Chloe had been here almost an entire weekend now. She'd arrived on Saturday, and now it was Monday morning and she was in no way closer to finding a way back to LA. She didn't want to admit that she was scared, but when it came down to it, that's what she was. Scared because she didn't know how she'd gotten here and nothing she'd been told made any sense at all. Scared because she's lost control and her life was all about holding tight reins in her control and forcing her life to work despite the odds, and all the adversity she'd been through. If she lost that control, what would happen to her here? Would she lose her mind? Would she become her mother? Both seemed equally unappealing to her.
So she refused to accept what she'd been told. There was a rational, boring answer. There had to be. There was a simple way to get home, even though it wasn't obvious at the moment. She had to cling to that, at least for now. She had to.
She was up before eight and out on the streets of Madison Valley, retracing the path she'd taken more than once. Down one side of the street, then up the other, looking for something - anything - out of the ordinary that might be some sort of clue of how to get back home.
And of course, there was nothing. Every step had her losing hope little by little, and when she reached Hinkles she didn't have the willpower to avoid the greasy smells within. She took a seat in a booth, defeated, and ordered three burgers and the biggest chocolate milkshake they had. If she couldn't find comfort in a chocolate milkshake, then she was already too far gone.
