Tom Lehrer Called His Piano...
Who: Charly Burke and Daphne Bridgerton
What: Random Encounter (Match-Up)
When: Wednesday afternoon
Where: Hanover College
Warnings: I Think Not
Status: Incomplete

Charly didn't often get over to the music school at Hanover College. The sciences buildings weren't that far from the Lynne Center, but her schedule kept her busy. The intro to math and intro to engineering classes were large, so lectures and grading exams took a lot of time. The upper level classes were smaller, but she enjoyed them more, and the smaller number of students nonetheless got more personal attention.

Still, she enjoyed music. She liked to sing, and though she didn't play an instrument herself, she liked to listen to students practicing for performances. So she was wandering through the Fine Arts Center among the practice rooms when she heard someone playing piano. Charly didn't recognize the piece, but it sounded like something classical. Whoever it was played well, and had clearly been playing for years.

Charly stopped by the open door to listen until she--the student was a young woman--reached the end of the piece. Charly applauded softly, not wanting to startle her. "That was lovely," she said. "You play very well. I don't recognize that piece, though. What was it?"

Daphne had spent some time at the Hanover College in the music department. She wanted to prepare a song for the upcoming festival and something that would be original. She had written out a poem and now she was putting the words to the music. But, she needed to warm up.

As she had gathered her bag and went to the piano, she closed her eyes and allowed her fingers to do the talking. Daphne just played and played. Her fingers were moving across the keys. She played her favorite musical piece, it was dark, it was lovely and beautiful all at the same time.

Then she was startled by clapping. Looking back she saw a young woman standing there. "I was not made aware I had an audience." She said as she grabbed her notebook. "Thank you. It was Beethoven. Midnight Sonata. It's very beautiful and dark. I was just warming up."

"Beethoven," Charly said. "I should have recognized it." It was indeed beautiful and dark.

"I didn't mean to interrupt you," Charly said. "I was passing by and heard you playing. I stopped to listen and felt the need to applaud. I appreciate skilled musicians wherever I find them."

"I'm Charly Burke," she added, realizing she should introduce herself. "I teach mathematics and engineering here."

"It's alright. Quite a few people don't recognize or they mistake one for the other." She said as she looked at her.

"You are perfectly fine. You didn't interrupt me at all. I was just playing for fun. I am starting to put music to a poem I wrote to turn into a song for the music and arts festival." She said as she took her notebook out and put it on the piano. "And thank you. I have been playing since I was a little girl. Back in the 1800's there really wasn't a whole lot that you could do that most people do now." She said with a giggle.

"It's nice to meet you Charly. I'm Daphne. Daphne Bridgerton." She said as she bowed her head a little bit to show respect. "Mathematics and engineering huh? Sounds complicated."

"I'm glad to hear that I didn't interrupt," Charly said. "You're setting words to music? I'll be interested to hear the result at the festival."

"The 1800s? You're a long way from home--or a long time from home, I suppose I should say," Charly said. She knew there were other time-displaced people here, but few from so far in past or future. "So am I. It was 2422 when I found myself here in Madison. It's been quite an adjustment for me, and I expect for you as well."

"It's nice to meet you, too, Daphne. I suppose it is complicated. It certainly is according to some of my students, though I think if they studied more, it wouldn't seem all that difficult."

"Yeah. I have heard that turning your thoughts and putting it into a song is how great music is created. So I thought I would give it a try." She said with a shrug of her shoulders. "I am hoping to be done with it by the time the festival comes about."

"Yeah, let me just tell you I got a slap in the face with reality pretty hard." She said laughing. "Oh wow, so you are from the way way way future. That...that just absolutely blows my mind how I'm...well, that you we would never ever meet in any other circumstances than here."

"Music is my thing. And writing, women weren't allowed to study those things back home."

"It's a good start, certainly," Charly agreed. "If you don't start with what's real, it's probably going to be lacking that spark you need for greatness. I look forward to hearing the completed piece."

"I'm sure you did," Charly said. She'd certainly been shocked to find herself trapped in the distant past. Some of the things they took for granted here and now still shocked her. She wasn't sure if it would be worse to be thrust into the future. History at least gave her some idea of what to expect. "I don't think I'd have ever met anyone here if I hadn't come here. Alternate timelines and different realities are at least as formidable as living in different eras."

"I'm sorry you had to deal with that. Things are better here, though. And better still in my time. I miss it sometimes, but--" I'd be dead if I weren't here. Charly shrugged. "You play the hand you're dealt."

"Thank you. I am going to be so nervous playing an original song, I mean I wouldn't know what to do if people didn't like it." She confessed to her.

"I find it fascinating. That there are people from different times. It has a sense of what I would be missing when I would be deceased. I have to admit that I am really enjoying being here in this timeline. I am still learning but I am learning quite a bit." She said with a nervous giggle. "So what is your future like?" She asked.

"Yeah well, back then the men were the ones that had to provide for the families while the women bared and took care of the children. It was just our roles." She said with a shrug of her shoulders.

"I'm sure you'll do well," Charly said. "I look forward to hearing it."

"What's it like?" Charly asked. She thought about it and smiled. "Humans live on many other planets now, and live and work with aliens. We've mostly ended poverty and disease, and technology has made everyone wealthy by modern standards. We don't kill animals for meat--we can produce it without resorting to that, and that's one of the things I miss most."

"It's not a utopia, though. There are still problems and threats--I was in the Navy, and we fought our share of battles with hostile powers. I guess you could say we've traded up to different problems."

"I'm sorry you had to deal with those sorts of rules, but I'm glad you're here and have more freedom now. And speaking of freedom, I should probably let you get back to what you were doing."

Daphne sat and listened to her tell tales of her world. She found it very fascinating. Aliens? Other planets? It seemed like something that came from a book or a story that one of her family members would create for the young ones.

"Well, it sounds like something right out of a story that perhaps one of my family members would read. It really does seem like an interesting place." She said, commenting about her world.

"Yeah, I guess you are right. I should get back to this. It was very nice to meet you. And I'm sure we will run into each other again soon." She went back to her writing and the piano.
