deja vu (the doctor, cavan, sympathy)
Dean drove out of the development where the house was and out onto the main stretch of... wherever this town was. He was looking for major landmarks, and anything familiar at all--including people he knew, just walking around.

Still, they didn't get far into the drive before Dean's stomach was gurgling. He didn't really want to put off the search, but food? With him? It couldn't wait.

Dean pulled into the lot of the Friendly's as it came up on his right. At least that was something sort of familiar. He parked the car, and with a sigh, turned to explain all of what was going to happen in there to Sympathy.

"Alright. I'm really hungry, and that's... gonna get in the way of trying to do what we wanna do. So we're gonna go in there and get some food and then go back to looking around."

He looked at her, eyes searching hers. This was going to be a lot for her. "It might be loud in there, but it's just a place that serves food, and we'll go as quick as we can."

Dean gave her a quick nod, got out of the car, closed the driver's side door, and waited for her right at the door of the restaurant. Part of him wanted to walk around the back and see if there was a big blue box there.

The Doctor did not actually agree, per se, but he didn't say anything. He quite liked curiosity. And he did not expect people to be anything they were not.

"TARDIS stands for time and relative dimension in space. It's not just a spaceship. Although now, she's little more than a glorified car or airplane. The parts that allow her to travel through time and dimensions are no longer present. But it's not that they're not working. They just are not there. At all."

Dean could not imagine Sympathy fat. Even so, he chuckled at what she'd said.

And ignored Cavan.

"So... somebody ripped out the flux capacitor. Exactly how much would someone have to know to make that happen and make sure not to make the TARDIS totally useless? How smart would you have to be?"

Because Dean would bet you had to be goddamn smart. He knew a lot about cars, and there were still some that he knew better than to open up and try to fix. Things like that were delicate, always. And the Doctor was an alien. Advanced technology, things like that.

He'd bet there was a very small number of things in the universe that could do what the Doctor was talking about. A very, very small number.

Sympathy thought about the things that the Doctor was saying while she chewed. She was not an ignorant woman. She'd been sent off to one of the best schools, even though it had been because her father was disappointed she was not a boy. She had learned much.

Eyebrows knitting together, trying to understand, she swallowed her bite.

"Time and ... space. This means you do not just move in it like a ship on the water? You can go to any moment in time to see it for yourself?"

There were other things he was saying that she was trying to understand, but she was having to get used to certain new ideas and wasn't quite caught up yet.

He turned his head to Sympathy and nodded. "Yeah, I can. Well, I could. It's sort of what I do. I've seen the beginning of this planet and the end of it. But I can't travel through time with the TARDIS as she is."

He considered Dean's question. He knew what he was getting at.

"There are many types of people I can think of that would want to do this to me. The Time War wasn't exactly kind, and sometimes I'm not so popular. But the number of planets with the right kind of technology is considerably smaller. I don't know that what happened to the TARDIS is related to all of us being here, but I have to think it is. I don't imagine that there was any being in York capable of changing her like that, and the TARDIS was just fine up until just before Electric City."

He'd destroyed worlds. And he'd intentionally not saved people, because sometimes, he could not. It was possible for someone to want to do this simply for revenge, but that was unlikely. The Doctor was more observant than all of that, to not notice if suddenly a revenge-bent old foe was lurking around.

Of course it was more complicated. Dean just didn't know how else to put it.

He was listening intently to what the Doctor said. Dean was fairly good at figuring out a list of potential suspects given information to draw from. His father had made sure of that.

"Okay. So out of those... things..."

The word 'people' just didn't seem right.

"... how many could do this?" He gestured with his hand to the restaurant. "The.. .the houses with the weird decor. The restaurant that looks just like home except for that acid trip mural over there?"

He leaned back a little bit in the booth.

"And what makes them tick?"

The pirate nodded. Her mind turned to the other new things that she was finding out. The way that the world worked.

"One more question, yes? Is it like somebody stole these things that are missing? Or does it appear that they were never there when you are sure that they were?" This part was really confusing her. "You just know that they are gone because you have seen them there before?"

Sympathy had no idea how something could work one way one day and then not the same the next, and appear as if it never had at all.

She did understand the concept of breaking things. That was nothing new. But how was something just... different... like that?

The Doctor considered all of the questions.

How many could do this?

"Not very many," he said. "If you want an exact number, I'd say maybe there are three or four alien races capable. One of those is colorblind, though, so we'd have some red trees instead of green. Things like that."

And Sympathy's question... well, that was a bit more difficult to explain.

"The TARDIS is a living thing. She can die. We don't build our ships, we grow them. So think of it this way: You know what's inside a human body. What organs go wear, little bit about what they do. Lots of pictures of that stuff, lots of books. I know what goes where, and I've seen it there before. What's happened here is much the same as a human being losing their liver or kidney. You don't need that to live, not absolutely. Your body will find ways around it. It'll use your other kidney, your liver can regenerate its lobes long as you've got a bit of it left. But it's much better to HAVE the parts you're meant to have."

He sighed.

"But as for what it looks like... the wiring and the panels... everything's like none of it was every there. Like your body never had two kidneys. Or a liver. Things are moved over inside of her, shifted around and re-routed."

He nodded at Cavan. "This shit is fucked indeed."

Dean really had to agree.

That sounded very complex. It sounded like something Heaven'd do. And that? That was bad. Because by and large, angels were dicks. He remembered when they'd tried to make him cave, tried to make him say he'd be Michael's vessel.

A finger snap, and Sam's lungs were gone.

Another, and Dean had stage four stomach cancer.

"I really am gonna regret this, but are we totally sure it's aliens? I mean, I get that they seem like the most likely thing. And everything you're saying is reinforcing that. But the messing with your ship... that sounds like angels to me. Can we rule that out?"

He looked around the table.

"Trust me on this. Angels aren't always the good guys. And they've got more than enough juice to pull off all of this."
