Bucky was usually a very light sleeper, so when the door to his and Kara's bedroom opened ever so slowly and with a fair bit of fumbling, he noticed. He turned his head to watch as a small child let herself in their room and went right to his side of the bed.
"Morning Daddy!" she greeted, lifting her arms up to indicate she wanted to join them on the bed. Bucky just blinked at her for a moment, taking in the shape of her face, the color of her eyes, and the other features that would back up her statement that she was his child. There was enough evidence there, which also pointed to Kara being her mother, that Bucky shifted to sit up more fully so he could give in to her demand.
It was a good thing he and Kara were both dressed, even if he did only have a tank top and sweats on. The little girl didn't seem to mind the metal at all as she squirmed out of his grasp so she could settle in between him and Kara.
"Can we have waffles today?"
Bucky just blinked at her again and nudged Kara. "Uh huh," he replied, really not sure of what was going on.
***
Kara mumbled a protest when she heard voices and Bucky nudged her. It was too early to be awake. After a moment, it penetrated the morning fog that she heard a small child’s voice and that the small child in question called Bucky ‘daddy’.
That was enough to wake her fully and she rolled over to stare at the small girl who was settled between them. She was glad that she wore a big nightshirt to bed in case she needed a middle of the night bathroom trip.
“Um, hi,” she said, unsure what was happening right now.
***
"Morning Mommy!" the little girl said as she snuggled closer to Kara. Bucky was glad that he'd at least pieced that together. Bucky just settled in to lay down next to their daughter so they were both sort of angled facing her and all three of them were laying down. He put his arm across the little girl so that his hand could rest on Kara's side. This was a very weird situation.
"I think we could do waffles, but that's usually for special occasions," he told his daughter, figuring that playing along was the best course of action. "We could probably make an exception though." The little girl giggled and reached up to bop him playfully on the nose.
"You say that all the time!" she replied, smiling so wide that Bucky was happy just knowing that his kid was that happy. "Mommy, isn't today a special okay shun? Since Molly's home?"
***
As far as Kara was concerned, waffles should be an everyday food, but she was willing to agree that today was a special occasion. Mostly because of the tiny girl in bed with them. “Yes, definitely,” she agreed. “How do you know that Molly’s home?”
It was good that she knew Molly. That meant that their odd little family was still together in some version of the future. Although it was a little surprising that there was a future where she and Bucky had a child. The girl’s features clearly reflected both of them, but Clark told her that Krypontians couldn’t procreate with humans. Did that mean that it was possible she was pregnant? No, they would have figured that out when she got the IUD just in case.
***
"She was in my room! She only sleeps over when there's a party," the little girl explained, even though she very clearly thought it was silly that they were even asking. "Is it for Daddy's birthday! It's the biggest special okay shun sides Uncle Steeeeve's birthday," she declared, drawing Steve's name out. That was kind of cute.
Bucky raised his eyebrows though, because his birthday had been last month. The only thing coming up that was a 'big occasion' was Easter. That explained a little, but not much. He very gently shifted to cover the little girl's ears and spoke softly, knowing Kara would pick it up easily. "So she's from our future." The little girl in question seemed content, like this sort of thing wasn't entirely out of the norm. "What should we do?"
***
Kara shrugged at Bucky’s question. Obviously this was more Madison Valley weirdness and she figured there wasn’t really anything to do except take care of their daughter. “Does she usually sleep over with you?” Kara asked. If this little girl was from seven years in the future, it made sense that Molly didn’t live there anymore. She’d be in her early 20s then.
The biggest issue right now was that they didn’t know the girl’s name. She wasn’t sure how to figure that one out without telling her that she was in the past. And she seemed like she might be too young to understand that.
***
Bucky uncovered the little girl's ears after Kara shrugged, so when the question came about sleepovers, the little girl nodded excitedly. "Sometimes! But sometimes I stay with you! You know that!"
"We know a lot of things, sweetheart," he countered, tickling her a little to make her laugh. He could understand a lot more why that one story said fairies were born from a kid's laugh. "It's just important that you know them, too." An idea struck him then and he became a little more serious. "You know Molly, but you know Mommy's and Daddy's names too, right?"
The little girl nodded excitedly and said, "My name's Rebecca Clarke Barnes. My Daddy's name is Bucky and Mommy's name is Kara, and we live with Uncle Steve and Aunt Vee and Keith at 302 Quail Ridge Lane."
Bucky looked to Kara, a little surprised by the wealth of information they'd just been given. Rebecca looked between them expectantly. "Did I do it right?" she asked.
***
Other than wondering who Keith was, Kara was pretty impressed by the information they’d just been given and she smiled. “You did wonderful,” she said. “We’re very proud of you. Who else is part of your family besides us and Molly?”
Kara wondered if Alex was still in town and knew her daughter. And J’onn. And Barry. And all of the other people from Bucky’s world that they were friends with. Maybe it was a little unfair for her to ask, but she wanted to know if this was possibly her real future and, if so, if all the people she cared about would be here to share it.
