So, since I've seen so many icon battles, I wanted to do one myself and convinced [info]dani_meows that it would be fun (which it was!) and we both picked 10 images each :)
If you want, you can also check out the original images, which are linked above the icons (those starting with "I" being chosen by me and with "D" being chose by [info]dani_meows

If you want to comment on [info]dani_meows' post, you can do so here @ [info]bipolardanicats

Also, please remember to credit the correct person!

And now on to the icons...

It was a lot of fun! I hope we do another one soon, perhaps we could try to do one every month... now that we have a format/table down. Also I may have started adding sections to my galleries with ten images in each section. Wee mania!

As I already told you love your pretties but now I can be detailed:

Love your classic who icons! I couldn't get the second image of Sarah Jane to cooperate on my screen, so I'm in awe of what you got with that one! Snagged the first and sixth doctor icons. Love the crop you chose for both!

Love what you did with the Jack icon! Love that cap of 10/Master as it always leads to pretty icons. Love the crop and color you chose for your river icon and love what you did for 11 and Amy.

Love what you did for Rose in motion! Love what you did for nine! Love what you did for Jack, a lot! Love the Rose icon and love Amy and 11.

Love the Sherlock icons, I'm in awe of how you always get Sherlock to look so pretty, when I keep having he get to pale! Love the John icons.

For the Alternates, I snagged Rose, Rose with omg face, Sherlock and John.

:-D From all of them, I snagged a lot!

That sounds like a great idea! Since I noticed that you picked Avengers image, do you want that to be next? If that's the case I'll pick some images of my own :D

I had trouble getting it to cooperate with Photoshop! Photoshop screwed up the ratio and wouldn't let me fix it. So I just took a screenshot of my screen and worked with that copy. I really wish I had chosen a different image for that one.

Thanks :)
I'm especially proud of that River icon.

As for Sherlock... I the "brightest" spot to white and the "darkest" to black using those pipettes. After that I add a colour fill layer with an orange-ish colour (picked new every time) set to soft light (depending on how much it needs with an opacity as low as 10-30% or a bit more...). I really have to watch those faces though as it can quickly become too yellow, orange or red (which is why there are two John & Rose icons... I just wasn't sure how much of that colour was good :D)

Enjoy! :D

:-D sounds good! :-D

There will probably be a lot of batches of ten images for future battles going up in the next few days... since focusing on one thing and I are having issues.

I wish I'd thought of that for the Sarah Jane image, instead she became an experiment in blur and texture.

:-D I'll have to try that! I always forget about that trick and often forget about color fill layers...

I always have a problem with those two becoming way to warm and not wanting to get their skin back to a normal range.

:-D

Just let me know which one... or tell me all of them and we can then just choose which one we want to do next and everybody already has the images :D

I was just about to start thinking of telling you I wanted to choose a different one when I remembered that button!

Since I'm just making the icons for the next dailyicons prompts... I also sometimes use the hue/saturation layer (?) to increase the saturation of the colours. It doesn't always work (not enough noticeable increase or going too far too quickly), but it's a good way to get at the natural colouring.
A part of me hates these steps, because they're practically on every icon I use and sometimes I feel I limit myself with it and want to try something new... on the other hand - most of the time I'm really happy with the results.

If that happens I sometimes use a layer that turns everything to black&white and set the opacity to 10% (with the potential to play with it) and then use the layer mask to apply it only to the face... that way I can reduce some colour from the face again without taking it from the background. Then again, this risk the face going too pale again.

:-D we'll do Avengers this month!

:-D

My method that I use for almost every icon is:
1.) Drag screenshot unto 300*300 canvas and drag until I get the crop/angle/position I want.
2.)Smudge if necessary
3.) Auto Curves
4.) Vibrance- 100
5.) Vibrance- 100 set to a different blend modes (in the last thee icons for the set I'm about to post I tried it on hard light and screen and got some neat efffects)
6.) Apply textures set to soft or hard light
7.) Figure out where I'm going with the coloring.
8.) Curse at random things and settings until I either get what I want or I say good enough
9.) Resize, sharpen, and add textures, text.. :-P

Mine (in numbers) is the following:
1) crop (angling the crop field if I so want)
1a) if the cropping went over the image: smudging and various other measures to get the newly created part of the image to fit
2) resize
3) put in new canvas (100x100)
4) curves
5) paint black and white areas, blur and set to soft light
6) colour flood fill
7) merge on new layer + sharpen (using a smart filter when I remember)
8) add text

at various stages between 3 and 6)
a) merge all on a new layer and set to negative light
b) merge all on a new layer and set to soft light (especially in combination with b)
c) try textures
d) pick random colours, paint all over the icon, blur and set to soft light
e) create a border (mostly with mask brushes)
f) add a gradient map (black to white) either to make it a b&w icon or set to soft light to affect contrast

... and I keep distracting myself with things (like showering, making dinner, eating dinner - oh shit! it's already 9pm... well by now it's 11pm, but I uploaded icons and thought about replying to your comments :D

:-D yay distraction! I'm distracting myself from my last math problems.

Negative light? Is that exclusion?

I do love to copy merge and through filters effects on the whole image on different blend modes, and lately I've been on a paint colors mode!

:D

Actually, it's a mix from screen and soft light... directly translated the screen says something like "negative multiply) and I completely forgot to check that like the other blend modes :D
For what do I know this great glossary? It's probably been too long since my last tutorial.

copy merge is brilliant for applying filters (and the other methods I've come to love) :)
