The world slowed down--all the chaos of the battle seemed to warp into some bizarre mix of time--so that everything was visible but moving in slow motion and yet as Sirius fell backward and his eyes swept the length of the Death Chamber nothing made any sense. Nothing mattered beyond the simple fact that Bellatrix's spell hit him straight in the chest and forced him into the veil. Around him, the veil shimmered and shivered and opened itself wide to swallow him up, welcoming him with opening, beckoning arms that was too impossible to resist. Sirius let go and gave himself to the promise of oblivion. But as a buzzing noise filled his ears and Sirius's thoughts went fuzzy he slipped into darkness and fell backward onto a paved street, banging his head and his elbow hard as he collapsed into a heap.
His wand flew out of his hand and clattered away, rolling to a stop a few feet from his outstretched fingers, while his robes fluttered about him, settling over his body and tangling around his legs. The wind rushed out of his lungs and it took a moment to find the space to breathe again. Was this heaven? He'd died, right? Sirius screwed his eyes shut for the space of several heartbeats then slowly opened them to look around. Fuck it. He gasped in a lungful of air and pushed himself unsteadily to his feet, fighting briefly with his robes to untangle himself before snatching up his wand. If he was dead, why the fuck had that hurt so much? Rubbing at his scraped elbow Sirius turned around, lofting his wand just in case. What was the use of his wand if he was dead, though? Unfathomable gray eyes passed over his surroundings.
"Bloody fuck," he uttered and stepped forward tentatively, straining to see the buildings beyond his line of sight before he was distracted by the previously ignored presence of a another person.
"I can't say I didn't deserve to go to hell," he said casually, suspicious eyes not leaving the other person. "But I'd kind of hoped.."