***
Rebecca. They'd named their daughter after his sister and her cousin. They'd taught her what to say if she ever got lost, clearly, and it was far more information than he'd ever expected, but he was grateful for it, too. Steve had mentioned once, when he'd first arrived, that future children had been something the dome had thrown at them before. Bucky hadn't been expecting this to happen to him, though. That it happened with Kara, that they'd somehow made this adorable little girl, made his heart soar.
"Well, there's Molly and Summer and Cassie and Alex, and then Uncle Clark and Aunt Alex and Aunt Diana and Aunt Darcy and Aunt Nat and Uncle Bruce and Aunt Jemma and Uncle Fitz and Uncle Phil and Aunt Pepper and Uncle Clint and Uncle Thor and Aunt Jane and Uncle Barry and Grandpa," she stopped, looking from Kara to Bucky and back. "They're all coming for your birthday, right Daddy?" Especially since she had some awesome Aunts and Uncles, not to mention Grandpa J'onn, whose name she couldn't quite pronounce, so she just stuck to Grandpa.
Bucky just looked sort of stumped at Becca's description of so many people as Aunts and Uncles. He was glad for it, since he liked the idea that they all stuck together and really were a family. He honestly just couldn't believe he trusted so many people to be anywhere near his daughter. There was a very big part of him that didn't even want for Becca and Kara to leave the bedroom so that they could spend as much time as they'd been giving with her.
***
Kara wasn’t entirely sure who Cassie and Alex were, but the rest of the names were ones she recognized and it made her feel good to hear that her daughter had such a large extended family. “Yes, you will get to see everyone this weekend,” she said. “But not for Daddy’s birthday. It’s almost Easter for us. You’ve gone a little bit backwards in time.
She did wonder how old Becca thought her father should be. She wasn’t going to ask though. There was no point in getting her hopes up that this adorable creature would actually be in their future. They knew there was a slight chance that something in the serum would change Bucky’s physiology enough that they could potentially have a child someday, but it likely wasn’t possible which made this a little bittersweet. “But that will be fun too, right? I think there’s going to be an Easter egg hunt.”
***
"Aww," Becca replied, a bit bummed by that. "Birthdays are the best! But I guess Easter's okay, too." She would've much preferred if it was Daddy's birthday - or someone else's birthday! - because that meant candles and presents and getting a tiara because she was a princess on her birthday! "Do we get to do the egg hide and seek?" she asked, thinking of the scavenger hunt that meant she got a big chocolate bunny if she found the most eggs.
Bucky just grinned, glad that she wasn't too put out by the fact that they'd be celebrating Easter. They didn't have any clothes for her, or probably anything that she was used to having in the house, but he was more than willing to buy her whatever she wanted. He could already tell he was going to make sure his daughter knew how loved she was. He did the same thing already with Kara.
"I think we could probably make that happen if it isn't already," he replied, fondly ruffling her hair. The little girl swatted at his hand half heartedly.
"Come onnnn. Waffles!!"
***
They definitely had their hands full with this one. She was a bundle of energy first thing in the morning. “Yeah, come on, waffles,” Kara said, nudging Bucky’s shoulder. “Becca and I are practically wasting away from hunger.”
Her words made Becca laugh and that was just about one of the best sounds she ever heard in her life.
“Look, Daddy, I can’t even move,” she said, dramatically flopping over on the bed.
***
Bucky laughed, an honest to god laugh that he hadn't managed in a long time. It had gotten better though, as time had gone on in Madison Valley, but Becca and Kara had pulled it out of him so easily. He got up out of bed as he said, "Well, I can't have that." He was all smiles though and leaned down to kiss Kara briefly and then dropped a kiss on Becca's head. Only, he also tickled his daughter's sides and she squealed loudly, laughing and wiggling to get out of his reach.
"Daddy!!!! Stop!!" she yelled between giggles and laughs, but of course he stopped immediately.
Bucky just grinned. "Looks like you're not quite wasting away from hunger," he teased.
"Yes I am!" Becca replied, pouting. Bucky just ruffled her hair because she was so cute.
"Okay, okay. I can't say no to you two, can I?"
***
“No, you can’t,” Kara said, grinning up at him. “We’re too cute.”
It was pretty obvious that Bucky was going to be the indulgent parent who let their daughter get away with everything. That didn’t really surprise her though, given the way he spoiled her. “But we’ll keep you company while you cook, if you want,” she offered.
***
"The cutest!!" Becca agreed, before snuggling in closer to her mom. Bucky didn't want to let them out of his sight, on the off chance they might disappear.
"The cutest," he repeated, before he finally pulled away from Kara and Becca. "Why don't you two get dressed and I'll get breakfast going. Uncle Steve and Aunt V will be up soon if they aren't already," he added. Bucky wanted to give Steve the heads up and part of him wanted to make sure either he or Kara was with their daughter at all times.
***
Kara nodded. They probably didn’t have much, if anything, that would fit Becca, but she could improvise with a t-shirt and a belt or something. “We’ll be down in a few minutes,” she said, leaning up to kiss him before he left. If she decided to spend a few minutes cuddling with their daughter, well, she figured he would understand.
