The John Murphy of seven years ago wouldn't have been caught dead in a bookstore, and if you'd told him why he'd be in one now? He would have laughed in your face. It was amazing how time could change things, and it was bittersweet. He'd lost so much over the years, so many people, and while he was very happy with the life he now had? He was always going to feel the losses.
He had his kids, though, and the fact that he did? Made him realize just how lucky he was, simply as a general thing. Being here was the opposite of being home in so many ways, and he would never be a functional adult back there. (Of course, it was also up for debate as to how much of a functional adult he was in Madison Valley.)
He'd had to stop at the bookstore to pick up the books he'd had ordered for Aurie -- never mind that his little wild child was and always would be a nature baby, he was trying to give her the basis for an interest in something else if she ever wanted it. He hadn't managed to screw her up irreparably so far, which meant he was pretty sure he was doing okay.
And because he didn't have the kids with him, he took a little time to wander around for himself. He wasn't even necessarily that interested in reading, but he'd long since learned to take the opportunities for time to himself as they came. He turned the corner past a set of shelves only to see someone he vaguely recognized.
"Dude, your dog spent six hours napping in the Lawn & Garden section at Walmart yesterday. Why?"
