Who: Maya, Riley, Lucas, Shawn
What: Big Trouble
Where: The GMW house
When: New Years Eve morning
Warnings: The kids are in trouble
Status: Closed

Maya didn't really remember much after midnight. Did she even remember midnight? She kind of remembered canons booming and confetti flying all over the place. She was pretty sure some of it landed on Briar's face, and she'd tried to lick it off him.

Actually, she'd done the same thing to Lucas. And she remembered Riley freaking out, but she couldn't remember if it was because of the confetti or something else. And then Lucas was throwing her over his shoulder and carrying her out to his truck. She knew there had to be something missing, but damned if she could remember what it was. Her head hurt too bad, and she gave up trying to figure it out.

Oh right. They were taking her home. She felt a bubble of panic rise in her throat, and then the truck lurched to a stop in the driveway, and she knew she was going to hurl. There was no hope for it, she didn't even try to hold it back or stop if from happening.

She wiped her hand across her mouth. "Augh. Sorry, Huck," she said, though it was slurred and probably mostly unintelligible.

Lucas really hoped that they'd be able to get Maya inside without being too loud so that no one would get into trouble. He was even careful not to slam his door shut or anything as he hurried over to help Riley with Maya. Unfortunately, he definitely noticed Mr Hunter standing in the front door and he knew they were totally in so much trouble. Hopefully he could help make sure they didn't get into as much trouble.

He turned his attention back to Maya, who'd just booped Riley on the nose. Oh no. "Maya," he hissed. "Shh, just. It's your dad." It would be better for all of them if she did her best to not act as drunk as she was. Oh, this was very, very bad. "I'm sorry, Riley." He should've done a better job of looking after Maya too, if only so that they wouldn't get into too much trouble.

"Look, I'll- I'll tell him it's my fault. That I got Maya the wrong drink by accident." If they got their story straight, maybe it would actually work. Mr Hunter already hated him, so it probably wouldn't hurt if he hated him about this, too. And it wouldn't hurt Maya's relationship with her dad too badly either.

The moment Riley saw the light from the house as the door opened, a look of horror struck her face. They were caught. Getting in quietly was definitely impossible and Maya was going to be in so much trouble all because Riley had been too engrossed in Lucas to remember to be a good friend. It was all her fault. She looked at Lucas, torn between that same horror and sadness. "You can't," she insisted. "We can't lie." Lying was bad and they'd been bad enough. "It's not your fault."

It was hers. It was Maya's own. "Help me take her inside?" she requested softly, offering her giggling best friend a smile. "Let's go to bed, Maya. It's really late."

The few feet to Uncle Shawn felt like forever.

By the time they got to the door, Shawn knew that Maya was drunk. The other two didn't seem to be, but when he held the door open for them, he let the girls go inside and stopped Lucas. If the kid was drinking and then driving around his daughter and niece, there would be even more hell to pay.

"Open your mouth," he said, leaning in close so he could smell Lucas's breath. After a moment, he was satisfied that he wasn't picking up the scent of alcohol at all. "You can go home."

Even drunk, Maya knew there was no way Riley would go along with a lie. She giggled at Lucas' optimism. She was too drunk to realise or even care about the seriousness of the situation, even though her dad was striking an imposing figure at the front door.

She stumbled, because just putting one foot in front of the other was a major challenge. But Riley and Huckleberry were there to keep her moving forward. "Hi, Dad!" she hollared, and giggled again.

Lucas frowned, but he didn't push the issue with Riley. Instead, he helped her get Maya to the front door and did exactly what Mr Hunter asked. He hadn't had a single drop of alcohol and hadn't had anything spilled on him so he knew he didn't smell like anything he wasn't supposed to smell like.

"It's not her fault," he said earnestly, ignoring the order to go home for the moment. "She didn't mean to." Lucas didn't know if that was true or not, but if he could help, he would try. He looked at Riley and Maya over Mr Hunter's shoulder and then looked back at the older man. He really wanted to at least say goodbye to Riley but he wasn't sure if Mr Hunter would let him inside or not. Probably not since Maya was sort of unrepentantly drunk.

"I um. Happy New Year, Mr Hunter." Lucas would just leave so he didn't make anything worse. "Bye Riley, bye Maya," he added, not shouting so as not to wake anyone else up. It took one last look before he turned away and headed back to his car. He'd already missed his own curfew but hopefully his parents wouldn't be too mad.

Riley turned immediately, attention drawn away from Maya just for a second. "Lucas...."

She hadn't wanted him to have to go so soon, but she knew that he was just going to be in more trouble if he stayed. She really didn't want that but Lucas had been really good, really nice, and put himself in that situation to get into trouble for her and for Maya. She wanted to at least thank him.

