WHO: Clove and OPEN
WHAT: First day of school
WHEN: Monday lunchtime
WHERE: The local school
WARNINGS: TBD
Clove wasn't entirely comfortable with this school. That was to be expected, she told herself. That was what happened when you were dropped into the distant past by someone who felt like saving your life for some unknown reason. Feeling uncomfortable in the situation she was in was normal. She took note of the feeling, regarded it as an observer might. It existed, but it didn't bother her. She could detach herself. She was good at that.
She'd been doing a lot of it. This school wasn't anything like the academies in District 2. For one thing, there was more of a focus on academics. By the time Clove had moved into the upper tier at home, she'd been spending most of her time training for the Games. Everything else had been, to her mind, superfluous. The classes here were difficult. Perhaps not impossibly so, and she'd signed up for those she at least had a shot at doing well in, but it was still just one more problem to take note of.
As expected, almost everyone else considered her strange and made no attempt at hiding the fact. The only notable exception was the woman who had led that morning's athletics session – physical education, according to Clove's schedule – who had practically jumped on her in asking her to try out for sports teams. The fact that Clove didn't know how to play the sports was seemingly irrelevant, and that made her highly suspicious of the idea. There had to be a catch. She'd find out what it was before she agreed to join in with anything unfamiliar. Knowing what you were signing up for was always a bonus.
After all this, Clove found herself standing in the lunch hall, watching kids queuing, sitting together in small groups, or passing through on their way to some other place. They all knew where they were going. They all knew what they were doing. She didn't. It was all noise and confusion. She'd ask Ciel about it when she saw him next, but for now it looked as if she was on her own. Still uncomfortable. Still not too worried about the fact. If the worst the other kids tried was ignoring her, she was doing pretty well.
