Who: Stefan and Caroline
When: Forward dated, Tuesday
What: Realizations
Where: Downtown????
Warnings: Nope
Stefan had been in a different world all week when it came to Caroline. No longer was he the guy that sat around his apartment, wishing and hoping for things to change, go back to normal to get Elena back and away from his brother. Elena had been the furthest thing from his mind the entire week despite the guilt ridden looks he saw on Caroline's face when she thought he wasn't looking. They didn't talk about it. Not one bit. Instead they spent as much time as they could together and talking wasn't exactly on their list of things to do for all days she was with him. Most times they never made it out of bed, or off the couch and he wondered how long could this really last? It had been so long since he just felt so alive and happy, without threats, with a girl that he couldn't wait to see and ... he felt it. It was like he did a one eighty and he pretty much owed it to Caroline. She brought that out of him.
The night she had come over and they talked, they knew what the consequences were, they knew what the worries were. There was that feeling of what happened to them if this didn't last? What would Elena say? What if Tyler showed up and what if Bonnie was wrong? But they went through with it anyway, a talk that turned into something much more, pretty much bonding them indefinitely. He saw sides of Caroline that he'd never seen before and he wanted more. He wanted to see it all. She was gorgeous, funny, smart and he knew she had responsibilities. She had her friends. She had Elena. Elena who they weren't telling, in fact, they weren't saying a word to anyone about this. It was theirs and honestly, Stefan didn't want to share anything until he and Caroline figured out what it was. Was it just a good time? Was it real? Was this just another layer on their friendship.
No, that wasn't good enough and frankly, they deserved so much more than that.
He walked beside her through what he considered to be downtown. Not holding hands, his arm wasn't around her, they just walked. Talking about anything else but them, anything else but what they were doing and as Stefan stared ahead, watching the people as they passed, he just listened to her voice talk about the holidays coming up and he just turned his head and looked at her. His finger wrapped around hers when she put her hand down at her side, something he hadn't done while they were out together during the week of non talking. His fingers then latched onto hers, holding onto her hand, in public, where they could possibly be seen by anyone they knew. Her voice was quiet and he took a leap, licking his lips and looking at her.
"You need to tell Elena."
The words were simple, the words would probably trigger her guilt because she didn't know how to tell Elena, he knew that already, but by telling her that she needed to tell Elena meant that they needed to talk about what they were, what they were doing and what they wanted. It had only been a week, but Stefan knew he wanted to be with Caroline. Sure, he loved Elena. Part of him still did, just like he wasn't stupid to not believe that she didn't love Tyler, because she did, but this was them. Now. Tyler wasn't here and Elena was with his brother. And after the week they had, they were really a non issue. He knew Elena was happy, but he wasn't going to compromise what he could have with Caroline because Elena would somehow have a problem with it. He wasn't living for Elena and her feelings anymore, he was living his own life and right now, he wanted to open his life up for Caroline.
They both stopped walking and he looked between them at their hands before bringing himself to look at her. Yeah, he was the one that told her not to say anything in the first place, but that was him being selfish, wanting to enjoy her before everyone decided to pick it apart when they had no idea what this was.
But now, it was all different. Everything changed.
"We pushed this off, well, for a week," he smiled and touched her face. He was sure they both knew why they pushed it off. They didn't want to talk about it, but now it was kind of late for that. They had to talk it out, figure out what it was and go from there. There was no other way around it at this point.
