more awkward than it already was, but he was expecting she'd be going out for some difficult program and breezing through it. Or at least, making it look that easy even though he knew she was putting in the hours to earn it the right way.

It felt weird, that he was asking after something mundane like that, but it at the same time put Lydia at ease. She could be comfortable with him if he was asking questions like that, if he was just a presence in her life and someone she could walk beside and have incredibly mediocre coffee with.

Lydia cast a glance toward him as well, a small smile lifting the corners of her mouth just for a second before she answered. "Multivariate Calculus." Most people didn't even know what that was. She wouldn't mind if he didn't. "It isn't a part of my program, I just do it for fun."

Normal people didn't take high level mathematics courses just for fun, but when it came to numbers, Lydia had never been a normal person.

Gibbs looked at her, simultaneously impressed and a little surprised but not really about what she was studying for. "Just for fun, huh? I guess you're just as brilliant here," he commented, suitably pleased even though he didn't really have any right to be because that wasn't the relationship they had here. It was a slip that he knew he couldn't make again until more time had passed and they could develop that kind of camaraderie for themselves here.

"What other classes are you taking this semester?" he asked, genuinely curious as he held the door to the diner open for her. They were led to Gibbs' usual table and within minutes of them being seated, a mug of black coffee was in front of him.

"Thank you, Millie," he said with a kind smile. "How're you? Is Charlie over that cold yet?"

"He's feeling much better, Mr Gibbs, thank you for asking. We're all good," Millie replied kindly. She turned to Gibbs' company, curious but not rude enough to ask. "What can I get you, ma'am?"

She was even more brilliant than he knew, but Lydia wasn't the sort to boast about it. She was smarter than anyone realized, but played it off like that intelligence wasn't even there.

"Business Development, Organizational Behaviour, International Business Marketing, Contracts and Commercial Law, and Consumer Behaviour." She had a full course load and balanced it easily with a job and a social life. Most people would call one or the other enough. Lydia was never so glad that she kept busier than most as she had been when Thomas had left.

Sitting down at the diner, she felt weirdly out of place, found it weird but kind of charming that Gibbs had taken the time to get to know the people who worked there, to know their names and about their families. Not a lot of people bothered to do that kind of thing. Lydia included.

"Just coffee for me, please," she requested, waited until the woman walked away before asking about it. "You must spend a lot of time here."

He was beginning to sense that she was even more brilliant than he'd initially thought give her course load. The classes she listed off didn't give him any sense of what her major was but it seemed to be logical that she was taking at least two majors. How she managed it all, plus the job he knew she had at Verdant thanks to his conversations with Thomas. Gibbs wondered if she even put any time aside for sleep and self case, but he didn't really feel like it was his place to ask.

"Every day, just about," he agreed. "It's a good place, with good food and good people. Coffee's as good as home. Whole place kind of reminds me of home." It was familiar and comforting and even though it was still a diner, that was more than everything he needed. "Good for a place to think for a little while, too." GIbbs did a lot of thinking most of the time and having a place that et him do that was important. Most of the time he'd read the newspaper while enjoying his coffee, but today he had company.

"It helps when things get weird," Gibbs admitted, though he wasn't sure if that was going to be particularly helpful for her or not. He hoped it would be.

It wasn't particularly helpful to her. Lydia didn't feel any particular sort of comfort in the diner, it wasn't somewhere she could just go to think about the way things were. It didn't remind her of home at all, nowhere in Madison Valley really did and the only place she'd really had had lost that when Thomas had gone. She felt lost now.

But being with Gibbs helped a little, just this once, and she knew that wasn't her own voice.

"No wonder you spend a lot of time here," was what she chose to say with a smile that was definitely amused. "Things are weird around here a lot." That wasn't going to change any time soon. She almost hoped it didn't. Sometimes, rare as it was but enough to make her want to keep experiencing it, things weren't a bad kind of weird. The most recent one, the one that had brought them together like this, had left her feeling very loved and cared for and important. That was all she really wanted from anyone.

Gibbs chuckled at her observation. "Sure are," he replied. It had been relatively quiet after the countdown clock and the mass disappearances and he'd hoped that they'd get a reprieve through the end of the year. They had been through more than enough this year as a collective whole and even though he knew it was pointless, he still remained hopeful.

"But it's worth it if I get to be here for my niece. I have to admit, it wasn't so bad thinking she was my granddaughter." There were a lot of things about the old west version of his life that he hadn't minded and the young woman sitting across from him was definitely one such part. "I hope there were some parts of that life that were enjoyable to you." Not meaning him, of course. Gibbs assumed that was one of the parts that she didn't enjoy.

His assumption would be very, very wrong. But Lydia wasn't stupid enough to stay it.

"There were," she assured him with a soft smile, a pointed look. She wouldn't say it but feelings that weren't really hers definitely got the better of her and were making sure he knew anyway. She hadn't hated her job or anything like that, had been active and popular and well paid, had a sort of independence that a lot of women probably hadn't had. She'd enjoyed herself a lot of the time, but her time with him had been the most so. It was what was really sticking with her as the hours went on.

"I'm glad you kept your family there, though. I'm sure it was good for her to have you."

It surprised him a little to hear the words she didn’t say, but he let it go with only a slightly raised eyebrow for a moment. There was no use in discussing that, since nothing could come of the connection they had shared in another life. Gibbs still appreciated the assurance all the same.

"It was," he agreed. Gibbs appreciated when they ended up staying together because that kind of stability was good for him. As much as he wanted to say it was good for Em, too, it was mostly for his sake. He took a sip of his coffee then and just sort of looked at her for a few long moments. It was probably weird but he was used to doing this sort of thing from even before the wild west.

"How are things at the house?"

Changing the subject was probably supposed to distract her from the past, but it did so only by making Lydia remember that she was alone in her house now. She had a whole house full of empty rooms she was responsible for.

"Good." There was a definite sadness in her eyes though. "Nothing's fallen apart yet." Yet. She didn't know what she was going to do if it did. Thomas had always been the one to take care of the house stuff. She'd just worried about making it affordable and making it look nice when the work was done. She'd never taken the responsibility for updating or fixing or anything like that. Those were not skills she had and she was perfectly comfortable admitting that.

She knew if she really needed it she could call Gibbs for help, that he'd come even if he didn't feel anything for her. He was a good man like that. But with things between the what they were at the moment, and not knowing how long that would last, she couldn't just ask.

Yet was a telling word. Gibbs worried about the 'yet' even though he knew he wasn't responsible for that 'yet'. It was just the lingering feelings and experiences from that other life that made his natural inclination to help that much stronger.

"Well, when yet comes around and you need another set of hands, just give a holler." It was the least he could do considering he'd helped with the house for so long already. He probably knew it better than her and about what needed to get done to keep the refurbishments going.

He finished off his cup of coffee - there wasn't much left - and set it off to the side to let Millie know he didn't need a refill. He wasn't going to try to prolong this even though that part of him wanted to. Gibbs knew they each had their parts to play and it was either going to end well or it wouldn't. He hoped it would end up alright.

Lydia only nodded. She wanted to ask him to stay a while longer, to put off going back to what was normal and what was allowed, but at the same time she knew she didn't really. She and Gibbs weren't close, they weren't friends, they barely even knew each other. Everything she felt for him right then was left from a different time and a different them.

In a few days, things would be back to normal for them and they wouldn't need to see each other in more than passing. They wouldn't want to.

She really hoped that was the way things were going to go, anyway. It made sense that they would. She wasn't interested in being in love with anyone right now, much less someone that much older than she was. There was older men and then there was old enough to be her father.
