Why, why would someone draw this!?! Or this?! Why? Why even if they think we are from a book, why would they think this art? This is murder. This is evil! And so are they who draw it.

I've not the stomach for this world, if that is what passes for entertainment here.

I don't know what to say of the folk in this world, that they would draw such. It's proper terrible. Monstrous, aye, you're right to say it.

They don't...have her likeness exact, do they? I know that doesn't help a bit.

Of course not. You remember what she looked like, Cuthbert. Like life, like summer, like everything good. None of the pictures capture her, but they are near enough that it is certain who it is.

I remember. The pictures are only pale imitation. Even then - did you find a proper portrait, at least, that you might look at in place of that chary so-called artistry?

She is! There's a picture that has something of the vitality of her, the goodness. Her beauty. When one of us is next at the library we can give it to one of the copy-machines and then you'll have that to keep.

Then I'll stay. If you need me back and I'm away, you tell me, Roland. I've got Valen at my side and you've only that apartment and I know well how that is, I had enough of it before you came.

The copy-machines? The operation of them is simple and logical enough. I'll show you. I can even get the paper out when it's trapped inside and sets off a terrible bleeping and there are folk born to this world who can't manage that. Mayhap I could pass for one of them! Imagine that! I can do the accent right proper, did I show you that?

If you're feeling well again, aye. The air will do you good, even if there's a fair chill in the air now. Or mayhap it only seems that way as I'm staying outside. But I'll laugh again, sometime. I could hardly afflict you with a wholly-serious Cuthbert, could I? That wouldn't do.

Besides, people are fascinated by sex and violence. Don't you have any stories back home about heroes and fighting and things like that? That's what these people are thinking.

It's not romantic, it's morbid. I'm just saying it's a fairly natural human impulse. To them, her death isn't any different than a woman's death in a story is for you.

That's what women do in stories: We die and then you guys get upset about it.

It's one of the reasons why I have little tolerance for fiction, but it's common enough, so they don't see it any differently. To them, you're not real, so you can't be hurt by it.

Those people don't know that.

There's nothing wrong with being upset, but you can't expect the world to equally share your grief. Your friends, sure. But strangers? If you let yourself get upset by it, you'll never stop.

You don't grieve other deaths equally to hers, so it goes the other way around too. That's all.

Be upset, but don't judge others for not taking on the burden of your grief.
