Who: Kurt and Elphaba, with Liir
What: Daily life
Where: Their place
When: Afternoon/Evening
Warnings: Elphie is a terrible mother
Status: Closed

Living with Kurt worked out well for Elphaba. He was more than willing to take care of Liir, to play with him, and keep him out of Elphaba's hair. Elphaba could almost convince herself she didn't have a child at all, that the boy belonged to Kurt and Kurt was entirely responsible for his care.

She knew, deep down, that wasn't true. Liir was Fiyero's son just as he was hers. Some part of her was grateful for that, for the link, for the connection, for the part of Fiyero that lived on. The rest of her knew she didn't deserve it. She was responsible for Fiyero's death, he never would ahve been killed if not for his involvement with her.

It wasn't fair that she was left with a child, a helpless baby boy. She had no idea how to relate to him, how to nurture and care for him as he deserved. Kurt was a blessing, then. Someone who embraced the daily struggles of raising a child. And Elphaba was more than happy to let him take the reigns where that was concerned.

"I'm going to go into town," she told him. She completely by passed Liir. The eleven month old looked up at her, chattering away as babies tended to do, making more sounds than words. "Do you need anything?"

Kurt really didn't mind helping Elphaba with Liir. He understood that she didn't feel motherly toward the child. Kurt's own mother didn't feel maternal toward the blue mutant, so he understood. He didn't blame Elphaba (or Raven, for that matter). But he knew that Liir was not his child, and that the baby boy was likely confused as to why the woman would not pay much attention to him.

He looked up when he heard Elphaba speak, and he considered his next words. He didn't want to make it seem like he didn't want to help with Liir any longer, but Elphaba was the child's mother. Kurt'd had nothing to do with Liir's conception, but he was still being more of a parent to the child than his own parent.

"Maybe Liir and I can come with you? He would probably like to get out for a while."

"I won't object if you want to take him out." Which was not saying she wanted them to go with her. She didn't. She'd prefer to go out on her own, without the hassle and fuss of Liir being there.

Kurt was far better at dealing with the baby than she was. She was quite capable of looking right past the boy, as if he wasn't even there. His chattering didn't call her attention, if anything it turned her away from him.

"But regardless I'm going into town. And you didn't answer the question. Do you need anything?"

Kurt sighed softly at her words. He truly didn't mind helping her with Liir, he just wished that she would take more of a role in raising Liir. The child wasn't Kurt's, he was Elphaba's. And Kurt felt that Elphaba at least needed to help.

"Diapers. Liir needs diapers," he said.

He studied the green woman for a moment, as though trying to figure out what to say, and how to say it. "He might like it if you spent a bit of time with him," he started. He knew it had to be confusing for the eleven month old. Liir likely didn't understand.

"He's much happier with you," Elphaba said. It was an observation, as well as an avoidance. "You make him laugh." Elphaba did not have that ability, as far as she was concerned.

"I've the opposite effect. He tends to be easily upset with me." Which likely had to do with her awkwardness where he was concerned, of course. Elphaba was resistant to working on that, though. it was easier for her to keep her distance, to keep the boy, Fiyero's child, at arm's length.

Kurt made it easy for her to do just that.

"He's happy with me, yes, but he knows you're his mother. It might confuse the boy if he sees his mother continually avoid him." Luckily Kurt had not grown up with his mother around, so he didn't have the confusion of why his mother was avoiding him. He didn't have her around, so he hadn't thought of her much.

He looked down at Liir, and made a face at the boy, in an attempt to brighten him up a bit. He grinned when the boy smiled at him.

"Is there any particular reason why you don't really want to spend time with Liir?"

Elphaba sighed. She glanced at Liir, then back to Kurt. "He looks like his father." Without Fiyero's tribal markings, of course. But still. He barely resembled Elphaba at all, but she could see Fiyero in every etching of his chubby little face.

"Fiyero is dead because of me. Because of his association with me." The politics were confusing and moot now. But the memory of it, the hard truth weighed heavy on Elphaba's soul. Liir was a reminder of all that she had lost.

Elphaba's words shed more light onto the situation. Liir's father had died, and Liir reminded Elphaba of his father. So she was pulling away from the boy, pulling away from the memories of Fiyero. That was understandable, he totally got what she was doing. But that didn't mean that it was the right thing to do.

He sighed softly, "I understand, Elphaba. Really I do. But Liir is innocent in all this. He didn't kill Fiyero, right? And maybe having Liir around.... maybe the memories don't always have to be bad. Maybe instead of focusing on the fact that his father died, try and focus on the good times you had with him instead?"

He knew that it wasn't always easy, but it might be for the best. Especially for Liir.
