Who: Random and OPEN
What: Throwing rocks, missing home, holograms
When: Now
Where: By the barrier, on the edge of town
Warnings: Possible discussion of panic attacks
Rocks bounced. They didn't bounce quite as vigorously as they should have. Did that mean that the barrier was absorbing some of the impact? Maybe it was cushioned. Random Dent contemplated running into at at full-tilt for about seven microseconds before deciding that it was a fundamentally stupid idea. She liked Doctor Black, she didn't want to have to consult him on treating injuries sustained from doing ridiculous things like running into invisible barriers unless it was absolutely necessary.
Instead, she threw another rock. She'd watched all her holovids at least twice, and had tried out enough unexpected food combinations (strawberry pizza) that she wasn't at all hungry. This place was boring. Utterly, inescapably boring. Not to mention that she was the most scientifically advanced person here, which was a complete joke. She'd tweaked some of the Masons' computers, that was about it. So much for those ideas everyone had about visiting backwards worlds and making huge scientific leaps and doing in months what took most civilizations centuries.
The sociologists didn't like that sort of thing, anyway. It was almost as bad as messing with local religion, not that she hadn't done enough of that. She couldn't do it here, she'd checked. Christianity was far too codified for her to start making alterations to. Random had never expected that she'd miss either of her parents or anything about Lamuella, but it was looking more and more likely by the day.
Likely. Not certain. She was still holding out. Maybe her spaceship (that guy's spaceship) would spontaneously materialize in front of her and she'd be able to consult the Guide and fifth-dimensional shift out of here. It wasn't impossible, was it? But then neither was the spontaneous materialization of an Arcturan Megagrasshopper, a bottle of Fanallan rum, or a cabaret singer from Milliways. It was all just very improbable.
If there was a spaceship here to steal, she'd steal it. There wasn't. She could steal other things but that'd only be for the sake of it and besides, stealing from your homeworld was always a bit of a bad idea. This wasn't Random's homeworld. There was another set of problems. But it was as close as she was ever going to get and besides there were a few humans here who were halfway interesting and she didn't want to annoy them.
She sat on the ground, staring at the barrier. 'What?' she said aloud, confrontationally, as if it were sentient. In case it were sentient. 'We want to leave, okay? I have to check out Islington and then get off this planet, so...go bother someone else.'
Predictably, there was no response. Random sighed, and tapped the Flex-O-Panel screen implanted into her forearm a few times. A holographic display sprung up, two saucer-shaped spaceships chasing each other across a starry sky, with bright flashes of light and zappy sounds as they fired laser beams at one another. She'd seen this one three times, but it had good crashes, and if she angled her arm just right she could project it so that it almost looked as if the little ships were outside the barrier. Almost.
