A week alone, camping with Lucas in the backyard at her house, wasn’t something Riley had ever thought she would be doing. She’d never for a second considered that she would be spending any time at all without a parent or guardian to look after her, or that there would ever come a day when Maya wasn’t by her side. And she knew for an absolute fact that no matter what Lucas was there for her. That didn’t make anything any easier, just made it bearable. She could wait for the end.
They had a little campfire, and a blanket draped across her shoulders even though it was warm enough without it. She felt almost as if she could forget why they were out there, that they were just waiting for the end of Madison Valley and to go back to their real lives. She could almost forget about all things, all the experiences and growing up, that she was going to be losing with this place. Two years of living, just gone, and she remembered home still. She remembered that she and Lucas were only good friends.
That broke her heart. She loved him now. She wanted to be his girlfriend for however long she got to be and she didn’t want to forget what it felt like to sit with him or to hold his hand or to kiss him and to know that she could do it whenever she wanted.
She turned to him suddenly, decided that if she was losing everything with him there was no reason not to take advantage of still being together for now, didn’t say anything at all, just tilted her face up to kiss him.
