Ah, it felt good to stretch her legs.
Malia had been at her store all morning, restless and fidgety. Of course she was, the moon was tomorrow and she was always restless and fidgety when it was close. Thankfully, with the return of her memories, she could control herself - but she still couldn't control the restlessness.
As soon as two o'clock came, she shut her doors and locked up, making sure that the freezers were all closed and that everything was secure. Then she headed for the woods, shed all of her clothes, and shifted. As soon as she had - it only took a few seconds - she took off at a run, as fast as her little coyote legs would carry her. And it felt amazing. There was no way to explain how wonderful it felt, how free she felt. Her coyote body was strong and agile, she could smell the squirrels and the rabbits and even the people in the houses nearby. She could hear the wind in the trees and the animals scurrying out of her way; and it seemed that the birdsong had an extra dimension when she was in coyote form.
She wasn't sure how long she ran, but finally she slowed to a trot, her tongue lolling out to catch her breath. She felt great. And it had been a long time since she had felt great. It had been a hard winter for her, but she knew now that she was going to be okay. That she was strong and smart and perfectly capable of making it on her own. After all, she'd done it for eight years.
Trotting to a creek, she bent down and lapped up some water, loving the fresh flavor of it. She was mid drink when she heard footsteps nearby, and her head jerked up, looking nervously for whoever was intruding on her wonderful afternoon.
