Thor had wanted to tell Ella his news, and to check on her, and so had invited her to lunch, and met her there, smiling as he did so. He wanted to see how his good friend was doing, and he hoped she was finding her life turning better here.
He found the cafe where he was supposed to meet her, and looked around for her, hopeful to see her. He felt jittery, hopeful, and bouncy.
***
Ella was equally excited to talk to Thor, and for her son to spend more time with such a wonderful role model, so she made sure they both looked their best before heading over to the cafe she’d promised to meet him at. The move would come in time, hopefully by Thanksgiving the little house would be ready. She was so looking forward to being closer to the Pack and having her own space where she could make entirely new memories. She wasn’t so scared anymore.
She arrived at the cafe shortly after Thor did and she was beaming as she caught sight of him. “Hello!” Ella greeted, waving when she was within sight but not within reach. Maximilian was safely ensconced in his stroller, which she stopped just in front of Thor to be able to give the man a half hug so as not to let go of the stroller. She worried too much in that way.
“It’s so lovely to see you. You’re positively beaming! What has youso happy?” Ella, in turn, was beaming just as much and now that was because he was so happy.
***
Thor rose and moved to hug Ella and also watched the stroller. “It is good to see you too, dear one.” He kissed her cheek and smiled warmly. “How are you and your little one?”
At her words, he flushed and shook his head. “You are a perceptive person, my dear friend. I have found someone again. Someone I am dating.”
***
Ella’s cheeks colored slightly at his kiss, more so because she wasn’t used to such signs of affection from someone not her husband. She appreciated it though, especially because of how close she felt to Thor.
“We’re both doing quite well,” she promised him. Ella parked the stroller carefully next to their table so it would be out of the way from everyone else as much as possible. She had been about to unbuckle Max when Thor admitted he was seeing someone. “Oh! How wonderful!” Ella was so excited for him that she gave him another hug.
“I’m so happy for you, my friend. You deserve such love in your life.” She believed that so sincerely because it was the best kind of love. Ella missed her husband so much more in that moment, but it only showed briefly before she focused again on his happiness.
“You must tell me all about her! What are her favorite treats? I would bake something for her, if that’s alright?”
***
Thor smiled softly. Hugging her, he grinned. “Thank you, Ella. You are a good person and a wonderful person.”
He hugged her close and just kept her close, smiling.
“She is smart, and passionate, works at and owns a icee shoppe, and she has been one of my closest friends since I arrived.”
He chuckled. “As for that, she likes kettle corn and M&Ms and cinnamon sugar almonds.”
***
Ella was so happy for Thor. He had lost so many people to the dome and she had seen the pain he experienced. Seeing him so happy was uplifting. “Love both of a close friendship is one that is meant to last,” she replied warmly. Thor deserves every bit of happiness he could find in the dome, and she would continue to hope and pray that his lover would not be taken from him again.
“I will make something special for her,” Ella promised. Maximilian started to wriggle in his stroller so she stepped away to unbuckle him and pull him into her arms. “You’re very happy for your Uncle Thor, aren’t you, Maximilian?” She smiled up at Thor.
“We actually have some news of our own to share,” she admitted happily.
***
“I sincerely hope so, dear one. I sincerely hope so.” He had not been sure, and he was still not sure, all would last, or that the dome would behave. But he was trying to live in hope, not fear. And so he smiled to Ella and hugged her again, grinning, and gently tapped Maximilian's nose.
“Hello, little one.” He smiled to the baby, and then to Ella again.
“Oh yes? What is it?”
***
"The Pack have offered us a home on their property," Ella shared, obviously excited for the prospect. "Jeremy has already started construction of a small home for Maximilian and I to share on the other side of their property, similar to his granddaughter's home." She had talked it over with Colonel Sheppard and felt much better about accepting Jeremy's offer. Having a place of their own would go a long way in relieving the feeling she had lately of being a burden.
"I haven't gone back to the house my husband and I shared since he left," she admitted, softening a bit. Ella didn't like remembering that, but it was the truth. "I couldn't bear to return there and I know as much as I love staying at the Farm House, I couldn't impose myself and Maximilian on them for very much longer."
***
“Truly? That is fantastic! It is lovely to hear that they are welcoming you into their home area. If I can help at all, please let me know.” he smiled softly and kissed her cheek again. She was beloved and important, and he was glad to hear she was being taken care of.
“It’s okay to make those choices, and to choose where to go next. In truth, I understand. Before…” He quieted for a moment, then went on. “Before she was taken, Pamela and I were planning on moving in together. She had bought a place and all. And then… she was gone. But had I moved in, I think that I, too, would not have wanted to go back to my old home.”
