James knew that the visiting ghosts were difficult for most of the people who were able to see them. Granger was terrified of Bellatrix, others from their world were seeing parents or loved ones, but not James. James had been visited by Peeves the Poltergeist.
Or at least he thought he was the one being visited. It wasn’t as though the Hogwarts ghost explained himself, or belonged to James in any way, or even that James was the only one able to see him. But Peeves was his mate. The Marauders had always gotten on with their fellow prankster. More than a few times, Peeves had caused a distraction so that the boys could slip away from the scene of a crime unseen and unscathed, would cheerfully take the blame, or the credit for their pranks, and if it hadn’t been for his help, they never would have finished their greatest accomplishment. Their mapmaking had relied heavily on Peeves causing trouble far away from where they were working.
For a day or two, it had been nice to see him again. James had gotten to show off his son, the reaction was less than favourable and unsurprisingly the ghost had been more interested in his conception than Harry himself, and make a bit of noise about their home, mostly to the baby’s delight. A few more days in, and James was fed up. A bored poltergeist wasn’t easy to handle.
A restless and mischievous Peeves was what had dragged him out of bed in the middle of the night, running down the streets after the ghost as he slipped through walls, presumably causing a bit of ruckus on the other side of them. Where James could see, he set things right with a wave of his wand, where he couldn’t, he left and hoped for the best. He needed more help than just himself, not that he would admit to it.
Losing sight of the ghost, James stood in the centre of the road and turned in a circle, shouting. “Peeves! Peeves, you dunderhead! Show yourself!”