She stopped herself from just asking if he could stay, though, instead helping Maya to sit down on the couch and looking to her uncle. "Sorry, Uncle Shawn."

Shawn felt bad for a split second that he sent Lucas away so quickly and didn't give Riley a chance to say goodnight, but with how very obviously drunk Maya was, that moment of guilt passed very quickly. In all honesty, Lucas should probably be glad that Shawn sent him home.

Once the girls were settled on the couch, he sighed. It wasn't like he hadn't done plenty of stupid shit in his life. Part of him wanted to wake up Liz to help him deal with this though he knew she needed her rest since she had to work tomorrow. Or later today.

"Were you drinking, Riley?" he asked, waiting a few moments after her apology to speak. He had a feeling that Riley was innocent in this whole thing and was just trying to help her best friend. Mostly because that's exactly what Cory would do. "Maya, I'm disappointed in you."

Maya leaned against Riley, one hand bent up and rubbing at Riley's long silky hair. "It's so pretty," she murmured, then realised Shawn was talking to her. She looked up at him, her eyes bright and unable to really focus.

"But daaaaaaad," Maya protested. "I was just," she paused for a moment, hiccuped and burped, which resulted in a giggle. "I was just having fun!" she said with an overly exaggerated bubbly voice. She knew she was in trouble, but she was so far gone on the alcohol that she just really didn't even care. She wanted to be happy, so she was going to be happy, damn it.

Riley just let Maya pet her hair, patting her friend's leg absently. She knew she should have done a better job protecting her, should have stopped her, reminded her that she was a good kid and that that wasn't the kind of thing she should be doing. But Riley had been distracted, had been having a good time just being with Lucas, and she hadn't stepped in fast enough.

This was all her fault.

Looking at her uncle with wide, horrified eyes, she just shook her head, not even realizing that it probably dislodged Maya's hand. "I didn't," she insisted. "I wouldn't. But I...I didn't take care of Maya."

That was worse.

"It's not your fault, Riley," he assured her gently. Shawn understood that she felt responsible for keeping Maya out of trouble, it was the same dynamic he and Cory had when they were younger, but he would never hold her accountable for his daughter's decisions.

He realized there was no point in even trying to have a conversation with Maya right now. She was going to be hurting tomorrow morning and that might be punishment enough. "Go to bed," he said. "Maya, drink some water first."

Maya jumped up to her feet in an awkward, over exaggerated leap. She stumbled, but caught herself on Shawn's shoulder before she pitched forward. She giggled as she pulled herself to standing, using Shawn's shoulder as leverage.

"Aye, aye, Cap'n," she said, her hand moving to salute him before she marched toward the kitchen to get the water she'd been told to drink. She made it to the kitchen and opened the fridge. The light came on, which intrigued her in her inebriated state. She closed the door slowly, just until the light went off, then jerked it open again, seemingly fascinated by the magic of the light in the fridge.

Riley knew she should go right to bed, but she followed Maya instead, sighing when she started playing with the fridge door. That wasn't like Maya at all. That was more like something Riley would do. Gently she just stepped in and took over, getting the glass of water for Maya and placing it in her hand with another glance to Shawn.

"I'm really sorry," she repeated. Even if Uncle Shawn had said it wasn't her fault, it was. She and Maya looked out for each other and she'd failed. "C'mon Maya. You can sleep over with me, okay? Let's go to bed."

"Make sure you have some painkillers handy," Shawn advised. "And keep a trash can next to the bed." With as drunk as Maya was, he wouldn't be surprised if both things were necessary. He was glad that Riley was willing to take care of Maya though. If it were up to him, he wouldn't be quite so gentle.

And when she was hungover tomorrow, he was going to tell Liz she wasn't allowed to heal her. Let her suffer the consequences of her actions.

Maya took the water from Riley and gulped it. She made a face at it, and held the glass out and tipped it over because she was inspecting it and didn't really like what she saw. Or tasted. "Gross."

She had enough sense even drunk as she was, to put the glass on the counter. She lacked the coordination to set it down, though, and it fell on its side spilling the rest of the water on the counter.

Maya didn't seem to care. "Let's go to bed, Riley!" she said, still giddy.

Without missing a beat Riley grabbed a towel and mopped up the water, placed the glass in the sink where it belonged. She just smiled weakly, not really sure what to do except take Maya to bed. So she took her friend by the hand and pulled her gently toward the stairs.

"Goodnight, Uncle Shawn," she said, worry and regret clear in her voice. She hadn't stopped this from happening but she'd definitely make sure to take care of Maya now and in the morning.

And she'd have to find a way to make it up to Lucas too.