He smiled softly at her. “Moving forward is what we must do, I think.”
***
Ella was so pleased that he understood. He always did seem to know and she cared for him a great deal because of all he had done for her. She was reminded of the son they might have in some future and she wasn’t surprised. Thor was a good man and he would be a wonderful father.
“I would certainly appreciate your help when I am moving. I will need to go shopping for furniture and other things to make the new house my Home, but I am looking forward to that. As you say, it is the only thing we can do.” Ella was also glad that she wasn’t being judged for it, that he thought her selfish or wasteful.
“And of course I would love to have you over for lunch or dinner or tea, whenever I am settled enough to host you.”
***
He felt blessed by her continued friendship, and the warmth with which she gave to him so easily, so freely. It felt, when he was with her, like he was with family, and more, and he liked that feeling. He hugged her again, because he could, and because she was an amazing person.
“I will be glad to help at any time. Including babysitting your little one.” he nodded.
“And I may have you over to mine, on occasion.”
***
Ella hugged him back with a laugh and then took her seat across from him, her son in her lap. "I'm certain Maximilian would never pass up quality time with his Uncle Thor," she replied warmly. She would certainly trust him with her son.
"Might I be allowed to meet your new girlfriend?" she asked, hopeful and not wanting to be intrusive all at the same time. She really did just want what was best for Thor and if this new woman made him happy, Ella wanted to meet her.
***
With a warm smile, he nodded to her and to Max. “It will be my pleasure to be in both your lives, so long as you want me there.” He wanted to be part of their lives and make them better. As well as he could, in fact.
At her question, he nodded. “Of course. I’ll talk to her and we can arrange a day for you two to meet.’ He nodded again. “I cannot wait to introduce you. She had been a friend to me almost as long as you.”
***
"That will be a long time," she promised him easily. Thor was a wonderful man and she was very lucky to have him in her life and in Maximilian's life. Ella was pleased that she would be able to meet the woman who made him so happy.
The waitress came to take their orders and Ella enjoyed being out with her son. It happened so rarely because she was being careful about exposing him to too much too soon, but this was perfectly safe.
"How has your employment been going? Well too, I hope?"
***
“I hope so, and I will be glad of it. You and your kin will be and are precious to me. So long as I live, you will be welcome in my home.” He kissed her cheek again and smiled. He gave his order, and watched them both and smiled warmly. Gently touched Maximilian's forehead, he nodded.
“It has been going okay. I am unsure what I will do next. Open a brewery of my own or perhaps move onto something new. All I do know is that I am taking my time, doing things one step at a time.”
***
Ella appreciated how gentle Thor was with her son, and how dedicated his care for them was. She was very lucky indeed to have him in her life.
“You will find something that calls to you,” she promised. That would make the time spent at said job more enjoyable and less like a chore. Ella missed working at the tea house, but not enough to pull her away from her son. Plus, she had limited expenses at the moment and money saved from the shared account she had with Kit. “When you do, I will be pleased to support you in your venture.”
***
Thor smiled softly. “Ella, dear one. You are amazing.” He smiled softly and hugged her close. As he released her, he nodded. “No matter what I do, I will always have you as a part of my life. Dear heart.” He nodded.
He gently tapped her nose.
“Thank you for giving me hope, dear one, in so many darker hours.”
***
Ella was always happy to hug and be hugged by Thor. She returned his hug as tightly as she could with her son between them. "You are very welcome," she replied warmly. "It is the least I can do. I have not forgotten all you did in trying to find myself, Molly and Sara when we were kidnapped."
It wasn't something she liked speaking of very much at all, but it was the truth and Ella firmly believed that she owed him her life. It was not a debt so easily repaid.
***
Thor smiled softly. “You are a good and kind friend, and I am glad to know you. And I am glad to have helped at all.” He gently smiled.
“We should have some time to get together and read stories to Maximilian.” He nodded. “I am told it helps children want to read faster.’
***
The waitress came with their food and Ella thanked her before she walked away. Then she turned to her friend once more. "I think that would be a lovely way to spend time together," she replied warmly. "Whenever you wish, we would love to have you over. I am certain Wanda and Colonel Sheppard wouldn't mind at all, if you were to visit before Maximilian and I move to our new home."
She leaned against his impressive bicep for a moment longer, just relishing the closeness, before she pulled away. "Shall we eat?"
***
Thor nodded as he smiled to her. “Good. Then we shall do that.” He felt his spirits soar and reached eagerly for his food.
“We shall.” And so they did.
