It had been about two weeks since Amaar had turned up in this place and one thing had become very clear to him. For the first time in his life he was the only Muslim around. It was a strange feeling. He hadn’t always been devout, but he’d always had a community and a mosque to attend on Fridays at least and he’d always had some sort of safety net behind him when he had to face the hatred of the world. All that hate was just as bad but harder to withstand, and he’d just held on tighter to his faith, finding his footing before worrying about anything like settling in.
But it had been two weeks and a thousand dollars only went so far. It was time to look for work. No community and no mosque meant no one to be an imam for, so the next logical option was to fall back on what he’d been before.
There a couple law offices around town, but he chose to go to the one run by others who had been...kidnapped. They seemed a lot more likely to accept that he’d passed the bar on his word. He knew it was a long shot but it couldn’t hurt to try and if it didn’t work out he’d figure out something else.
Letting himself in the front door he stopped and took a look around. It was nothing like his father’s firm back in Toronto. It was small, quaint. It was very small town and it was very the man he was now.
